We were staying at the Fairmont and so thought we should try the restaurant here. The ambience and setting was very romantic and beautiful however, as a huge fan of Asian food it was nothing more than average. I would recommend maybe coming here for an appetiser and a couple of drinks to enjoy the music and the environment but... More

I give this place 5 stars because it is by far the best deal in town. Caveat, only if you go during happy hour from 5 to 7. Head up to the top of Nob Hill for 5pm and enjoy a $10 all-you-can eat buffet and (I recommend) a Mai Thai. Sip it! Trust me. It's strong! Get there for... More

My husband and I recently visited the Tonga room during our stay at the Fairmont. We read about this place in tour books and on trip advisor. Well aware of it being a tourist trap. The food was horrible!!! The soup was sooo spicy that we couldn't even eat more than 2-3 bites. Our main dish was horrible sorry I... More

This was our first visit to the Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel. We knew it used to be an indoor pool area for the hotel guests; and that a Hollywood set designer had been hired after WW II to design and construct the Tonga Room. It is magical - the lighting and sets are all excellent. The pool is... More

Best Tiki Bar in the U.S. Just watch Anthony Bourdain's program "The Layover." There is a pool in the middle of the room, with a band on a "barge" that moves across the pool as they play. There is thunder and rain as well. And the drinks are fabulous! You can order food as well.

What dreams are made of. Underground hotel bar with a live band playing in a pool on a moving Gazebo boat stage. Tiki drinks are solid. Don't overthink it / just drink it. Food is certainly workable too. Hard pressed not to visit anytime while visiting town. Only thing I'd change would be having them stay open as late as... More

For a tiki bar, the Hawaiian atmosphere was fun and the band was great. The food and drinks were not good; the Pina Colada tasted nothing like it should have and the waitress said it was a new bartender; regardless, we should have gotten drinks that tasted good; we sent them back and ordered beer. The food, being over $100... More

Our second visit to the Tonga Room after many years. Still a fun, unique and interesting experience. Enjoyed the band. A woman celebrating her 100th birthday with her family led an impromptu conga line around the room. The starters were a bit pricey but I was surprised how reasonably priced the entrees were. We liked the curried crab won tacos;... More

We went for happy hour before dinner. You can't get a better atmosphere. Although it is dark, the entire room is themed, complete with a boat in the middle of the water and "thunderstorms" throughout the night (I know this sounds like a Rainforest Cafe type restaurant but its really quite different). Definitely worth a stop in, even just for... More

Welcome to the South Pacific or Hawaii or Tahiti... This is awesome with the band floating on a boat in the middle of the water. Lighting and rain ( makes Rain Forest Cafe seem like a copy cat!) light of the sky ( ceiling) every so often... drinks in authentic tiki or coconut cups... Try the Mai Tai I may... More

Staying in Nob Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Nob Hill
Swanky and stylish, Nob Hill sits in the heart of the city and is home to amazing architecture and views. The hike to the top can be a challenging workout for those who forego a cable car ride, but they will be rewarded with some of the city’s most beautiful architecture adorning its peak. Originally populated with mansions after the Gold Rush, most if not all were devastated in the 1906 earthquake and fire that followed. Luckily all is not lost; storied hotels and Grace Cathedral surround Huntington Park. Having a drink or dinner while taking in the sunset and views at the "top of the Mark" is tough to beat.
