This is a delightful small restaurant serving French/ Basque dishes. The staff are very attentive and the menu is small but offers good choices. We had fish that was beautifully presented and delicious. It was a very enjoyable experience.

The food here is really quite wonderful, the difficulty was the service was unbelievably slow, lack of attention - finished plates left forever, had to beg for them to be taken away. No fresh water, no wine followup - nice people but seemed like we were their burden not they customer/client. Will not go back, even though the food was... More

We can only rave about this restaurant. First of all, the food is out of this world - beautiful quality, wonderfully cooked, melting in the mouth. The best pork loin ever eaten. Unlike most restaurants, Fringale offers very good wine by the glass - the selection might be small, but the quality of the Bordeaux we drank was amazing. But... More

The special 3 course dinner was excellent. One of the finest meals I've had in the last year. Service and quality of the food top notch. I would recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner if you are in San Francisco area.

Compared to bistros in Paris, the service by the French staff is super friendly and very good. However, compared to bistros in Paris, the food here lacks originality and would be just average or even below average. Good for pre- or post-show dinners.

This small French SoMa bistro remains a favorite and is usually the first place we go for dinner when we arrive in SFO. We started with champagne and the special crab appetizer -- absolutely scrumptious! To accompany the main course we selected a bottle of the Pomerol (which was reasonably priced and excellent) to go with the rack of lamb... More

We returned here on a wet Monday evening, with construction all around the frontage. Once inside, however, it was the same friendly, bustling place we remembered from previous visits. It is not modern or trendy. The dining room is functional and the decor and furniture is forgettable. The food and the service are what this place is all about. We... More

Fringale is small, but in a good, intimate way! We returned last week for my birthday and wondered why it had taken so long for us to get back. The cuisine is French Basque with many French bistrot standard dishes, like duck confit and steak frites, all done very nicely.

Having been coming here for decades. Even with change of owners over the years this charming little bistro delivers solid food at fair prices in a demure setting.

The range of choices are quite extensive, it was easy to choose what to have. They have 3 courses for $45 or you can order individually, with mains being $25. The restaurant itself is quite cosy and warm, which was great as it was quite cold and windy outside. The staff were very friendly without being over the top. Our... More

Fringale pioneered the South of Market culinary renaissance as one of the first true French bistros in San Francisco. Featuring French/ Basque cuisine, specialties include spicy Monterey calamari with jalapenos & chorizo, foie gras terrine with nectarine compote, bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, and braised savoy cabbage with caramelized onion sauce. Also popular is traditional duck confit served with lentils "Du Puy" in red wine sauce.

The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blonde wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing meal prepared by one of the finest French kitchens in San Francisco.

In addition to a full bar, Fringale's wine list offers a fine selection of California wines along with wine selections from smaller French producers.

Staying in SoMa

Neighborhood Profile
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighborhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighborhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
