Ordered steak well done came out bloody rare, sent back once came out rare again. I was waiting for an apology or price adjustment but nothing. Pastas where flavorful but very small portions for the price. Old restaurant that needs to update their menu.

We liked this place for lunch. We had appetizers and pasta. The portions are large. The waiter was obviously disappointed when we did not choose the wine from the owner's winery, but got over it. We'd go back for a casual meal.

I had eaten at another nearby Italian place last week-recommended by T.A, it was pricier, not as nice atmosphere-wise and the food average. This place however was fantastic. We ended up here when we found the wait time for Tony's to be 2 hrs. The Veal dishes we had were perfectly prepared, tender, and so fresh and flavorful. Service was... More

The pastas were great as was the veal saltimbocca. The caprese salad was an I ripe hot house tomato and the whole dish was lacking in flavor. Kudos to management for fixing the issue.

We went to this place for dinner because it was close to our hotel and we had driven the PCH from Mendocino that day and didn't want to get back in the car. Plus this Italian restaurant gets good reviews. And it would have been a good experience except for one thing....the wait staff wants to make your bill as... More

This restaurant is in the top three of the best dining experience we had during our 3 weeks stay in California. Very good italian cooking and service with a good money for value ratio.

It was the night we arrived from New Orleans and our plane was delayed 45-1:00 leaving do to a storm over the airport. We had reservations and barley made them. We didn't even have time to go to the hotel to change. But that didn't matter. We checked in with the maitre'd and waited just a short time. While we... More

Dean Martin, Sinatra, and Tony Bennett serenade you as you enjoy classic Italian cuisine served with flair by tuxedoed waiters. Everything about this restaurant is classic, including the dish preparations. They are proud of their heritage and the food and service are typically impeccable. The pastas are home-made, they have their prosciutto drying in the basement and you can't go... More

We have eaten at North Beach several times before. Great homemade pasta dishes (made downstairs on the marble table among the many hanging prosciuttos). Real deal Italian food in a nice traditional setting. Excellent Caprese salad, excellent lasagna and carbonara made the traditional Roman way. Nice Italian wines featuring those made by the owner at their Sonoma vineyards. Sangiovese reminding... More

We went to this restaurant about 20 years ago and loved it then. We were so interested in seeing what it was like 20 years later and it's only gotten better. These guys are the real deal; a little bit like being in a episode of the Sopranos. The prosciutto ham with melon was unbelievable and the veal piccata was... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
