This is a real hidden gem, well off the beaten path, but more than worth seeking out. We had dinner at the Black Friar & can say unequivocally, this was the best meal we've had at any restaurant in years. The atmosphere is comfortable & cozy, not cramped, and Jenny, our server was wonderful - personable, knowledgeable & delightful. Chef... More

Reluctant to out this place. All the usual breakfast joints had lines out the door. We had ducked into this place the first day in town just to scope it out as a future lodging option and found that they did b'fast and dinner. So we circled back this particular morning and were the only ones there...the whole time we... More

My sister recommended this place, as she had eaten there before and is a real "foodie" from Maine. I was totally impressed with the friendly service, the quaint atmosphere and the absolutely delicious food! I began my meal with the lobster bisque, then chose scallops over rice. Both were mouth watering. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but in my... More

This is the second year that my husband and I have visited The Black Friar. July 2015 we stayed during the 4th of July weekend for our 20th anniversary. We enjoyed everything about The Black Friar. Our room, room 6, is the smallest on the third floor. It's cozy and perfect for 2. We were out most of the day... More

We were having one of those nights where you can't seem to find a restaurant that doesn't have a way-too-high-priced menu or a long wait time to get seated, and we stumbled across this listing and decided to try it. We are so glad we did!! This restaurant is off the beaten path, but so worth the walk! The staff... More

While the food was very good, the Black Friar Pub is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The pub is located on a side street and isn't somewhere you are going to stumble upon without looking for it. Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meal and we had an enjoyable evening... Our son had read that the Black Friar Pub was a "hidden gem" so we decided to try it. Food was fine but the menu was limited and in my opinion a little pricey for what you got. We were the only ones seated at a table at 6 o'clock on a Saturday night which made us wonder if this... More

Like another reviewer, we enjoyed dinner so much we went back for breakfast, and it was great both times. Friendly, fun place with excellent food and reasonable prices. It's just a few steps out of the way, which is the only reason I can think of that it isn't packed all the time.

We did what another reviewer did...went for dinner came back for breakfast. There was no wait either time, even on the morning of July 4th. Best blueberry pancakes I've ever had. It's a mystery to us why there is not a line out the door.
