We came here after the Punaluu Black Sand beach. The lines were out the doors and down the sidewalks on both sides, but the staff worked hard to accommodate all. There was a bus tour there. The menu had a good variety and prices were...very reasonable for Hawaii. Food was okay, although baked goods were excellent. The smoothie was very good. We tried eating on the back patio but was hounded by flies. My experience here this time was better than the last time I was here. Worthwhile stopMore

Easy to find this spot and lots of parking. It came highly recommended and there lots of customers. We ordered malasadas and some other pastries, plus some sandwiches. We were on our way to the Volcano Park and it was highly recommended. The major issue...was the malasadas that promised filling did not have filling but were dough altered. The strawberry malasada was definitely real filling. You need to order at one of the cashiers and then wait for your number. There are restrooms available. Nice place out back to sit and enjoy your baked goods. Good place to stop on your way to the Volcano Park or on the way back.More

This is bakery combined with classic old-style road stop with gift shop, food counter, and more. It is fairly unusual for Hawaii since places like this are relatively uncommon here, in contrast to the continental United States, presumably due to the short driving distances in...Hawaii. We stopped here on our drive between Pu'uhonua O Honaunau and the Volcanoes National Park. We got a loaf of great regular Hawaiin bread, plus some excellent malasadas - plain, cream, and lilikoi. Punalu'u Bake Shop is a must-do when you drive through Na'alehu on the south side of the island, whether you are going from Hilo to Kona, or Kona to Hilo. Na'alehu is a sleepy, quaint town with a farmer's market that we stumbled upon on...a Wednesday afternoon, but the real big star of Na'alehu is Punalu'u Bake Shop, also known as the Southern-most bakery in the USA and I knew this because I saw this on a baseball cap worn by a guy on the plane ride from Honolulu to Hilo on Hawaiian Airlines (see my review - will never fly Hawaiian Air again), and yes, it's on the Punalu'u Bake Shop website as well. The shop is filled with mostly tourists that pour out of the tour buses and tour vans, and I have no idea how this place managed to stay in business during the Covid pandemic as it was clearly the tourists that made this place a bustling success - there were long lines going out from the building when we got there but we were not complaining as we also love this bakery and want to see it succeed. The gift shop had a lot of touristy knick-knacks that appealed to me, especially the mermaids sitting on a half-clam trinket holder, but I didn't want to pay $16 for it and now in retrospect, I should have. Service was super friendly and there were a lot of young people behind the registers. I was thinking what these young people were doing here in Na'alehu; early summer jobs? Living here? Commuting? I ended up purchasing a Lilikoi-glazed malasada, a plain malasada, two Kalakoa Bread Loaves as gifts, and a Punalu'u Bake Shop logo bag. I asked for separate containers for the malasadas so I could eat them at the hotel in Kona but ended up bringing them back home to Oahu, and the plane ride did something to the glaze on the malasada; completely blew the glaze right off the malasada - thank goodness I had it in a plastic bag or it would have been a sticky mess in my back pack. RETURN FACTOR - Yes, totally, and this time I will eat the malasada on premises to prevent plane glaze blow-out.More
