Mama’s is located just outside of Paia on Maui.
The only reservation we could get was for 2:15 pm on a Wednesday afternoon so we took it. Heard it was expensive but really great. It was definitely expensive!
The food was good, but I’d have to say probably not worth the outrageous prices. $58US for the Ahi or Mahi-Mahi. Our cocktails were $18 each. The Winter Salad was my favourite part of the meal and it was $18 also. My fish was done perfectly in a nice curry sauce. The rice and veggies were ok.
Service was polite and our server gave us plenty of information about the menu options. They claim the fish is fresh caught every day and brought to the location, but one item on the menu comes from New Zealand so not sure how that’s possible lol
This place is busy but we were content to chat and people watch while enjoying some nice bread and butter with a small cup of very tasty tomato soup that came before our meal.
There is a good spot for photos by the beach out front.
I’m glad we went to experience Mama’s Fish House, but doubt we’ll ever return unless we win the lottery!
Expect to pay around $200 or more for dinner for two.

We went there for our 38th anniversary and the experience was like a fairy tale. The view was absolutely breathtaking and the food, words cannot do it justice.
We had a table with an unobstructed view of the ocean and palms and as my wife put it, "This may be the most beautiful place on earth." The appetizer (octopus) and entrées were perfectly prepared and executed and our hostess made us feel like we were the most important people in the restaurant and nothing else mattered except for our satisfaction. I have never had fish that was as flaky, moist, and satisfying as the Ahi and my wife said Mama's Stuffed Fish was absolutely exquisite.
Then the desert. The Hana Banana Crisp was likely the most delicious dessert that I have ever tasted and the black pearl, while very, very good, paled in comparison although if one is a real chocolate lover, you may find the most decadently delicious dessert you ever put in your mouth.
Of course there has to be a down side. Like everything on Hawaii, prices are high. Our bill for the above came in at slightly over $230 plus tip and valet (valet parking ONLY) so this is not a place you will be going to several times while you visit, but for us, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience that we will never forget and worth every single penny.
To sum it up, we could not be happier with our visit to Mama's Fish House.

We had heard many wonderful things about Mama’s Fish House....and it definitely lived up to our expectations! Food, ambiance, view, service all great. Only negative is the cost. $60 for Mama’s Stuffed Fish extremely pricey, but you are paying for everything else. You must make reservations and you must use their car valet service (not much parking otherwise). Great picture taking opportunities there. Definitely worth it for a VERY special occasion!

We just celebrated Alan's birthday at lunch at Mama's on 1/31. I must say that the signature dish of the day, Mama's Stuffed Fish with Lobster and Crab baked in a macadamia nut crust ($60) was totally exquisite, and possibly the best fish I have ever tasted. Alan also had the Crab Luau Soup ($18) which was equally delicious. Our server (Shane) could not have been more accommodating and answered all our questions happily. You know when you commit to eating here that it will be outrageously expensive, but sometimes it's just such a pleasure to be treated so well (from the moment you arrive) and enjoy a truly delicious meal. The grounds here add another dimension to the experience. They are so beautiful and worth a visit even if you are not eating here. This is one of the GOTO places I always bring guests just for the scenery.

We only decided to go to Maui about a month in advance so while we couldn't get dinner reservation, we were able to pretty easily get lunch ones. Everyone we talked to, including practically ever blog or travel site, recommends coming to Mama's.
The menu for lunch is the same as for dinner so you're not missing out on too much by coming during lunch.
They valet your car for free and you are required to do so. We tried to park nearby to avoid it and then they asked us if that was our car and said they would valet it for us. Then you check in at a desk by the parking lot. They'll usher you onward and then you check in at the desk down next to the restaurant. There was a little seating area to wait for your name to be called.
The cheapest entree is $50 so it's pricey to eat here. My husband got the Mahi-Mahi and Ahi in Panang Curry and it was the star of the meal! I got salmon and it was okay - not worth the price! As a side note, though, we had excellent service and loved the large, beautiful flowers in the women's hair.
If it's sunny out, you can get some great family pictures out by the water. Even if it's not sunny, you can get some great pictures out by the water, though the sun pops the color of the water to an unreal color!
As we were leaving, my husband said, since we had come to lunch from snorkeling, that he wished he had known it was going to be a really nice place so he could have gotten ready more but honestly, while the place seemed beautiful, it had a fairly casual and laid-back atmosphere. I didn't feel too out of places with my damp hair up in a bun and minimal makeup.

We have been hearing about this restaurant for many years and finally got the chance to go! It can be very challenging to get a reservation but if you are like us be the first ones there when they open at 11am and you can get in! The little beach, the view, the restaurant..all stunningly beautiful and so peaceful. The food lives up to the word everything looked incredible tasted amazing, the staff was so attentive to all your needs. The only negative is the price. All meals are around $50-$60 and then drinks are $15-$20. Again if you don’t mind the price the rest is magnificent!

We originally had reservations at 5:15, but upon realizing we covered the Road to Hana much more quickly than anticipated, we showed up at the restaurant at 3:00. I believe this restaurant is busy during all open hours, so make sure to get reservations in advance.
Since they were busy, we waited at the bar for about 45 minutes before being seated. The bartenders were very personable and we enjoyed our drinks, especially after some of the stressful blind turns on the Road to Hana. We highly recommend the Mai Tai. One of the bartenders said their recipe is from the 1940s and they sell 6,000 of this drink alone every month!
When we were seated, we had a quaint two-person table with a great view of the ocean. Even though it was raining, we really enjoyed the view. The service was excellent and we appreciated the recommendations and clarifications our waiter provided.
As for the food, we started with the crispy Mahi Mahi rolls as an appetizer and they were heavenly. Then, my husband and I both got the Mahi Mahi entree, and it was truly outstanding. I have never eaten fish that I liked, but Mama's Fish House amazed me with how good fish can taste. We finished the meal by enjoying the Kuau Chocolate Pie, which had a perfect balance of chocolate flavor while not being overpoweringly sweet.
While our meal was much more expensive than what we normally spend on eating out, it was worth the outstanding experience. If you are looking for a fine-dining experience with the best fish in Maui, you have your restaurant.

My wife and I had 4:15 reservations but after doing Hana realized we were going to be closer to 5 and barely had cell service to let the restaurant know. Not only were we seated in less than 30 minutes upon arriving (perfect for photos by the beach) but they did a fantastic job of celebrating our special event with a small table sign and complimentary light dessert and candle! Our server Jeff was fantastic and had great recommendations. If you ask us, the one thing you can't miss is the stuffed fish - filled with lobster and crab! But you really can't go wrong! Simply a magical meal and a fantastic way to end the Road to Hana!
Just remember - it books quickly so try and plan 3+ months out!

As a commercial fisherman, who has eaten most types of fish from the Pacific, this place was on point. We had the octopus and the shrimp wontons to start. They were delicious. It’s not easy to make an octopus fish that tender, but they did it. I had the stuffed fish for dinner, my wife had the curry, and both were perfect. The fish was cooked perfectly, and according to the staff, most of that fish is fresh caught that day on Maui. It was an amazing meal. Our server, Micah, was a knowledgeable local, and he did not disappoint.
Two gripes: the average cost of an entree is about $60. As a fisherman, I know what we get paid for our fish, and those prices are pretty high for a restaurant. The cocktails were $18 - $20 each, also really high. My second gripe is that they have salmon on their menu that is farmed salmon. Not only is farmed salmon sub par in quality compared to wild salmon, but it’s also considered a poor choice as far as sustainability.
I’d would have given this place 5 stars had it not been for those two gripes. I have to say, if you’re on Maui and don’t mind spending some money, you should check this place out. The location and the ambiance will not disappoint.

Omg. That’s the best way to describe our experience at Mamma’s Fish House. We were made aware of it by our neighbor who grew up on the island and flies back annually to visit friends and family. We decided to stop in without reservations at lunch, thinking it would be easier than getting dinner reservations on short notice. We showed up at 11:03, just as they were opening. We sat at the lovely bar to the left in the back of the restaurant and had the most knowledgeable bartender that gave us incredible service, drinks and tips around the local area. On to the food...exceptional, phenomenal, exquisite, mouthwatering and so much more. We were shocked to learn that the chef was only a James Beard finalist because we’ve traveled the world as foodies and this is now one of our absolute favorites that we can’t wait to get back to!! I could go on and on but trust me when I say, the food is worth every penny (and you’ll definitely pay a pretty penny...I think our entrees were $60 and they weren’t the most expensive on the menu). We also had the crab luau soup and i could have just eaten 5-6 bowls of that and been extremely satisfied....WOW! We had one of their signature dishes (stuffed fish with a lobster tail on top and surrounded by the most incredible sauce). If I could have licked my plate, I would have! Make sure to call for reservations if you’re going in high season (or show up at the door right at opening like we did)! Enjoy!!

Because this place is legendary, and because I am skeptical, I was prepared to be disappointed. Silly me. Our server Wyoneete and every other team member interacting with us (and with the guests near us) was welcoming and relaxed and had a moment to visit about the food, our travels, or whatever. Yet this pacing did not cause any delays. It felt organic to the place. And then came the food, every bit as memorable as the service. I greatly appreciated the cohesiveness of this dining experience, which is worth every penny.
[We had such a nice time at Mama's on our first day on Maui that we quickly made a reservation to return the day before we fly back to Oregon. It's *that* wonderful.]

We felt that the effort of booking Mamas Fish House for lunch was a special and enjoyable dining experience. The breathtaking view of the waterfront , the exceptional flower arrangements and the carved lacquered wood in a quaint and unique restaurant environment.
Service is attentive and polished. The food was exceptional with the fresh Ahi tuna with Asian spices , fresh shrimp in a very light coconut milk broth and a wonderful curry ahi and Mahi mahi combination. It is difficult to describe the delicate mix of spices that kitchen does so well.

My husband and I ate at Mama’s 10 years ago when we were last on Maui. We couldn’t wait to get back and bring our teenage daughters. For 10 years, we have been telling everyone we knew coming to Maui that they HAD to eat at Mama’s. As soon as I booked our trip, I immediately made reservations at Mama’s. The only reservation we could get for Tuesday night was 7:45 in the bar so we snatched it up and made another for 8:30 in the main dining area on Friday (we remembered it being so good we wanted to eat here twice while on the island). We would have loved earlier reservations because part of what makes Mama’s so special is the view and 7:45/8:30 reservations meant no view. Still, we were excited about dinner. We arrived on time for our reservation but had to wait for 25 minutes before being seated then another 10 minutes before anyone approached our table. The hostess was not friendly and completely unapologetic for the wait. We were told we couldn’t get a drink from the bar while we waited, which seemed short sighted on the restaurant’s part because there were a lot of people waiting for their tables and I’m sure they could have made a good deal of money on drinks. Our waiter was friendly and efficient and the food was very good. Unfortunately, our experience was definitely tainted by the poor reception by the hostess and the long wait, despite the reservation. While dinner was good, it wasn’t worth it to us to have the same kind of experience, so we cancelled our second reservation. I am sad to say that we won’t recommend Mama’s I’m the future without some caveats.

We had a 6:30 reservation, and arrived about 6:15, which allowed us to see the grounds before sunset. In a word, wow! We were seated after about a five minute wait, and had wonderful table near the front of the restaurant. We had a vegan and vegetarian in the group, and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu, ingredients, and options. The vegan had a tofu coconut curry with veggies that wasn't on the menu--highly recommended! The meat eaters had fresh fish that was to die for, after a sushi appetizer that was first class. As pointed out elsewhere, prices ain't cheap, but the quality is worth it. In a lot of mainland cities, you'd pay a lot more for a lot less. Don't miss Mama's on your trip, unless I'm jockeying with you for a table!

I was wowed by many sights in Maui, but as far as restaurants go, this was the only one we visited that I would consider meriting that level of praise.
Reservations were made several weeks in advance by a friend for the nine of us, so I’m not sure how easy it would be to simply walk in and receive immediate seating. Judging by the look of things when we arrived at 5:30pm, reservations are a good idea.
To spite its unassuming entrance and parking lot, the restaurant grounds are essentially magical. Most business properties in Maui seem to use every square inch to generate income while Mama’s Fish House leaves at least a quarter of the grounds open with strategically planted palms and tiki lights leading right up to a sandy (not rocky) beach. There is an occasional pond or bench on which to sit and gaze out at the beauty of the ocean.
As prices go, no Hawaiian eatery is inexpensive, and Mama’s is no exception. Our waiter, Mark, was equally impressive remembering all nine of our orders perfectly without writing them down. He kept a nice pace as the evening progressed and surprised a lady in our group with a birthday cake, which we all shared.
The bathrooms were like tiny art galleries combined with florist shops. I admit I touched a petal to see if they were real.
I suppose I should mention the food was delicious. My husband had the lobster-stuffed mahi-mahi and me, the shrimp tempura. Others in our group had no complaints. We left full and happy!
