First time to restaurant, 2:00pm lunch. Quick seating, grilled octopus appetizer, it was Best I ever had, attentive waiters although ice tea not delivered until a reminder mid-way through meal. Food preparation is excellent, dishes had impeccable taste, as good as one can hope for, one of best restaurants I have been to around the globe

Had dinner here and thorough;y enjoyed the experience. The food whilst being simple is well prepared and presented with great flavour and perfectly cooked. I had the lamb chops beautifully pink in the middle but a slight charring on the outside. The front area of the restaurant has a nice ambience with comfy chairs and the spit roast open fire... More

We came here for our anniversary because my husband loves mediterranean cooking. It is a lovely dining room, the service was fine and the wine selected was spot on. The small plates were delicious-we had grilled artichokes and eggplant and the grilled octopus. The entree was a big disappointment. We ordered the rotisserie lamb which the waiter had recommended as... More

Small mezeh portions but fun to share. Quality is excellent, and service cured and friendly. Flourless chocolate cake is gluten free and dark chocolate, absolutely cherry-on-the-cake of my dinner. People dress up for a dinner at Kokkari, but the atmosphere is so casual, welcoming and relaxed that there are no stigmas placed on tourist-wear (jeans and shirt) after a day... More

We were visiting my daughter and boyfriend in San Francisco and absolutely adored dining at the incredible Greek restaurant KOKKARI ESTIATORIO. We all loved the beautiful upscale modern décor, super-attentive service, and strong romantic atmosphere. From the Get-Go, our attentive waiter George energetically recited the menu specials, offering his delightful comments on foods we would certainly enjoy. So, hungry to... More

Disclaimer: make a reservation at least 2 weeks ahead. This is a very fine, but not so expensive restaurant. Ideal to go with couples. They have great and authentic Greek food. We ordered some appetizers, all of them delicious. And then I ordered a roasted chicken, simply amazing. They make real Greek coffee in sand; it was delicious too.

The atmosphere is warm and the constant buzz of people is not annoying but a bit energetic. The service has fallen a bit into the trap of superiority that most "in" restaurants have but it is completely manageable and is not a hindrance to the experience. Being a fan of the "lighter" side of Greek cooking I found the dishes... More

You would never think Greece is having economic trouble as Kokkari is always busy and full! Great food---authentic food ( my Greek friends say) and wonderful service. I always recommend this restaurant to SF visitors and to family and friends. I always look forward to this restaurant as always satisfies!

Besides delicious woos fire roasted lamb, they have tasty fish and traditional Greek appetizers. The service was very attentive without being obtrusive. It is possible to have a serious discussion there with colleagues. Everyone will be in a good mood.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
