Saw some good ratings on Tripadvisor therefore decided to give Pounders a try. Disappointing! It is located within the Polynesian Cultural Center, very convenient for tourists but the food lacks flare. Pounders still hands out paper menus (as opposed to QR code), and there is...only ONE pen for customers to register contact info (required by HI State for contact tracing purpose)... really? Masks are still required to enter the restaurant which is GOOD! All the staff members we encountered were super friendly. Two of us ordered 3 items which were marked as "most popular" on the menu - Ahi tataki salad, fish nuggets, mango pizza. We enjoyed the salad which had generous slices of ahi and overall it was tasty. The fish nuggets tasted like it was from frozen nuggets, missing the fresh fish texture. We were looking forward to the mango pizza as it sounded exotic; unfortunately it was most disappointing. There was too much honey which made the pizza too sweet. I love sweet and savory combo but this was imbalanced; the overly sweet flavor just overpowered the taste of the pizza. The ingredients of the mango pizza are good, just need to eliminate the honey or cut it way back. I would not return to this restaurant again. Seems like a tourist trap.More

Right on the grounds of the Polynesian Cultural Center. Great food and a nice atmosphere. Make sure to try the Fish Nuggets for the appetizer and the Po Boi sandwich.

Atmosphere, for Covid 19, was really good. The service, also really good. The food was as expected or better. A rarity in many of the restaurants we have eaten in during our two week stay. The menu doesn't do several of the dishes justice. I...watched as several other patrons' meals went by and had to ask the server what the items were. Glad I did! Dinner was great, bakery items to go were just as good. They needed more help in the Bakery area. Overall, I'm not sure I ate at the same restaurant that several people complained about in there reviews. We went twice, treated well, food was great both lunch and dinners.More

During our trip, we went to Pounders Twice! The first time was during the week. The food and service was excellent. The second time we went on a Saturday night. Again, the food was excellent. However, the service was pathetic at best. It was like...we were being served by someone who never ate at a restaurant. Managment needs to implement some 101 training for their new employees as well as a shadowing program. Totally inexcusable. Oh, the fish bites were excellent.More

Fish nugget app was well cooked but flavorless and didn't like the sauce either. We got Pele "spicy" pizza which I'm sure Pele wouldn't want to be associated with because it was as spicy as a ketchup packet. Also got the "holy cow" pizza with...fries and ranch and BBQ on it and it mostly felt like eating BBQ sauce on soggy flatbread. Both pizzas were super greasy and floppy seemingly under done. Other factors were also not good but I won't mention because covid probably explains it.More

Not good. The only thing that was good was the attitude of the wait staff. Our waiter was really nice but we didn’t get our food all at one time and then we did Get it it wasn’t cooked right and missing ingredients that I...had asked Extra for when ordering only to Be told they ran out of said item. Then the patties were way over cooked tasted charred Took almost an hour to get our food once seated and it wasn’t that busy due to only being able to seat at certain capacity. I would skip this place and do the food trucks next time.More

We've become regulars at this restaurant, for one reason: they serve fresh (unfrozen!!) local large shrimp daily and whatever it is they do to cook it, it comes out plump and succulent (not overcooked and rubbery) every time. My complaint about the shrimp trucks in...Kahuku that also serve fresh shrimp is that the shrimp you get are almost always overcooked and chewy from over-frying, and they just don't have the equipment on the truck to cook it properly perhaps. Pounders is always cooked to perfection. The price for fresh seafood is crazy-reasonable and $20 pp including tip and tax. There is a kama'aina discount available if you ask. You can get the shrimp on a variety of menu items including pizza, but we usually opt for the coconut curry shrimp with ulu (breadfruit) mash or rice, or infrequently their garlic shrimp. The sauces are definitely not refined but tasty in a "country home cooking" sort of way. They also have a small bakery counter with yummy bakery goods that are hard to resist. The coconut rolls are especially good. Service is always friendly and very international, since many of the servers are students at the BYU college in La'ie. They have a large outdoor patio area, with tv sets usually tuned to the surfing channel. There is plenty of free parking and you do not have to have a ticket to the Polynesian Cultural Center to eat here. Note that liquor is not served here.More

If you don’t give this place a 5 star, there’s something wrong with you. It’s famous on the north shore for a reason. If you like shrimp, go for the Po Boy. It will not disappoint!

Enjoyed a family meal on the patio when the rest of the cultural center was closed due to Covid Service was excellent and the chocolate croissants we took home for breakfast the next morning were rated the ‘bst ever!’
