We wanted to try something local, and something other than the many Italian places in the northern part of SF. This was absolutely a perfect selection. Very friendly people, great relaxed and fun atmosphere, a small bar and a community table in the center of the room, booths and tables around perimeter. Looks like a neighborhood bar on the corner... We were craving some German food and were really surprised to find a very authentic experience at Leopold's. The place is busy which makes a nice atmosphere. We ordered a meal each but the portions are so large you could easily share one. We had to wait for a table at the bar but that was quite nice as well.... More

Leopold's was fantastic. My wife and I had dinner with my son and his girlfriend. Everything was great from the appetizer to the Apple strudel.

Bavarian / Austrian Atmosphere at its best. Great beer selection, schnitzel, spätzle, wurst!! So if you want to safe yourself a trip to Munich or Salzburg - go here! Only thing missing: mountains, cows next to the restaurant and guests in lederhosen and dirndl! Servus!

Great German fare! Delicious authentic cuisine, and terrific service! The menu had a great selection of both vegetarian and meat dishes. The weiner-schnitzel was perfectly spiced! Wait staff were dressed in typical German costumes. Very friendly and lots of fun for a first date!

Great atmosphere, beer and food! Crowd was joyful and friendly. Rarely do I see an Austrian restaurant. This was a wonderful surprise. If you enjoy a good beer and are up for a challenge, try the 5L glass boot! Servings sizes are .3L - 5L. There are also a lot of good German wines to pair with your meal.

We went to Leopold's on a Monday night as it had been recommended on two lists and was near our hotel. We were not disappointed- delicious schnitzels and strudel. Bierkeller-luxe atmosphere and decor. Don't go if you are planning a romantic dinner a deux- it is quite a noisy place with a youngish crowd, but good fun!

We came here a few times and despite the fact that it's always packed, the food is great, this is as close as you will get to high quality Austrian food in SF

What more could you ask for? We've traveled a bit in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Leopold's feels like it was taken directly from a Bavarian village and plopped in San Francisco. That's a good thing. The server was very pleasant and helpful, recommending Ayinger after finding that we liked Erdinger. The food was quite tasty, although we found the pork... More

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighborhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
