Cool place in great location. You can actually see the process of making bread from the street, and smell of the fresh baked bread is amazing. And that’s all bells and whistles you will get. Taste is just not there. Taste like overpriced tourist spot.

You know you must REALLY love the food, when you're out of town on vacation and dine at two restaurants of the same chain in a matter of 6 days. Such was the case with us during our trip to San Francisco, when we dined...at this Boudin Bakery located at 2890 Taylor St. (Look for another review of the 2nd Boudin location at Pier 39.) Anyway, this was the only rainy day we had during our trip, we had walked 1-1/2 miles from our hotel (came prepared with umbrella's and ponchos), and we were starved. My wife ordered the Chili bread bowl and I had the Crab bread bowl. They were both awesome. Chili was not too spicy, and the crab bowl had an abundance of crab meat. I wish that I had taken more pics to share with you. This place is HUGE, and yeah, it gets busy. Tip ... I hear the sandwiches are great, as are all the selections of bread available. AND, if you're chilly and a bit wet, they served the best d*** cup of coffee I had during our stay in San Francisco. Here's where I knock one star off an otherwise 5-star rating. If you need a restroom, you have to go outside to a public facility which is located about 100 feet through a parking lot. (pic of me in the mirror included.) Don't I look happy? Come on Boudin, you can do better than this.More

Very unique building where the bread is made. Had a great breakfast there as well as a soup bowl on our 2nd visit. Both are great.

Loved this place. Nearly ate at the smaller boudin cafe on Pier 39. So glad we went to the bigger bakery. Despite only wanting the soup in the sour dough bowls we ate upstairs and had table service. So worth the extra couple of dollars....Great service and wonderful soupMore

The place is right at the heart of tourist attractions in San Francisco- steeped in history with an amazing tour of the facilities, it is a must for food lovers. If there is one item you definitely need to try then it is the soup...served in sourdough bowls. And the variety to buy in the accompanying store is amazing, so do not exhaust your souvenir budget before stepping into Boudin.More

The Hop On, Hop Off guy recommended Boudin for lunch and we went back three more times. Their sourdough bread is the best we have ever tasted. Day one, we had breadbowls, day two, sandwiches and on day three, we ate in the restaurant overlooking...the bay. The service was outstanding and the crab cakes were delicious. My daughter is a vegan and she found several menu items that were very satisfying. I see on other reviews that the service was only average. I beg to differ. Our experiences with take out and dine in were excellent. As an aside, my granddaughter loved the sourdough bear we brought home. Go and enjoy!More

The clam chowder bowl was really good. To be fair, the clam chowder was okay, but the sourdough bread bowl was great. Kids loved the sourdough pizza.

My family and I entered the store around 7:30ish and when we ordered my aunt was the only one offered a “for here or to-go” option, my next aunt wasn’t offered the same option and was instead told she wasn’t allowed to eat in, my...mother and I werent even offered to stay. When we all went to sit with my aunt allowed to sit, not even minutes passed because “Mickel” told us to go sit in the dirty seats outside of the area. We refused and told him he was being rude about disrupting our eating time and even told him he allowed my aunt to sit, he then responded with pointing at her and saying he only allowed her, she then said we were a group and he left. About five minutes passed before he came back and just straight up told us to leave, my aunts then asked to speak with his manager and when he left he went a talked with his buddy before coming back and telling us the manger wasn’t there. Even at ordering we were told they closed at 9. When our food arrived it was mediocre and leuk-warm.More

Average restaurant. Food quality not extravagant. Poor customer service. Great location, great potential to be the place to go but short to expectations

This is on the waterfront so you can get a nice view. We ate here twice. Once was for lunch for a tradition sourdough bread bowl and soup. Then we stopped back a second time and just had drinks and a dessert at the bar....Friendly staff. Great food. Short wait. Their bakery is delicious so we got croissants to go for breakfast the next morning!!More

Interesting building which is a working bakery which runs round the clock so you see the bakery staff making the bread. Pungent smell (if you like sourdough!) Clam chowder is delicious and filling but so much bread wasted as a whole loaf is just too...much carbs! Strange ordering system with rather surly staff if you don't understand the process. Drinks relatively expensive. Worth visiting for the noveltyMore

Excellent little sourdough pizzas in a “don’t miss” icon of San Francisco. Fun vibe inside the downstairs cafe, and very efficient service.

We went a couple of times during our stay and we were drawn in by the smell of the bakery. We had various meals, both in the restaurant and take away. All were great and the bread was amazing. My daughter said it was the...best tomato soup she had ever tried. I preferred the Shrimp and my wife had a veggie pizza, all first class, we will be returning.More

Back in the 1980’s when I worked near Fisherman’s Wharf, you could stop at a much smaller Boudin’s Bakery for a Italian salami and cheese sandwich on sourdough roll (baguette) for $1.75 each. They made trays and trays of these and the locals would lineup...in the early hours before work to get these for their breakfast or lunch or both. The sourdough was so chewy and the crust thick and crunchy that by the time you finished your sandwich your jaw was tired. Well, those days are gone, Boudin’s is now a much larger company with over 25 stores, and no one would recognize what was once just a small hometown bakery at the Wharf. But you can still get a facsimile of the original salami and cheese sandwich. Just order the Italian sandwich and ask for it on a beget instead of the sliced bread.More

The first time we stopped here for a quick lunch. Husband ordered a half French dip and salad and I ordered a Chicken Caesar salad. Food portions were good and tasted fine. We stopped there again for breakfast a few days later. I ordered an...almond croissant and some toast and he ordered a waffle. Again, portions were large but the toast was cold and almost burnt.More

They do have bread in all kinds of animal shapes. They're open Sunday mornings - you can take out or eat there.
