This is not a place you take a first date or your parents from Nebraska, probably, unless they enjoy the seedier side of a great city. Dark, with old-timers at the bar, beatup tables and lots of contributed "junk" on all surfaces. Probably don't want to order a PINK LADY or a Mango Margarita, as they will tell to get... More

It IS a museum. It is a Cafe - limited offerings, but it makes up in ambiance and history and local interest. This is the best place ever and I hope it never changes. A local place, for local folks and visitors alike.

Given the lack of reviews Specs has on this site, you can tell it's for the locals. The walls are covered in interesting curios and collectibles, the bar is filled with local characters, the place is a perfect oasis from the tourist-filled streets. You won't get any fancy blender drinks or the latest vodka that Hollywood is drinking, but you... More

We were there couple times and we really enjoy the super friendly staff and the atmosphere. You can taste the essence of North America.

Tucked out-of-the-way in a small alley is this unique bar frequented by locals from the North Beach area. Great for a drink and a large wedge of cheese and crackers. Loads of interesting photos and curios and oddities adorn the walls and ceilings. Send them a postcard to add the the huge ollection from around the world.

Good hole in the wall with lots of fun stuff to check out on the wall (walrus penis... nice). Lots of old timers and regulars. A group of old writers and poets always meet at the tables in the back... not very approachable... but a unique scene nonetheless

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
