Vientiane Noodle Shop came to our attention when we read that “Top Chef” host Kristen Kish and judge Gail Simmons visited the restaurant when they were in Milwaukee filming the 10th season of the show. We stopped by around 1:00 pm on a weekend on our way to another store nearby. The restaurant was quite crowded, but the staff seemed to run the place efficiently.
We ordered Fried Vientiane Sausage, Pork Larb, Chicken Pad Sieew, and Beef and Meatball Pho for our lunch. The qualities of the dishes were quite large, and the leftovers were more than enough for another meal. All the dishes are flavorful, but we liked the Fried Sausage and the Pad Sieew better particularly because the meat was tender and largely free of chewy bits. The flavor combinations of the sausage were quite distinct, and the Pad Sieew had a mild but relatively complex flavor profile. The ground pork in the Larb and the beef in the Pho, however, were not from the best cuts of meat and had a lot of gristle (tough elastin). The Larb was also too salty; with all the spices and fresh herbs in the dish, we didn’t think it needed so much salt to bring out the flavors. The taste of the Pho was just fine; so, our search for the best Pho in the city continues.
My overall impression is that the restaurant serves flavorful Laotian dishes but tries to keep the price low for their loyal customers in the community by using inexpensive ingredients such cheaper cuts of meat. We will for sure stop by again when we are in the neighborhood and want a quick lunch.

As others have said, parking is a nightmare, but the food is worth it. The restaurant is small and weird, but again that pho was worth it. The ladies room is akin to a water closet just big enough for the toilet (the sink is outside the toilets). That Pho was so, so yummy. Aromatic and flavorful and all the add ins were nice and fresh. Piping hot on this cold day. I also enjoyed the fresh spring rolls. The food was awesome, but maybe uber there instead of driving over and searching for a place to park.

My dad and I ate here last night. It was cold and rainy and the Pho soup hit the spot. Delicious beef and meatball soup. The spring rolls were fresh and full of yummy ingredients and the curry was spicy and delicious. They made it with half pork and veggies for us and we took half home. Huge portions reasonably priced. We'll be back.

Order the beef meatballs on the apps page. They are the best! Pho is pretty good too! Parking is a pain but it's worth it!

The only place in Milwaukee with beef raw laab. So good. My husband and our favorite place for PHO and laab. When I was pregnant with my third child and all I crazed was their deep fried shrimp, boba tea, laab, sticky rice, sticky rice mango. Best authentic cuisine all around. This is tuck in a corner on the busiest street. Parking is always a challenge. But don't get discouraged. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. My husband and I travel to Vietnam a lot and Laos and Thai. Their fried rice hit home, and reminds me of the fried rice I had in Vietnam and Thailand. Amazed food and staffed is very well proper .

My 9yr old daughter and I love pho, so where always looking for some authentic dishes. We stopped here based on reviews and loved it. I can honestly say it's some of the best I've had, and the bubble tea has whipped cream on top.. Great! The prices are a a bit much for the proton size. Cozy family restaurant.

I recently moved to Milwaukee I am going to go and try this place but I move from Appleton wi I swear there is a Hmong style market on every corner there with amazing pho and egg rolls to die for I don't mean these small egg rolls all these viatnamese restaurants sell they are hug with meat veggie and noodles and pho all places serving it with beef paste, chili garlic paste, dried garlic, fish sauce, bean sprouts, Siracha, dried red pepper, hoisin, lime, jalapeños and some have sugar and lettuce type thing for add ons in your pho they also all have papaya salad made in front of you with papaya, Tom., baby eggplant fresh, fish sauce, tiny green beans, garlic, peanuts and I'm sure I am missing stuff but always served with sticky rice where can I find a menu like this in Milwaukee Vietnamese papaya is not at all like Hmong style papaya and no one ha sticky rice...

I eat here about twice a month as it's a stone's throw from work.
I love the Pho. I've had it at other places and there's no comparison. The spring rolls and egg rolls are fresh and tasty, always. My absolute fave is kao poon (I call it kaboom). It's a coconut milk and curry based soup loaded with rice noodles, basil and chicken. I get it mild and it's pretty spicy!

Gosh are my pipes hot. And by "pipes," I mean my esophagus.
And the "hot" is not a painful, heartburn-like hot, but the delicious sting of a spicy fried noodle that left it's ambrosial trail as it slid from my throat to my stomach.
Ambrosial trail. Am I a little over-the-top? Who cares? It was scrumptious!
My wife and I are fortunate to be able to dine at numerous places around the city of Milwaukee, but this afternoon we thought, "Hey. It's been a while since we ate at a good Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese/Japanese/Laotian restaurant." I recalled seeing a few places in Milwaukee's Silver City neighborhood so I suggested we try a place there. After a little Googling, we settled on Vientiane Noodle Shop.
Vientiane is a small, slightly disheveled little place off of National Avenue. It's just the kind of place you'd expect might have good food. For an appetizer we ordered egg rolls. They were great. Small and stuffed with fresh ingredients and then fried in very hot oil. They were greaseless and their light skin crumbled under the slightest utensil pressure. Drizzled with a little sweet-sour sauce, I could make a meal out of these.
We also paired our meals with a couple of cream sodas: a red and a green. We ordered one of each so we could try them both. We preferred the red -- it had a taste of berries while the green had a more floral flavor.
Our entrees were Tom Yum Gai Soup (my wife's) and Lard Na. I ordered mine spicy knowing I was taking my life into my own hands. I like my Vietnamese/Laotian food hot and hot is what I got -- I only had to get up and leave the table 3 times to clear my head, if you know what I mean. My wife enjoyed her soup although I never tried it. Looking at a bowl of hot broth while my pipes were inflamed just didn't seem appetizing, but her soup sure looked good.
For as much as we enjoyed our lunch, it appears we ordered the wrong thing. Vientiane is known for their Pho. The waitress told us after our meal that people come for that dish specifically and a quick glance at a few Internet reviews confirms it. Get the Pho at Vientiane.
I will be returning soon to give Pho a try. I'll try to remember to come back to Yelp and update my review after trying a bowl of this brothy, noddley delicacy.

The now defunct Bangkok Orchid Thai restaurant had the only Haw Mok Gai dish in the city and when the owners retired, they took their recipes with them and would not share them with patrons - I know - I asked for Haw Mok Gai. Bupkus. So I searched high and low looking for something comparable, in Milwaukee and even on all my travels around the country and overseas. I have never found Haw Mok Gai. But luckily, there's something somewhat similar - Kang Phet. And it's at Vientiane Noodle Shop. Though it depends on who's cooking the day you go, most of the time the Kang Phet is fabulous. The Fried Rice is also better here than at most places in the city. I've enjoyed many of their dishes, but keep coming back to the spicy, tasty, delicious Kang Phet. Friendly, fast service, great hours, discounts - all around Top Place for Thai. I've brought many friends to this place and they tell me that they now go on their own. Very worthwhile to check out - don't let the look of the place deter you. It's not fancy or high falutin', it's just really, really, really good.

I don't live in Milwaukee anymore. I would almost move back for this restaurant. Wonderful food, entertaining service (there seems to be a rotating cast of family and friends serving.)
