Lava Lava was convenient to our lodging at Lae Nani. It’s a typical tourist place. Does not accept reservations. Cocktails rather watered down. Wine selection minimal and terrible.
Our server Kaya was friendly and responsive. My husband ordered the Gorgonzola pizza, which had barely any Gorgonzola flavor to it.
My starter was the Hukilau chowder, which was awfully pedestrian.
I ordered the Ono fish special, served with smashed potatoes and mushrooms, plus a white sauce and a roasted red pepper coulis. About 10 minutes after ordering, Kaya came by to inform me that the mushroom were being switched to a vegetable menu, which was a bummer. I asked for the coconut coleslaw instead. No problem.
I was served a piece of fish balanced on top of a pile of rice. Kaya rectified it quickly and my fish was replayed with the potatoes and slaw, but all the sauce was gone. So she brought me some sides of sauce.
Hats off to the manager, Robert, who came by to personally apologize for the mix up. Which rare ally wasn’t necessary but was appreciated. He was also bussing tables, a sign of a good manager!
Overall, the food was a three, the drinks a two, but the beachside ambiance and the stellar service was a five. Great location with beautiful view of the water.

Breakfast on the beach ! what could have been better. First of all the beach, view and of course the sand was a highlight. The waitstaff were helpful and when asked about what they liked and the banana muffins were to die for. Everything we ate was perfect and the coffee delicious. Great place to stop and enjoy !

We really liked this place for the location and ambiance. Many of the tables are in the sand on the beach!
We’ve had dinner and breakfast here.
Dinner was awesome, we ordered an appetizer with fried artichokes and calimari and then a Hawaiian pizza.
Sadly my breakfast last week was not as great as dinner.
I ordered eggs Benedict. The plate looked beautiful… until I cut into an egg to release the yolk. It sadly was very hard boiled. The table next to us ordered two plates of eggs Benedict and experienced the same issue! The waitress brought us all “poached” eggs separately in a dish but sadly they were not even poached properly, they were almost raw, swimming in water. I’m not joking, half the ramekin they brought it in was water. Another table sat down and we all overheard them wanting to order eggs Benedict. We all immediately turned to this table and said, maybe not that dish today!
Our waitresses for both breakfast and dinner were awesome though, but the kitchen maybe needs some help with cooking basics!
We do like this restaurant though but I had to take one star off because our breakfasts were not even close to being cooked properly.

I was disappointed with the restaurant but mostly from the attitude and treatment by the staff. The views and vibes are great with outside dining. However, while some of the staff was accomodating, some were rude. I have a shellfish allergy and was told the only safe item was to get a hamburger grilled in a pan because everything is cooked on the same grill. I couldn't get the fries either and was told that I would need to choose the rice or a salad instead. I understand that they were doing what they could to be helpful but when I received the bill I was charged for my side dish. The hamburger was also very salty but when told that having the fries wasn't safe and was offered a couple of alternatives I didn't expect to be charged and was not mentioned to me when asked to choose. They did adjust the bill but didn't seem happy and debated it with me. I mentioned it to the hotel thinking it was the same owners but apparently, it's different ownership.
The following day, I was waiting to check out and decided to sit near the ocean for a few minutes. There was no one in the area, however, a staff member from the restaurant approached me saying that I couldn't sit there because they were expecting to be busy later and I hadn't asked permission to sit there. I reiterate, there were numerous empty tables but she chose to walk over to the obscure area where I was sitting and told me to leave. The atmosphere and music make for a comfortable experience but the staff unfortunately can ruin the vibe. The restaurant is also overpriced for what you get.

What has happened to this place? Food prices increased dramatically and service is well intentioned but not the quality of a $50 main course and $18 drinks. The food quality is a solid 3. Have been going there since it opened but won’t go back.

The wait is extensive but it passes by with the music, the view, and the ambience. Once we were seated after 1:45 it was down hill from there. It took our server 20 minutes to take a drink order of 1 glass of wine and 4 waters. The appetizer never arrived and the server brought it after dinner. The chicken fried pineapple rice was cold and not edible. The server, whose only interaction was that she was from Michigan, was by far one of the worst I’ve ever encountered. If you’d like to spend $300 for awful service and a 3:30 hr excursion then you should look into a snorkel trip. This was just not a good experience.

We visited the LavaLava Beach Club today, entering from the beachside. Since no one was there to seat us, we found a table ourselves. The waitress arrived fairly quickly, but instead of a warm welcome, we were immediately scolded for not checking in inside first—something that, according to her, was “clearly stated on signs everywhere.” Well, we didn’t see a single one, and I even double-checked on the way out.
She did bring water promptly, which was the only positive aspect of this visit. Then she asked if we had already decided, impatiently pointing at a QR code on the table. Nowhere was it indicated that scanning this code was required. In any decent restaurant, a menu is provided automatically. When we asked for one, she seemed visibly annoyed, complained about having to go back inside, and eventually returned with a menu.
We ordered cocktails and desserts, which apparently was a cardinal sin at 5:15 PM. The waitress made it very clear—through her attitude and demeanor—that she was irritated we weren’t ordering dinner. When the food finally arrived, she had the audacity to clear our dessert plates before we were even finished! Then, without a word, she slammed the check onto the table.
I have rarely experienced such rudeness, especially not in Hawaii. And in the U.S., where service staff rely on tips, this behavior is absolutely unacceptable. A complete disgrace. Never again.

A great setting! We stay close by for a couple months every year and eat there 2-3 times a week. Always enjoyed the place, their food and the staff until last year. A staff member became upset when we asked for a menu rather than viewing it with a QR code. We she finally did come with a menu, she threw it down on the table and stalked off. We left.
We love the FOB sandwich and decided to try it again this year. We made the misstep of arriving 5 minutes before 12:00. Hostess was busy viewing her phone. We didn't expect to be seated, but didn't expect to talked down to. We left........

The eggs benedict was pretty good but I can't get past the bad service. We never got checked on after our food was "delivered" to our table. No refills on our water. The waitress was kind of rude. Gave it another try two days later for lunch and 2 members of our party didn't get their food until 15 minutes after the other three. It wasn't until I said something to our waiter, who was also the bartender very busy making drinks, did they know it. Wow. The service is severely lacking.

The food here is great, the atmosphere is fun but on the loud side and the drinks are amazing. Our family of 4 (husband, wife, twins age 12) ate here twice for dinner and both times we were happy with the service, food and atmosphere. Expect to pay $25-40 per entrée and about $10-12 for specialty drinks. The reason that I am rating the LLBC four stars is because they close at 9, and they really mean they close at 9. We arrived at 8:30pm thinking that we would have plenty of time for dinner and dessert, but when we were finished with our meal (at 9:10pm) and asked to see the dessert menu, we were told that the kitchen had already closed and that we would not be able to order anything else. This was quite disappointing as it was our last night in Kauai and we wanted the extra special send-off. For future diners, arrive an hour before closing. Lol.

I can’t describe how subpar this place was. The server forgot us for about 20 minutes after we ordered simple drinks. The food was $40+ a piece and tasted $20 at absolute best. I’m offended we spent time here.

Lava lava gets a huge thumbs up for the vibe - lots of outdoor tables, cornhole and other party games for kids and adults alike, steps from the ocean and great music provided by a local performer. I was disappointed, however, in the food and drink as it doesn't quite live up to the surroundings. The flatbread we ordered was overcooked and lacking flavor, the chicken fried rice served in a pineapple was all sorts of dry and the fish, a bit lacking in preparation. And yes, you certainly can pay $15-20 extra for your cocktail to be served in a large, engraved bamboo cup, but I wouldn't bother - the drinks were meh and pretty overpriced. I would do what the locals do and order the beer. Doing this again, I might head to Lava Lava for happy hour, some fun games and then move elsewhere for the main course.

This has become our first stop after landing on the island! Brought our daughter and granddaughter. The only place on the island where you can dine with your feet in the sand! Food is very good, yet casual. We all shared a salad and chips and tropical salsa. The fried fish and chips and the fried fish tacos were top notch---I might go with the fish tacos. The SPINUGULA salad was excellent! Just can't lose with this restaurant.

Good food. They make the dishes slightly different from what is often offered 'standard'. You just don't get used to drinking from plastic glasses. In my experience, you drink wine and beer from a real glass. Nice live music and a beautiful view. Hawaii is an expensive island, so eating out is also expensive compared to what we are used to in the Netherlands.

Still here after 4 days and they have one more day to redeem themselves. Not overly impressed so far snd will do a full review after but for now we have felt invisible and not welcome, even though we are hotel guests. Service at happy hour has been appalling and breakfast this morning was cold and overcooked. Other good has been great. I have messaged the hotel and not had a response and we also mentioned to one waitress how we were feeling after waiting 30 mins to order a drink, by which time happy hour had finished and it was too close to dinner for the snack we wanted, but she didn’t seem to care.
