Just Another Great Meal & Wines In August, we were back in San Francisco for meetings for my wife. This has been a constant for 15 plus years, with at least once per month business trips - and sometimes more - many more. Those are...winding down, as her corporate offices are moving to Chicago, so we have been doing our “swan song,” of San Francisco dining, making sure to get back to our favorites, while we still can. Boulevard, at 1 Mission St, not too far from the Ferry Plaza Building and the Bay has been one of our favorites, over the years, since we first discovered it. Well, we did not actually discover it, per se, as one of my wife’s San Francisco co-workers first recommended it, and we sort of filed the name away for later. Then, a year later, a friend, who is a Sommelier in San Francisco said, “You must visit Boulevard for their wines, but do stay for the food!” Two recs, and we booked Boulevard for the next trip. We did go for the wines, and stayed for Chef Nancy Oakes’ food. That was probably about 5 visits ago, scattered several months apart. This visit, was just under 12 months, since we had last dined there. Often, I have to meet my wife for dinner, as her meetings always seem to run over. This visit to Boulevard was an exception, and I think that it was the first time, that we walked through the door together - at least in many years. We were seated at a small table, along the windows, looking out onto Mission St, with a view of the open kitchen to my left, and to much of the main dining room. Over the years, we have ordered á la carte, but also enjoyed Chef Oakes’ Seasonal Tasting Menu, which is what we decided on this visit. While maybe not truly “farm to table,” Chef Oakes mostly does local sourcing, such as the Monterey Bay Octopus on the Tasting Menu. The wines, that were part of that initial recommendation, were still on the list. In some instances, we have turned the Sommelier loose to pair the wines, but as Boulevard has a very good half-bottle list, that was the direction I went with. As we often dine as a couple, a workable list of half-bottles will allow me to do my own pairings, without sacrificing to a B-T-G list (though Boulevard’s is a good one), or having to pair just the perfect 0.750 bottle with all dishes, and especially a tasting menu. All of the dishes were very good, plated beautifully, and in keeping with the Summer Season. Our service was perfect, and the pacing ideal - no long pauses, or rushed aspects. The wine service was excellent, and the stemware very nice. The only little complaint that I had, was that this table was small, but almost all along the exterior wall, are. I like the two “booths” across the aisle from where we sat, but then one’s back is to the open kitchen. This table would have been problematic, if we had gone with the Sommelier’s Wine Pairing, but with just 2 glasses each, we managed fine. The lighting is good, and we had the benefit of the early evening sky, through the windows. The noise level rose to about moderate, and especially when the little bar, toward the front of the restaurant, filled up - still, easy conversation was possible. There is seating at the front of the restaurant, but I find that with its proximity to the bar, it can get a bit loud, plus patrons entering the restaurant walk right beside your table. I prefer the area to the rear, closest to the kitchen, as it is usually quieter, and has far, far less foot traffic. I am not sure if we’ll make it back, but hope to, at least once more, before all of our trips point toward Chicago, instead of San Francisco - either way, I will toast Chef Oakes and Boulevard, and also our Sommelier friend, who said to go for the wines, but stay for the food. How correct she was!More

Although not a frequent customer I always try to take out of town guests here. The food is consistently excellent, and its just a beautiful space , right near the Bay Bridge. We just were there with cousins from France, and they were really impressed....Lots of pricey restaurants in the City, but at Boulevard you feel like its worth every penny !More

Boulevard does not know how to disappoint...it continues to have and adhere to the highest restaurant standards. The food is fresh, lovely, delicious, imaginative and we'll prepared; the staff takes excellent care of the patrons; the wine list is long and offers many possibilities; the...ambiance is welcoming. It's a treat; we will come back!!More

I recently returned to 'Boulevard' on 2/22/2020 after having not dined there for awhile. I realize what I missed having stayed away too long. I will be a regular again from now on. I brought a party of 7, myself included, to celebrate my daughters'...30th. Birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and the food and wine, as usual, was superb. The Staff at Boulevard are the best of the best. We could not have been happier with the Star treatment we received. This Restaurant is truly Number 1 on my list of Restaurants in San Francisco. We will be back again soon.More

The wine list is fabulous. The waiter was great. The menu descriptions mouth waters and the pork chop had to be sent back. Been there twice - this is the first time I experienced a snafu.

Slow, inconsistent service. Ten minutes to take the beverage order, only to have it lost and not delivered for another 20. Fish entree was grossly undercooked, then turned to mush when reheated. The evening was partially salvaged by their astute sommolier.

I was staying across the road at the Hotel Vitale for business and, a solo traveller, popped into here for dinner without a reservation. I sat at the counter and had the most fantastic meal. I loved everything about this place. A great, buzzy atmosphere....Superb food and very good wines. I defy anyone to find a better pork chop than the one this place does. My waitress was charm personified. The place was packed and service isn't fast, but the pace is fine and the servers seem to manage to stay on top of things. Watching the chefs at work - particularly the guy plating up - was great fun. I would definitely come back here, it was great.More

Boulevard is truly a San Francisco landmark with delicious food. The menu consistently evolves to integrate the freshest ingredients. This award winning restaurant is first class in every way - excellent food, comfortable dining, and good service. For example, the kitchen happily and exquisitely adapted...my dinner to omit milk and cream from my selected dishes. I ate halibut which was perfectly prepared and delicious. I brought 2 colleagues here and they were both extremely pleased with their selections as well. One ordered a lamb chop and the other one Sea Bass. The only downside from our meal on this day was that we were seated next to an extremely loud and obnoxious table. I can't fault restaurant for this but this restaurant can get loud depending on the crowd. If noise is a concern, it may be worthing asking for quiet table when you make a reservation. Boulevard is definitely a restaurant that has stood the test of time. If you are looking for a restaurant that everyone will enjoy - this is the place to go. The menus is diverse and accommodates most tastes. Also, be sure to view the plaque that appears along back of restaurant explaining history of Boulevard's building. It describes the unique story of how the Audiffred Building was saved during the 1906 earthquake by the creative thinking of the bartender of the drinking establishment then occupying the building at that time.More
