During our trip to Napa, someone recommended this restaurant to us! We were luckily able to make a reservation on the early side for later in the week, and we were super glad that we did! The food here is unlike anything I've ever had! They have a large selection, and the waiter did a great job on recommending some... More

Bix is off the beaten path but well worth the trip. The restaurant is down an alley in a brick building. The ambience is 5 stars. The night we went a man played piano as a woman sang beautifully in the background. It is not too loud to prevent a conversation but just right to give you the feel of... More

It wasn't possible to reserve a table as the secret's out. So I and my Bix Chardonnay (their blend) happily enjoyed a competent jazz trio- piano, bass, drums. The bar staff is uber-classy. The space and the vibe are unlike any I've previously experienced in SF. Great!

Stepping into this restaurant was like stepping in another era, with its Art Deco decor and lovely soft piano music of classics from the past. What ambiance! My son and I were seated upstairs in the gallery, with a view of the pianist and the beautiful bar. Our waitress was amazing, and did not charge us for some deviled eggs... More

In the past month, I've actually been to Bix twice for dinner. It had been a few years since my last visit. The food is consistently good, and they make seasonal cocktails which is great, when you have such lovely fruits available. The decor is a beautiful throw back and really sets a mood. This is also a place where... More

Started out with a party of 12, but had to add 2 more last minute and the staff was great to accommodate us without a fuss. Food and wine was excellent and the atmosphere grand scale old San Francisco that you want. Live music was a great touch but not too loud. Excellent dinner.

The idea of going to a jazzy piano restaurant sounds good in theory, but the piano was downstairs (we sat on the upper gallery) and the sound amplified - too loud for an enjoyable meal. The food was over priced and disappointing. We ordered desert to find it swimming in chocolate - too much!

Went there for dinner last weekend and this place did not disappoint. This speak-easy/prohibition-vibe-y restaurant felt very Great Gatsby! It's tucked away in an alley away from all the hustle and bustle. The live jazz music, dim lighting and impressive bar are all top notch. -1 for the lobster spaghetti. I recently had lobster spaghetti at Joe Beef in Montreal... More

Beautiful food and drink in a gorgeous restaurant. The only downside was menu was a small bit limited.

Speakeasy decor on two levels. Live dinner jazz, but you can still hear and talk. Lower level is wheelchair accessible. Menu is fresh and interesting.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
