Joes is the place to go for old fashioned Italian food. Everything is delicious. Pasta with meat sauce and Eggplant Parmesan were delicious. Portion are decent sized but not too large. Service was very friendly. The restaurant has nice wood throughout. Booths were nice to sit in. Pasta prices were very fair. Would go back for sure

OJ's is a locals restaurant which replaced Fior d'Italia in this location a few years ago. BIg portions, classic booths, old school menu. I loved the minestrone and burger for lunch, been eating it for 30 years, can't finish it anymore. Active bar, handy to Washington Sq. Not a foodie hangout, don't expect foam on anything.

We had a group of 15 visiting up in San Francisco and arrangements were made to have dinner Friday night at Original Joe's in North Beach. Due to our size we requested a private room which was the right thing to do. One thing about the restaurant in general, it's LOUD! So being in a private room muffled the din... More

We were on a short trip in San Francisco and was wandering to our next site to see and had hear from a friend that lives in SF and this place was one recommended to try. He was not mistaken the atmosphere was great. Old pictures on the walls. Counter to sit at for the regulars. The food was delish... More

The spaghetti and meatballs were nicely al dente and the chicken Parmesan was excellent. Service was not bad and the wine kept coming. Nice place to dine in sf.

Not the best choice we made in San Francisco. Not sure why we were asked to wait for a table, it's a large restaurant and many tables were vacant. We were shown to a booth, we would have preferred a table, but let it slide. Not the best food or service. I ordered the Cesaer Salad, didn't know whether to... More

Had lunch with an old school friend and found the return here after many years to be better than expected. First, the service was very friendly and attentive and there was little time between a request and delivery. They have a set of daily specials and I had the Wednesday braised Oz Tails that were very good, although the portions... More

There are so many great eating establishments in SF. On recommendation from our host, this did not disappoint. And, it's located in lovely North Beach. Being that it was a Friday night, we had made dinner reservations and I'm glad we did since it was quite busy. The front door staff was welcoming but our server, Monica, made the whole... More

We may have been underdressed, this place is somewhat fancy but we went at lunch time. Anyway food and most of the staff was great. If they want only people wearing a collar or jacket they should post that. Everything on the menu was authentic and delicious but if you just want great pizza cross the street...the best.

Visited on a Thursday night and the place was packed with people (many apparently regulars) with a great vibrant atmosphere. We were early so had a cocktail at the bar first - one of the best in the 3 weeks we were in the US. The meal was very good indeed, many, even expensive, restaurants now seem to be so... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
