We came here with keen interest to see how the new pedigreed owner and chef transformed Alfred’s, previously the oldest family run steakhouse in San Francisco. The atmosphere changed little except for some needed renovations and artistic touches. Some of the old staff still remained and the menu was roughly the same except for additional appetizers, many new preparations, reinvention... More

We came in and the ambiance was nice. We had an appetizer that was the seafood tower that was over seasoned so you couldn't taste the lobster nor prawns (shrimp). There were very few people there and we asked for a booth but informed we could not since we didn't have 6 people and only 5, yet later on they... More

Our concierge at the Hyatt Regency recommended this restaurant as my husband requested recommendations for a good steak and she also made the reservation. When we arrived we were asked to wait at the bar, despite the restaurant being very quiet. They left us there for 15 minutes before taking us to the table. There was no ambience, the staff... More

No customer service, unfriendly zereo atmosphere unless you like dark red decor, very low lighting and menus in tiny print.iknow a good steak but this restaurant doesn't, maybe because this is now owned by a large multiple and has gone the way of Mortons but Alfred's eat quality was poor and they couldn't cook it properly plus the 2 steaks... My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Alfred's Steakhouse during a resent trip to San Francisco. The food was outstanding, and the service was even better. We dined a bit early, so the place was not too crowded, but it did fill up at 7:30/8:00. The food is expensive but well worth it. Everything was fresh and very... More

We went there for lunch recently. The burgers were good but the bread was to die for. They did a nice job with the remodel. The prices have increased and the service is not what it used to be. Overall a very good steakhouse. We would recommend.

We dined with another couple last night at the new Alfred's Steak House in San Francisco. The restaurant was either sold or put under new management about six months ago. The new version of the old SF Institution is a real disappointment! The service was appalling -- Not just slow, but surly. After being seated at the very back of... More

We did get nice steaks here - but the service was a bit confusing. The waiter could not take orders for wine - and the somelier seems to be very busy. There seems to be a certain hierarki - and it result in a lack of service. But the food was excellent.

After regularly enjoying Alfred's over 36 years it has finally changed hands. The new owners have missed the mark with the new staff and menu offerings. Their "School Night Special" before the change was a bargain with several choices of steaks and sides. The new presentation is Prime Rib only, and the potato-like vegetable and creamed spinach were on the... More

We were spending a weekend in SF, we were staying at the Hilton next door to the restaurant, being it was pouring down rain Alfred's was in close walking distance. Realize one thing, this place is expensive, they have great steaks, don't get me wrong, but I really disagree that they automatically add a 20% gratuity to your bill. I... More

Alfred's: an oasis of steak, Scotch, and swank. Shaking up martinis and grilling dry-aged beef over mesquite since 1928, with unassumingly traditional service from a veteran staff.

Staying in Financial District

Neighborhood Profile
Financial District
The Financial District lies just east of Chinatown but can seem a world apart given it’s San Francisco’s version of Wall Street. The rush of business people make up a hectic weekday and add to a frenetic pace of life, but visitors who spend a few hours walking the narrow streets will be rewarded with fine examples of historic and contemporary architecture, including the iconic Transamerica Pyramid. After business hours, bars and restaurants quickly fill up with happy hour revelers. Stocks aren’t the only kind of market being followed, the Ferry Building Marketplace on the Embarcadero is a gourmet food emporium and farmers market that will satisfy anyone working up an appetite.
