Decided to check this place out today and are glad we did. Went in early for lunch so we were the only people there. My wife asked if a certain drink was good and the manager Robert said “Do you think we would put bad...stuff on the menu?” I figured that he hated us after that, but since it was empty, he chatted with us and even threw in a guacamole appetizer. We learned everything from the extinction of the Vikings to how the French have over 400 names for each private part. It was entertaining. I ordered the roasted chicken sandwich as jus and my wife the croquet monsieur, which were absolutely incredible, as were the roasted potatoes and salad. Definitely a place we would return to.More

Our visiting French student wanted nothing more than a trip to San Francisco. Her greatest desire: to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Alas, the bridge was playing hide-n-seek in the famous fog. Hoping that given time, it would burn off (but knowing it probably wouldn’t)...we set out for lunch. We stumbled upon Castagna, and decided to give it a try. We were immediately welcomed by the owner, and before we knew it, he was conversing in French with our visitor. She was delighted. She proclaimed the Croque Monsieur to be delicious and authentic. I enjoyed the Pesto Pasta very much, and my hubby said the Pasta Bolognese was amazing. Bread served with the meal was incredible, and declared “absolutely French” by our French visitor. The restaurant is quite small, but appears to have a rather extensive wine collection. I enjoyed a mango mimosa. There was only one other party there when we were; travelers from Norway ( I think they said). They thoroughly enjoyed their meal as well. You will too. Go there. Bon Appetit! **And if you were wondering, after lunch we tried again to see the elusive bridge. Nope, still hiding in the fog. We told our visitor she’d have better luck in October or November. Maybe she’ll come back, and we can visit Castagna again!**More

We are lucky enough to live a few blocks away from Castagna. It is our favorite place to have a casual or romantic dinner in San Francisco. The owner and chef, Stéphane, turns out uniformly delicious meals with a very fine sense for wine pairings;...and the specials are terrific. Dining at Castagna is more than a fine ambiance and meal—it feels like going to the home of a friend who just happens to be a fabulous chef. We recommend it with our very highest regard for him and what he has achieved with this adorable and cozy spot in the vibrant Chestnut street neighborhood. Vive Castagna!More

Small, lively, hands on owner and delicious food are a great casual dining experience. Tight seating and noisy background but worth it. Beef stew, seafood pasta, veg pizza, stuffed veggies all were top notch. Wine list is nicely done complementing the small menu. Service was...friendly and knowledgeable with details provided by owner. A real rowdy table overwhelmed the noise level as the bar is close to the small number of tables. Alternative is outside seating.More

We stumbled upon this gem after a long day of travel. The restaurant had just opened, so we had the place to ourselves. My husband and our two boys, ages 12 and 16 thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We sampled the meat & cheese plate, pizza...with prosciutto and the made from scratch lasagna. Everything was delish! This was one of the best meals we ate while in San Francisco for two days. Highly recommend!More

We were originally looking for a different restaurant but it was full so we saw this tiny restaurant and decided to give it a try. This was our favorite place to take a break and relax after a long-long walk from the Golden Gate bridge....We ordered stake tartar and Tuna Tartar, both were great, fresh and delicious. For desert we had something simular to apple strudel, but it was a million times better than a strudel. I can't remember a name, will attach a photo of it. VERY TASTY FOOD! Thank you!More

We stumbled upon this small jewel during a recent trip to San Francisco. We went in for a late lunch (about 2 p.m.) and had a wonderful meal of pasta fruit de mer. The pasta was fresh, and included clams, mussels and calamari. The wine...list is quite nice and the tarte tatin was out of this world. First time we'd ever tasted salted whipped cream - yum! The service was excellent (well, we were the only ones there at the time) but you can tell this place knows what it is doing. The chef was writing out his dinner menu chalkboard as we ate. No leftovers here. One more thing, the dinner menu runs about $32 per entree, so even though the lunch menu is more limited, it will be just as good and cheaper.More

Close to our hotel, we wandered past Castagna to check out the menu. Very small, quaint restaurant. What caught my wife's eye was the duck confit. She loves it. Well, we just arrived in SF early morning and were quite tired so we only ended...up ordering steak tartar and a pizza. Both were excellent with top notch, attentive service. Hard to find duck confit, that's why I posted for anyone who loves that dish you can get it here! Highly recommend!More

Beautiful homes, beautiful people, and a beautiful
backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge welcome visitors to
the Marina. Originally the location for the
Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 (whose
remnants can be seen at the Palace of Fine Arts), much
of the land was filled and flattened to accommodate a
world’s fair. That ample space has given way to a
jogger’s paradise at the northern edge of the city.
