Valerie is the owner of Bread and Water, and she is renowned sea kayaker, chief cook and bottle washer at the restaurant, accommodations hostess, & has the butterfly house! We stayed at her Tipping Bucket Farm, in the Artist Room, where accommodations are minimalist but adequate.

Prior to the lavender festival, we decided to stop in for a quick bite to eat. Definitely, quick doesn't occur on the island. Yes, food is homemade and to order, but on a festival weekend staff was limited. Not happy that "jelly' for breakfast was only a 1 inch packaged indefinite shelf life variety. . Really, buy local was the... More

Wonderful food, excellent service and interesting and homey atmosphere! We stopped for breakfast before the Island Lavender Festival and returned mid-afternoon for a late lunch because breakfast had been so good. Everything is done to order and is excellent. This business has won awards for being "green", and gently prods it's customers to become "green" also. Just a wonderful experience... More

Bread & Water looked intriguing -- the perfect mix of food and prayer, or should that be prayer and food. In any case, the prayer is optional but the food was excellent. The egg salad sandwich was generous and delicious. I can't recall what my friend ordered, but it too was very good. And the cherry pie -- with what... More

I rented a kayak and paddled Jackson Harbor. They also have a small kayak museum with a story to tell about great adventures. Do not miss that! They are also a cafe with lodging as well. I appreciated the hospitality and helpfulness of my rental. Great prices too! Thank you Valerie and I will be back!

I visited the joint on a 4th july weekend. They are really nice people and well managed. Given the crowd and how other restaurants were rude to us, they were the shining star in my trip. Good food for vegetarians too.

If I would come back to Washington Island it would only be for this amazing gem. This place is homey and green! We had oatmeal and toast for breakfast and couldn't have been more satisfied! Owner was very helpful with activities and thanked us for finding them during our adventures. Really wish they would have had a vacancy the weekend... More

We stopped for lunch looking for vegetarian food. We ordered soup and salad. Unfortunately the salad was very stale and had no taste. The soup was extremely thick and not warm. We told the waitress about the food but did not receive any response. Will not visit again.
