Foreign Cinema's reputation has been rightfully earned! The crowd seemed local and a waitress at another restaurant told us that the place is a SF institution. I made reservations a few weeks in advance just to be sure, and we sat within a few minutes of arriving. The restaurant features low lighting, stringed lights, old school speakers for movie sound... It was not the first impression that won me over. Grey concrete, industrial height ceilings and bare walls do not provide much of an ambiance. Nor does it dampen the sounds of competing voices from closely placed and fully occupied tables. But the food--that was something to write home about. I started with an excellent avocado toast that became an... More

I finally got to return back to Foreign Cinema for a late lunch on Sunday. They were one of the first places in SF to push the farm to table experience and I have been a happy guest for many years while I still lived in the city. Now that I live across the bay and I do not get... More

I've always wanted to come try out Foreign Cinema and finally did for Sunday brunch. We sat outside on a rainy day but didn't get wet due to the partial roof cover. We ordered some drinks and started out with the caramel pecan sticky bun. Main entrees included the Corned Beef Hash and the Croquet Madame All 3 were very... More

When next in San Francisco and more specifically the Mission District, make sure you get to Foreign Cinema. My wife had the Sesame Fried chicken and it was fantastic. I went for the Tea smoked duck and it was also amazing. Prices are very reasonable, great wine and beer list. Also, the choice of oysters was great and they were... More

This is a nice, informal atmosphere which was great for a casual business dinner where a bunch of folks were getting to know each other. The food was good and the menu varied enough for everyone to have a few tough choices to make. Would definitely go back.

I'm a big film buff, so the concept of FOREIGN CINEMA appealed to me. Sit outside and watch movies. Well, the reality is different, but it's okay. My wife and I DID sit outside, which I highly, HIGHLY recommend when the weather is nice. It is lovely. Very thoughtfully decorated, yet the walls of the surrounding, beat-up buildings are totally... Foreign Cinema has great food and great atmosphere. I wouldn't say that the food is to die for, but you won't be disappointed. Every dish is great and you won't regret it but it's not the food you will remember and will keep thinking about. What Foreign Cinema is great at is making a very intimate atmosphere. The courtyard surrounded... More

The setting is very funky with movies playing on the rear wall. Service is top class. Food is beautifully presented & tastes even better. Wine list is amazing with great advice from waiter. Desserts were a fabulous way to end evening although we shared 2 between the 4 off us.

Thank Michael D

Staying in Mission District

Neighborhood Profile
Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighborhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.
