Nestled on the shores of picturesque Lake Onalaska, the Red Pines Bar & Grill is a destination location. A casual restaurant delivering high quality fare, we are known for our cozy, rustic atmosphere, hand-prepared walleye, lake perch, in-house smoked catfish and ribs, half pound burgers and brisket as well as our delicious homemade pizzas, soups, sides, dressings, and sauces.

A picky teenage Daughter can find something on this menu (I have one so I know). The food quality and portion size can fill my insatiable son (I have one of those too). The atmosphere of being Up North and overlooking the water and bonfire while only driving 10 minutes has that vacation type calming effect for my wife which is what she loves. For me its a 2 way tie for what I enjoy the most. The Tap selection highlights local breweries and is constantly updated for the latest brew and seasonal taste which makes it awful easy to enjoy a pint while soaking up the sun over looking the water. But I'll tell ya right now if you don't order the fish tacos at least once...you haven't lived.

The excellent reviews brought us here for the first time tonight - an absolute delight! Loved the homey atmosphere, efficient service and the food was wonderful. The pan-fried haddock and perch were tasteful, hot and well prepared. Service was prompt and waitress was very attentive. Will absolutely come back again!!

While traveling in the area, we went to lunch at Red Pines. We really enjoyed the whole experience. We both had salads that were delicious, with fresh ingredients and tasty dressings (raspberry vinaigrette and white balsamic). Our seating location on the covered patio afforded us a beautiful water view. Our server Alison was super friendly and efficient - just the right amount of attentive. We highly recommend Red Pines to anyone.

My husband and I stopped here on our way home about 1:00pm on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy. We chose to sit inside because it was hot. We ordered two small pizzas. They took forever to come. The owner apologized and said the tickets had gotten mixed up. The pizzas were good but we were there a few minutes short of two hours and we weren't in the mood to sit around. We go there around once a month and service is usually much better. It's clean. The waitresses are friendly. With the virus you have to order from your phone or ask the waitress for a tablet. If you don't ask for a tablet you'll sit there forever because the server doesn't volunteer one. She assumes you know and are just there to drink.

Sorry for the delay in your order and the obvious miscommunication. Since you do come in at least once a month sad to see a 3 star review based on one bad experience and nothing for the other good times that obviously brought you back. To clarify, our menu is online but our guests are not required to actually order online. We are doing our best during this crazy time to come up with ways to keep our guests as safe as possible - our online menu has been well received by most of our guests. We tell everyone as soon as they are seated where they can find the menu and we are happy to offer our Ipad if the customer does not have a phone. If you prefer the Ipad - just let us know. You are correct that we do not volunteer it to every table as again we are trying to avoid unnecessary sharing/touching of items.

There's a special magic to this place. Maybe it's the fact that the owner is on site and works alongside this well-trained staff to host, run food to tables, tend bar and add a smile to the experience.
All the basics were covered too - the beer was cold, the food came out hot, the bathrooms were clean, the menus well balanced with a solid range of crowd pleasers (including walleye cheeks) and perhaps the best cheese curds I've ever had.

Beautiful views, sports bar atmosphere, great food, and fabulous service. I can see why this place is ranked 1st out of 38. Our server was very friendly and informative about the menu which has something for everyone. We had the prairie melt burger on rye-yum! With the location of the TVs, we had a perfect view of the Badger game. The only bad part…..we don’t live close enough to come back every week!

Decided to try Red Pines for dinner while visiting a friend who is new to the area. It checked all the boxes: casual enough to not mind our hiking gear, reasonably priced, and near the water.
It was a Friday night, so we did wait 30 minutes for our table, but we could hang out on the patio while we waited. Luckily it was good weather for that. They had music playing and you could get drinks at the bar as well.
We were seated in the heated portion of the patio. They have blankets in case you’re cold, but the heater was plenty warm.
Their drink and dinner menus have a lot of options!
The gluten free menu, brought without having to request it, was very helpful. I had the haddock and shrimp, which were wonderful, especially with their house seasoning. I tried the sweet potato fries as well, which were perfect. I can handle some cross-contamination, so I appreciated that the menu explained why the fries were not technically gluten free (the fryer) and I was able to order them anyway.
It was a slower dining experience, but that was perfect for a relaxed Friday night. The staff were helpful and friendly, as well, despite it being a busy night.

Our party of three had a Saturday lunch here. It was raining, but we were able to sit outside on covered deck. We were told the menu was "online" so I would advise looking into this before going. They do have a few available in print but "they may not be accurate". We all had something different ( Chicken/Pineapple wrap, Mushroom Swiss Burger and Chicken wrap). All were good. It seemed that most people were locals which tells me this was the place to be!

To clarify, our printed menus are "accurate" just not complete as our full menu and daily specials are online. Given todays climate, restaurants deal with regular price increases and missing items from distributors all out of our control. The online menu allows us to respond immediately to those changes and to keep everything up to date. I do not see us ever returning to regular printed menus. Thanks for understanding!

This place was packed when I arrived, which is a good sign! The fish and chips were delicious. It's unusual to find fish pan fried so lightly and delicious. The chips tasted like home made (nice change). Waitress was attentive, yet not smothering. And the ambiance is great - right on the water! I was pleasantly surprised by all of it and would recommend for you to try.

Red Pines has become the weekly treat to ourselves.During these crazy times we have never felt any concerns with the staff and patrons and how they conduct themselves in handling the challenging issues we are dealing with. Clean, courteous, and the FOOD! Treat yourself to great food service and views at the Red Pines. O and PS they've upgraded the Bloody Mary's WOW! 😉

The first time that we went it was a Friday Night so the wait was pretty long, but we enjoyed drinks on the deck while we waited. The next time was a Wednesday evening and we were seated right away. The food was absolutely delicious. The walleye was done to perfection. The blackened fish un-taco was also delicious.
Take the trip.

We have been so impressed with Red Pines! There huge menu will meet anyone’s needs, great tasting food, cozy atmosphere including throw blankets outside on the patio, clean restaurant with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
We will continue to come back even though we live a hour away.

It was all together an enjoyable evening. There was a wait, but the live music out on the patio coupled with the grounds and view of the river made it a delightful one.
We were 4 adults and two children. The wait staff was attentive and friendly. The menu was varied, offering something for everyone. We all enjoyed our choices. I recommend the Walleye, and my husband the Bolognes. The Cheese Curds, Fried Pickles, and Fried Walleye Cheeks appetizers won't disappoint.

Went on a nice, cool day with some old friends and started with their hearty bloody mary's, which in these parts comes with a beer chaser of your choice! Wow! The beer is delicious, too. And of course, there's a cheese curd in it, yum-yum!
This place is a supper club, which is another very unique cultural establishment in the region: think community bar & grill. I'm also told there are always different types of lottery games you can purchase from machines for a matter of quarters, such as scratch tickets ("scratchers"?)
Other friends recommended the walleye from here specifically. I had a walleye reuben sandwich and that was exceptional. You can also have the walleye deep fried with french fries as more of an appetizer, and that was also very tasty. The walleye is breaded and fried and suits the other elements of the classic reuben well. I'd order it again. They also make their own potato chips and they are perfectly crunchy!
They also had an excellent Cobb salad. Skip the "Asian" ahi tuna dish, though. Stick with the river fish.
Seating on the patio has a beautiful view of the river, and on a cool day like this one, the temperature was perfect. The service was very relaxed and friendly. Prices are very reasonable.

The bruschetta over here is amazing! I personally love the environment, the music, and the warmth from the terrace. Warm cocoa and tea after the meal are a must as well. Would recommend it anytime you're looking for a meal while looking at the vast and precious frozen lake ❄️
