Went there this morning for coffee and pastries to start the day. Thought with their early opening it would be a coffee shop/bakery, but this is a pastry place and more of a late night place. As a pastry place, Stella's is excellent but not so much for the morning coffee. Noticed 3 or 4 groups that had obviously seen... More

I never go to SF without a stop at Stella. I get the light flaky long Italian cookies in two flavors: sugar and almond. Let me just say, ½ pound is not enough! Their coffee is also great if you've been wandering around North Beach and need a short rest.

Great place to pop in for a coffee and pastry if you are in the North Beach area. We had the biscotti cookies which were delicious!

Although the window is small and it has limited number of tables inside, it has amazing sweets (basically pastries). We have tried out different ones in our multiple visits in the pastry shop. They offer the sweets also 'to go' in a nice package (maybe a way around the limited space inside the shop).

This bakery has been a North Beach standby for many years. They have a selection of italian pastries & coffee but Sacripantina cake is still the 'stella' (star) of the show! Seemingly light as the clouds in an Italian painting- it is sweetly redolent of Marsala -filled & frosted with a zabaglione/chantilly heavenly mixture..there are toasted almonds somewhere on top... We saw this place and it looks nice. They have a wide variety of pastries and small "cookies". We hade both and coffee to that. The pastries were nice but not delicious and the coffee was really bad. If you walk by its ok but not worth looking for.

This little bakery is right down the street from Tony's. I had the sacripantina (sp?) which was light and delicious. We also tried the chocolate truffle cake and the cannoli which were both very good, as well. Nice treat! Hard to choose with so many options. May have to go back!

Stopped on the way to Golden Boy Pizza for pastries for my son's birthday. I don't remember what we bought was called, but it was absolutely delicious. The cake was extremely light and the chocolate rich and decadent.

Walking through north beach and went with the Sacripantina cake as the description said it was one of there best and indeed it was so delicious! Light, yet rich, pleasingly sweet, yet not too sugary, this cake strikes and incredible balance of texture and flavor. I regret not having been to this bakery earlier so I could have discovered this... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
