I started with the smaller portion of seafood chowder, which was filled with seafood ( the only local seafood in it was the fish, our waiter informed us that no crustaceans are local to Maui) , not heavy with cream or filler.
My main dish was the fish of the day ( I can’t remember which fish) “doree” which was excellent.
Extensive beer and wine choices.
Kayla, our waiter, was great. She was the perfect blend of friendly, professional, personable and knowledgeable about both the food and wine menus. She recommended an excellent wine to pair with my entree. She was fun to talk with. She was working a number of tables,
but didn’t act rushed and the team seemed to really support each other.
Ambiance/ Setting was relaxed, casual but tastefully deigned with a nice breeze coming off the ocean and a lovely sunset.
The prices were high ( my partner had seafood pasta, at $47) but all on Maui seemed expensive, so it was in line with the medium/ high end restaurants)
If lucky enough to go to Maui again, I’d definitely go back!

Casual dining experience right on the water! As honeymooners we requested a table by the ocean and it did not disappoint. It was an overcast night but the sunset would have been beautiful from our table. If you're lucky you'll get to see turtles on the small harbor or in the water. Our waitress, Kayla, was superb and extremely helpful with the menu. Appetizers were great. We did not try their Ahi bruschetta, their signature app, but could have gotten 2 pieces (instead of 4) for half price which is a nice deal considering the price for just an appetizer. Our entrees were delicious. A single pizza can serve 2 easily (especially after some apps); we brought more than half home. Overall, nothing too exciting, and more casual then you think, but the experience and food were still great.

Have had a few meals at Honu with different family groups. The host/hostess were always kind and accommodating. The serving staff took the time to explain menu items and make some viable small talk. We got some great wine recommendations from our server. The menu is not so big as to be intimidating, but big enough to offer something for everyone. From catch of the day to pasta to oysters to apps, I haven't had a disappointing choice yet. Make a reservation, or show up and hang out at the bar until you are seated, either is fun.

I may have thought the food was over-the-top IF I hadn’t nearly choked on it when I really looked closely at the price of what I ordered. Waitress recommended the ahi appetizer as what “Honu is known for.” We ordered it thinking it was probably around $20. Got the bill and it was $38 (for four small slices! I was expecting prices like Red Lobster, but instead felt like we were at Ruth’s Chris or something...and it was only LUNCH!
That being said, we were famished after two 1-hr+ dives at Mala Wharf and just wanted FOOD! Honu is conveniently located and they didn’t mind if we were dripping wet from diving. Kayla was very attentive and food was served in a reasonable time. And yes, the view is gorgeous even if it’s not at sunset.
It was our first time dining out on our trip and we were thinking that if every casual restaurant like this in Maui had these kind of prices, we were gonna have make our own meals at the condo, or skip two meals a day. Luckily as we explored more and more dining choices in the area, we realized Honu is the exception, not the rule.

Now, this review is during the pandemic , so all the restaurants are operating with a limited menu.
-After we were seated , i noticed a bunch of fans all around , going full blast, yikes, just hope no one had covid, otherwise , we may be doomed, all the windows and doors were open, so that helped, i did ask the waitress, if the health dpt had any issue with all those fans, they don't , oh well.
-the diner was fine, i had the appetizers ahi poke on rye bread with tomato, 38$, four pieces , it was very good and more then plenty for a main dish, i also had the soup squash , very tasty, my husband had the pasta with mussels, nice too.
Why 3 stars, well, even so it was good, it was nothing special, i could have made all those dishes. I am being picky. We are glad we tried it, it is on the water and if you are lucky enough to get one of those tables, the view is grand and you are away from the fans. I doubted we will go back

My family and I were so excited to have dinner reservations here. We heard great things about the food but never expected to be treated the way we did. It was beyond just blatant disrespect, it was racially charged by their manager, Luke. When a white family checked in, they were welcomed by Luke. Over and over again. Once my Hispanic husband asked Luke a question, he disregarded him and told him to wait outside. At first we took a step back to think about what just happened. We saw more people checking in and again, given the red carpet treatment. This time my husband and my white son-in-law went back in 20 mins later inquiring about our reservation and Luke yelled at my husband. Telling him, “I don’t need your attitude. What do you want from me, dude?” My daughter and I were dumbfounded. Lost for words and deeply hurt by his blatant disrespect/racism towards my husband. An employee walked up to see what was going on and he tells us, he will look for a “better” table for us. Meanwhile 2 oceanfront tables came available and he conveniently sat us inside. I couldn’t stop crying after this. I was sick to my stomach. We live in 2021 & was in disbelief that a manager would treat anyone like that. The waitress knew what happened and suggested we go down the street to Star Noodle. She apologized for her managers behavior and we left broken-hearted. Even though Star Noodle was sold out for the night, they sensed something was wrong and the nice hostess said she would make it work for us. Our night wasn’t ruined because we made a choice to not let the actions of Luke reflect our time on the island. Luke, we forgive you. Our hope is that in the future, you see people for their character not the color of their skin. You have a sticker on the door saying “Practice Aloha”. Practice what you preach!
***side note: I messaged the owner, Mark E on Facebook messenger and on Instagram to share this with him privately but he never responded. I searched the internet for an email address but couldn’t locate one.

My husband and I came here for lunch after arriving in Maui. The prices are "hurt me" but the setting is quite nice. We were seated indoors by an open window and had a great view. Then they seated two other couples in front of us outside. Oh well. We both ordered Mahi Mahi sandwiches for lunch at about $30 each. My husband really enjoyed his but mine was a bit burnt on the bottom. All I could taste was char but I was so hungry, I ate it anyway. The fries were good, being a mix of regular and sweet potato. There were lots of tasty sounding choices on the menu. Maybe next time I'll try some pizza.

We ate here three times during our stay. The service was good. The seafood chowder was excellent. The ahi sausage pizza was so goodie ordered it twice and we had said we would not get pizza on our vacation. The kale salad was very good. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Short story: unbelievable in every way. View, food, but mainly, the service.
Longer story: The issue we have sometimes in the islands is the price we pay for meals feel like it relies more on the view and location to justify the premium, while the quality is mediocre encrusted with ponzu and macadamia nuts. At Honu, this is not the case. The ingredients were stellar, the flavors were fresh and different, and the drinks were incredible. Accompany this with unbelievable ocean views, and you have a great experience. But both of these were not the highlight of the dinner. The best part was the service. Our bussing and wait staff was on point. The best part was Pam, our server. She gave honest and excellent advice about the dishes, and even explained WHY she recommended one dish over another, which was very helpful.
This dinner was the highlight of our meals on Maui.
The pizzas are thin-crust and excellent, even the simple margarita was delicious. The soba noodles with tuna were spectacular, and the kale salads were actually great (many other salads on the island have been over dressed or of poor quality). The bruschetta is NOT over-hyped. It is amazing.
SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT. The pot de crème is world class.
Unreal dinner. Worth every penny.

We were just in town for the day and went with a large group to Honu Pizza. i expected some kind of a slice of this and a slice of that pizza since we were part of a group tour, but Honu Pizza really knows how to wow the crowd. Everybody had a ssalad and pizza. My husband and I ordered the Kale salad with wonderful pomegranate seeds and apples and a light dressing. This was so fresh, it was wonderful. We all had a choice of our own personal pizza. I ordered the margarita pizza. It was hot, yummy cheese, and lovely flavorful tomato sauce. A perfect pizza for sure! My husband's pizza was hot, lovely melted cheese and lots of pepperoni. The service was amazing for having such a large group. The servers were friendly and patient being very sure each person's order was correct. They were great with the extra napkins, too. Be sure totake a minute to go out to the deck if you are seated inside. There is a wonderful view and if you do not come with a group, ask to sit outside it is just beautiful! When going to the ladies room, take your cell phone so you can take pictures of the fun artwork in the bathroom. Not sure about the men's room. If you are looking for a good meal, in a nice atmosphere, with great service go to Honu Pizza!!!

Honu Seafood is located on Front Street north of downtown Lahaina in a row of restaurants facing the ocean behind the Safeway Store. You'll need to hunt for a parking place on the street and perhaps walk a fair distance.
Book far ahead for a dinner reservation because 40% of the tables have been removed due to COVID restrictions. A family in front of us attempted to get seated at 6pm and were told all tables were booked for the next 10 days.
Once you get in, the dining area and the food are excellent. My sweetheart and I were seated on the porch in a perfect spot to enjoy a Maui sunset over the water. We started with fried Washington State oysters that tasted like they had just been shucked. My wife order the generous portion of beer battered fish and chips that featured 3 fresh filets sitting on a mountain of fries and a tasty cole slaw.
I was more adventurous and ordered a wok fried whole fish. The fish that day was a Nabeta that rarely makes an appearance in the market place because fisherman tend to keep them for themselves. While the fish has aggressive teeth like a dog and spikes along its back, it was seriously delicious. It came with a generous helping of fresh green beans and quinoa and was covered with a black pepper/hoisin sauce. It is the kind of dish where nearby diners ask you "what's THAT?"
If you order the whole fish, get the biggest one you can because they are quite bony. It is an experience that you may never find on the mainland.
We had no room left for dessert, but the couple at the next table proclaimed that the butterscotch pot de creme was outstanding.

Literally oceanfront. Spectacular sunset views over the water and of the Lanai island. The fried chickpea amuse-Bouche were amazing. My Caesar salad was made using locally grown butter lettuce and was so green and crisp and fresh: the dressing was tangy and perfect. My husband’s tuna was fresh and seared delicately. Service was attentive and friendly. A+ evening. So happy

Into a disappointing week in Maui due to ongoing Covid restrictions, HONU was a wonderful surprise! The four of us are foodies, and have had many 5 star dinners in our lifetime. Our dinner tonight at HONU ranks right up there! Service from the minute we walked in, our knowledgeable and friendly server, Pam, were just preludes of what to come. We opted to share two appetizers, the house special Ahi Bruschetta, and the Grilled Octopus. The Ahi was served as generous servings, so fresh, but we loved the Octopus! Tender, flavorful, alongside a generous serving of edamame hummus.
Then, the entrees. Three of us opted for the Seared Sashimi, with Shitaki mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes. Wow! Think Hawaii comfort food! We couldn’t stop raving! Our other guy opted for the Scampi , (which he claimed was very good) but he didn’t have a chance to brag! This was one of those entrees that is so unique from anything you’ve ever had before, you can’t stop talking about it!
All of the choices we made were on the higher price point of the menu offerings, but the servings were very generous, and the food quality was well worth it.
And, we saw the turtles!
We will definitely be back!

I had a bad experience here for dinner last year- but this lunch was terrific. The Ahi Bruschetta was fantastic. Really, maybe the best ever. I could eat that morning , noon and night. We split a seafood scampi which the first time it was served, mysteriously had no scampi in it! Our waitress was mortified and brought some and voila- the dish was delicious. The sauce was perfect and I think we both could have snarfed up another dish but demurred. They also made a mean latte. And to top it all off we had seats at the window and the surf roared in right there. It was perfect Hawaii.

We got a reservation on our final night on Maui (sad!) and had a lovely time. Although we didn't get an oceanfront table, views were spectacular, and we saw a great sunset. Ordered oysters on the half shell for starters - fresh and crisp, and enjoyed the Avalon Seared Sashimi and Ahi Meatball Pappardelle (which sounds quite odd, but definitely worth it - absolutely delicious!) entrees. Dessert was a fantastic berry tart that was large enough to share (but I should've ordered my own!). Overall, a wonderful experience that we highly recommend. We'll be back!
