We stopped in here after dinner to have dessert. They have so many choices. We two different types of cakes and cannoli and they were all so good. The cake just melt in your mouth. I also liked that what we had was not sugary at all. It is a very small place with limited seating both inside and outside.... More

Whenever I am in San Francisco, I make it a point to have at least one meal in either Chinatown or North Beach (the Italian neighborhood). The food is usually good and both areas are within walking distance to Stella Pastry and Cafe! Their homemade cannolis are absolutely to die for, with flavorful fillings and very crispy shells. If you... More

Well I think everyone in San Francisco must know about Stellas because it was always full of people eating, having coffee, or carrying out cakes. The cakes were great with generous sizes, moderate rices and lots of imagination. We managed a few cakes and on one occasion hot chocolate. It is certainly a place to go for stylish indulgent sweet... More

It was very difficult to decide what to try because everything looked so good. I settled on a Diplomatico Slice. Very light, very creamy, very fresh. My mom got a Chocolate & Raspberry Mousse Slice. Very chocolaty and the raspberry mousse was light and not overpowering. My friend got the eclair with whipped cream. Light pastry and fluffy whipped cream.... More

We miss their two most famous items. You need to go early. But we found delicious cakes and pastries. There was a small line. They have a few tables ( I think the should have more).

Went there this morning for coffee and pastries to start the day. Thought with their early opening it would be a coffee shop/bakery, but this is a pastry place and more of a late night place. As a pastry place, Stella's is excellent but not so much for the morning coffee. Noticed 3 or 4 groups that had obviously seen... More

I never go to SF without a stop at Stella. I get the light flaky long Italian cookies in two flavors: sugar and almond. Let me just say, ½ pound is not enough! Their coffee is also great if you've been wandering around North Beach and need a short rest.

Great place to pop in for a coffee and pastry if you are in the North Beach area. We had the biscotti cookies which were delicious!

Although the window is small and it has limited number of tables inside, it has amazing sweets (basically pastries). We have tried out different ones in our multiple visits in the pastry shop. They offer the sweets also 'to go' in a nice package (maybe a way around the limited space inside the shop).

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
