I used to go to church right next door and always saw the line outside this place. One day we decided to try. The place is tiny. If you are willing to wait over an hour in line, with all the tourists, go for it! You won't be disappointed. The food was really good! We tried a French Toast, Eggs... More

We were waiting in a loooong queue… We were starving… It was one'nhalf hour to just seat… order and wait again… interesting atmosphere with people working, waiting and having breakfast… at last we had a delicious breakfast… it was worth to wait...

Great breakfast - had the Washington omelette with wholemeal toast and strawberry smoothie as did our host and really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and great service.

My brother said I'd need to wait and when I arrived the queue was 20 mtrs long. There was a buzz and chatter amongst the people so I thought must be worth the wait. As you get nearer the front the excitement builds as they pass the menu to the ones just behind; like the Olympic torch. The menu finally... More

We went to Mama's for breakfast on the recommendation of the doorman at our hotel. He wasn't wrong - they do a fantastic breakfast! The queue outside is well worth the wait and once inside you don't feel rushed and can sit back and enjoy your coffee and food. We both opted for dishes from the specials menu - the... More

Amazing breakfast! Having read about the queue we headed up early and arrived at 7:50 am. There was a small queue and it became longer quickly. Once open you go straight to order and grab a table. We had the French toast each and a portion of spicy sausage. Honestly it was the best French toast we've ever had. We... More

We went to Mama's for brunch and while the line was a bit intimidating, it was worth the wait. There seems to usually be a line outside the door and then there's a short line once you get in, at the counter to place your order and wait for an open table. The staff was friendly and they definitely make... More

My wife, daughter and I heard Mama's was great so we thought we'd give it a try. Having never been there, we weren't familiar with their "system". We got there just before 8a (they open at 8) and there was quite a line. We figured we'd file in when they opened, get a table and order, etc. Not how it... More

One of the must dos when it comes to food in SFO. A family owned restaurant with nice service, very good food. They don't accept credit card. If you go there during breakfast or lunch time ("rush hours") you may wait before you can entry.

Established in 1951.
The family of Mama and Papa Sanchez, serves up traditional and innovative breakfast dishes in "Little Italy", the famous North Beach District in San Francisco. Across the street from the beautiful Washington Square Park, Mama's legions of fans line up early and throughout the day. We use the freshest of local products, imported Italian meats to fill our fluffy omelettes, homemade jam, fresh baked breads, pastries and other delectable dishes. We invite you to try our little restaurant and become part of the Mama's Family.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighborhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.
