Although the window is small and it has limited number of tables inside, it has amazing sweets (basically pastries). We have tried out different ones in our multiple visits in the pastry shop. They offer the sweets also 'to go' in a nice package (maybe a way around the limited space inside the shop).

This bakery has been a North Beach standby for many years. They have a selection of italian pastries & coffee but Sacripantina cake is still the 'stella' (star) of the show! Seemingly light as the clouds in an Italian painting- it is sweetly redolent of Marsala -filled & frosted with a zabaglione/chantilly heavenly mixture..there are toasted almonds somewhere on top... We saw this place and it looks nice. They have a wide variety of pastries and small "cookies". We hade both and coffee to that. The pastries were nice but not delicious and the coffee was really bad. If you walk by its ok but not worth looking for.

This little bakery is right down the street from Tony's. I had the sacripantina (sp?) which was light and delicious. We also tried the chocolate truffle cake and the cannoli which were both very good, as well. Nice treat! Hard to choose with so many options. May have to go back!

Stopped on the way to Golden Boy Pizza for pastries for my son's birthday. I don't remember what we bought was called, but it was absolutely delicious. The cake was extremely light and the chocolate rich and decadent.

Walking through north beach and went with the Sacripantina cake as the description said it was one of there best and indeed it was so delicious! Light, yet rich, pleasingly sweet, yet not too sugary, this cake strikes and incredible balance of texture and flavor. I regret not having been to this bakery earlier so I could have discovered this... More

Every good Italian neighborhood has one - and this is North Beach's. Unpretentious local pastry shop has limited seating but tables open up quickly. Wide range of pastry selections. We had some cookies, a napoleon and custard eclair with cappuccinos - about $20 and was delicious.

I've been visiting Stella's since I was a kid- it's an absolute must do every time I visit SF. A cappuccino and a rum cream filled cream puff, topped with powdered sugar and drizzled with caramelized sugar ... My mouth is watering just writing the review!!!

Bought a napoleon to go then decided we should eat it there...which led to ordering yet another pastry. Really good ! I don't always eat desserts but this was worth making an exception!

Stella Pastry sells all kinds of pastries and cakes that are super delicious and so heavenly to eat---my favs are chocolate fedora, tiramisu, chocolate fondant, eclairs, Sacripantina and any of their mouth watering cookies. This is a classic Italian bakery with a neighborhood vibe. They also open late so you can have a late snack with a cappuccino after a... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
