I stayed at the attached hotel and wandered into the bar for dinner. The sushi was fantastic, the quality if fish is high and the cuts are proportioned well. Definitely not the oversized low quality cuts you often see these days. Don't ignore the specials!...The bartenders can pour you a beer or a neat whiskey if you want but if you let them mix a cocktail your mouth will thank you. Speaking of bartenders, pull up to the bar and they will make you feel welcome and at home and before you know it you'll have forgotten your troubles. The staff makes the place.More

We only intended to visit for a quick drink, but we stayed hours. The staff was gracious, friendly, and knowledgeable. It has a warm vibe that was enjoy encountering.

We visited Vana on our last night of our vacation and we were able to score a last minute reservation online. Our server was friendly and offered some great recommendations, our sushi was fresh and wonderfully tasty. They were very accommodating to my preference for...non-spicy. I loved the garden dining atmosphere and mood lighting. We found prices to be on par with other places we dined while in Hawaii (actually, our bill was the same as our lunch in Lahaina that day).More

It’s a humble place with a humble entrance. It is full of beautiful people, most of them travelers. It is not a fine dining but the prices are similar to one. It is worth to visit but if your are a sushi expert do not...have high expectation. We experienced a good service from the staff and we would like to comeback in our next tripMore

We reserved a table at Vana Paia during our honeymoon while staying next door at the Paia Inn and it was a very expensive complete disappointment. The highlight of the meal was actually people-watching the other people at the restaurant as they also came to...the same realization. I know that restaurants are still "figuring things out" after COVID and I also know that Vana has been through a few chefs. But they've got to fix some things if they want to be in business much longer. We give it a big "do not recommend". The location is cute and has a lot of potential. We won't knock it for that. If you don't believe the review, and you go there anyhow - get some of the kushiyaki skewers. They were the best thing on the menu (but not worth going there for). Where to start?! Service: our main server was very inexperienced, didn't know the menu, and blatantly made up incorrect answers to questions if she didn't know the answer. We heard her repeatedly tell customers that different things were her favorite thing on the menu after she'd told us that she was a vegetarian and didn't eat most of the food there. When bartenders or kitchen staff delivered food/drinks, they gave inconsistent answers to some of the same questions that people asked. For example, we heard about 12 different reasons of why they were out of salmon, and some of them were frankly not plausible. This service might have worked fine at a burger joint, but it's not acceptable for a high end sushi place. You'll notice that we also had some disappointments with both food and cocktail that a professional server should have never accepted as being ok. Cocktails: If you ignore my review, at least go during happy hour so that your cocktail disappointments will only cost you $10 instead of $16-18. We tried 4 different cocktails and only drank 2. The other two just sat on our table until we departed without any question about why there weren't being consumed. Most of the drinks were either far too sweet or they just went a little too far with trying to have artsy combinations that didn't quite go. Definitely avoid their Vana Colado - a play on a typical pina colada. It was the worst that we tried. The table next to us had the same issue. Food: Their Kushiyaki skewers were ok. We had two of the sushi rolls and they were ok....but they weren't outstanding. They were about the same quality fish that you'd expect to get at a nice grocery store deli....definitely not at a high end sushi place that's 50 yards from the ocean. They had grilled salmon on the menu, which we were going to get, but they supposedly "ran out of salmon already that day" even though we had reservations for shortly after they opened. I also ordered some o'toro sashimi. I love o'toro and have had it at many restaurants around the world. Of the 5 piece plate, I only ate 2 because it just wasn't good. I'm not sure if they had problems thawing frozen fish or something, but it didn't taste fresh at all. Very disappointing. And again, any experienced server should have seen that we left behind $30 worth of fish and asked about it. But nope...just cleared the table and gave us our check. Paia is a very small town. Remember that when you see something like "#8 restaurant" that there's probably less than 20 places in town to eat. At their price premium, they really need to be #1. Save your money and go next door to Flatbread.More

We had a special family get-together at Vana Paia on our last night. Everything was as good as we had hoped! Outdoor tables were delightful. Service was great - attentive without being overbearing. Craft cocktails were creative and delicious. The food (I particularly enjoyed the...wagyu beef skewers) was excellent. Prices - well, this is a fine dining restaurant in Maui, so I knew what to expect. No bargains here. 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!More

The food was excellent and fresh. Ordered the seat salmon roll and the sushi sampler. Happy hour knocked down cocktails to ten bucks. That could save you $4-8 depending on the cocktail. There was no food discounts for happy hour. Everything plated and presented wonderfully....Make sure to have reservations.More

Just off the Hana Highway and 100 steps from the beach. Small, attractive restaurant and bar with Balinese decor. Cocktail selection was inspired and excellent. Big bummer was mini-martinet of a hostess who viewed a reservation-less couple walking into a nearly empty establishment as an...imposition rather than treating them as welcomed guests. Fortunately, a friendly and attentive server took care of us from there. Best part of meal was a selection of Kushiyaki (skewers of vegetables and meats). Tried sashimi and an ahi roll, which looked like it was made by a fourth grader. Although fish was advertised as “local”, you’ve had better at your local 7-11.More

Reservations are a must, as is a fat wallet. But if you score a dinner reservation for sevenish, you can treat yourself to a sunset at the nearby beach (Paia Bay) and a short stroll to the restaurant, which provides delectable sushi at the outrageous...prices demanded by fashionability. Your order will be beautifully plated for Instagram, and taste freshly of the foamy brine. Sit in the "outdoor" patio to enjoy some of the local Paia scene. Splurge here or at Mama's down the road for your highlight meal on Maui.More

Relatively new (within 3 to 4 years) restaurant to hit so we put a pin in it... orgasmically yummy for the sushi lovers in us. Sitting in a pretty backyard atmosphere with the gusty trade winds blowing the palms above, Vana celebrates the flavors of...Hawaii and showcases locally grown ingredients and Japanese inspired dishes -- locally sourced sushi, tapas, and cocktails. Started with Kushi Gold oysters done three ways (which they promptly sold out on so we felt thankful), the sushi sampler, some spicy rolls, and the OMG moment was the uni and scallop with ikura, tobiko, and shiso. I couldn't stop talking about the taste explosion on that one. Dynamite. Ended the sushi exploration with some kushiyaki skewers... sampling the gamut. Pairing cocktails started with the palette cleansing Empress indigo gin, agave and lemon... then their spicy lillikoi mezcalita with habenero. Ended with a Hibiki cocktail to pair with the A5 wagyu which blew my wife's mind 😍More

My husband and I got a last minute reservation here for Valentine's Day and it turned out to be a GREAT move for us. He got the pre fixe menu and said it was some of the best sushi he's ever had! I got a...steak skewer and a California roll, both were great! The bistro lighting and quaint atmosphere felt very romantic and the service was lovely (and the roses for the ladies was a nice touch!).More

Overpriced and underwhelming. Don’t come here hungry! Portions are very small and will leave you needing more food, even after spending over $100 like we did (no drinks). Two scallops will cost you $32 and it’s $24 for two ounces of salmon. There are many...restaurants on the island. My recommendation is to spend your money somewhere that will provide more value for your dollar.More

We are traveling “foodies” and have eaten our share of great meals around the world, but what this little restaurant is offering is just remarkable. We ate here two nights and had drinks a third, so I can honestly say that we tried most of...the menu. The bartenders were great, especially the woman from Annapolis, Maryland. And our server/ bartender Colten was outstanding! Here are some of the dishes we tried (a couple of them more than once too): the local prawn salad, the oysters, the Vana spoon (sea urchin), the eggplant, the mushrooms, the cauliflower, the yellowtail jalapeño (sashimi), seared salmon belly, tuna wasabi, lava roll... All of it was delicious! The chef who created this menu is worth his/ her weight in gold! They also had special holiday cocktails which were refreshing and tasteful (thankfully not too sweet). This place is a real find and we highly recommend it. It’s a fairly small and intimate restaurant, so it’s probably smart to make reservations. We just sat at the bar, which was very comfortable too.More
