If you want a truly exceptional breakfast, this is the place. Yes you will wait in line. We waited 45 minutes. It was worth it. If you want fast food, this isn't the place for you.

Average waiting time here is 1 hour if you get that after 9am. The food is great and is absolutely worth it. Would've eaten there again if it weren't closed on mondays. This is a must when in San Francisco. It's the best French toast I've ever had!

Please note that only cash and debit cards are accepted. There is a small sign in the window that states that cc are not (bc of the popularity of the place, the wait can be 30 minutes or more. We were told the weekends could be even longer.) There are banks in the area. I walked two blocks down to... More

I waited 40 minutes to get a table and it was worth every minute. I thought it was great that the owner stood on the front step and talked to everyone in line. They serve coffee and water to you while you wait outside. The food was amazing! I wasn't hungry again until 6pm that night!

Even with a 30 minute wait, you have to try this place. Amazing eggs Benedict and my wife had the pancakes. We also took a couple of the crumble cakes to have later in the day which were also fantastic!

So we were recommended Mamas by a friend, who warned that there may be a queue... we weren't prepared for an hour and a half though! We persevered and completely understand why people were waiting though! I had a Californian omelette and my wife had French toast... both were divine. Incredible food, good atmosphere and great service... what more is... More

Absolutely fantastic breakfast, dungeness crab season, so had the benedict dungeness crab. Perfect! Friendly, efficient staff, owner standing at the door making sure everyone is happy in the line. Well worth the wait, do not let the long line scare you, it is definitely worth waiting for. Was not my first time here and will be coming back.

We loved this place. It is well worth the wait! Go there 20min before opening so you get seated in the first round! We loved the french toasts the most (with a side of bacon). Staff is lovely and it is nice to see the cooks fry up the food behind the counter.

Mama's was a good stop! The breakfast was good, the French toast looked incredible. We only waited 15 minutes.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
