I was having out-of-town guests in for a funeral so I stopped by a few days early to check out what they could do for me in person. From the time I walked in I was taken care of well with all my concerns answered....We arrived and our tables were waiting and it was a great night. There was a basketball game going on close by so the place cleared out and we felt comfortable sitting around and talking extra long as we enjoyed dessert and after dinner drinks. Great service and food. Parking was tough and had to pay $30 for each car down the street but it was a wonderful night. Of course the atmosphere is incredible, see website. I have been there many times over the years but my guests loved it for the first time. Of course I will be back. One guest is severely gluten allergic and was taken care of well.More

Visited Maders for a wonderful dinner with a group of friends. We stayed in Milwaukee for a pre-holiday weekend and this was on our list for dinner. Have always had great food here and again we were not disappointed - food was great, we had...a wonderful server, I believe her name was Holly ! She made the evening that much more enjoyable with her knowledge of the menu, and her great personality ! Look forward to our next visit back.More

This review only pertains to the Christmas Day buffet. Mader's Christmas Day buffet may be the biggest ripoff I've ever experienced with a restaurant. I called a month in advance to make reservations for Christmas Day, no one ever told me it was a buffet,...it was implied it was the regular menu with regular service. I was very disappointed to see a buffet as the only option when we got to the restaurant. This buffet was about $60 per person ($60!!), it was outrageous! Also, the food available could have been better, it wasn't hot and I even had to ask for red cabbage, there was no sourkraut either. The trays were poorly labeled and we had to lift each lid top ourselves to get what we wanted. For $60 there should've been people there lifting each lid tray for you and explaining what each food item is. Biggest ripoff of my life.More

Drew H, I'm sorry that you had a bad experience on our most popular day of the year. Mader's has always offered buffet only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, and Mother's Day. Red Cabbage and Sauerkraut are part of our buffet offerings. It...More

Dear God, that was bad dinner... Service was good and friendly, but the food was airplane quality at best. Three of us at our table had the SauerBraten and it was just tasteless, the spatzle looked like it was out of a box and the...liver dumpling in the soup was rock hard. They went through this before in 2000 when the son took it over and I am sad to see they are zero star level AGAIN.More

I made reservations for my mother's 101st birthday. In the reservation I clearly stated what a big event this was. (How many 101 year old do you know who can still live on their own and walk to a table in a restaurant?) Then I...followed up with an email. When my brother arrived at the restaurant, he reiterated it to the hostess and waitress. Absolutely nothing to recognize a monumental birthday. Food was soso. No bread or rolls with dinners, which I thought is standard. Not returning.More

Took our family here before a show nearby. This was where we went when I was a child, but they are nothing like I remember. The cheese and crostini appetizer came with toasts so hard as to break a tooth. We upgraded to the veal...in the schnitzel and shrimp, but there was too much breading and very little veal. What was there was tasteless and overcooked. The 3 shrimp were good, but we were supposed to get asparagus which the waitress said they were out of, so we got about 3 slivers of carrots. For almost $50 they should be ashamed of themselves. Never again.More

I didn’t have high expectations for the touristy German thing, but the food was very good. Not only the wurst and the sauerbraten, but I had the duck which was among the best, simply prepared duck dishes I can remember eating at a restaurant in...the U.S.. Service and decor were on the mark as well.More

I’m from out of town and came here for a work meeting. I have many food allergies. The waitress and cooks made extra effort to make simple changes to menu items so I could have my first choice selections for main course and dessert. They...were so kind and accommodating. Aside from that, IT WAS DELICIOUS. Going to try to come back before we head back home! This will be a staple on return trips for sure.More

I was here with a group. We filled the private dining section in back. Coming in, I was amazed at the cases of German artifacts, wood carving and stained glass. The meal began with salads, then a main course and finally dessert. I ordered the...chicken with veggies and Spätzle, a type of pasta. IT was flavorful except the chicken. The chicken seemed a bit bland and perhaps could use some spice. The serving was big enough I couldn't finish it. I liked the armament and other decoration. The restaurant has photos of some of its celebrity visitors in the hallway including many movie stars and several US Presidents.. Service was excellent.More

We finally made it to the "famous" Mader's... what a disappointment it was! While we did not care about sitting in the bar, the overly-bright white lights in the chandeliers and the fluorescent side-light tubes gave a very negative vibe. Does Mader's not know that...better light bulbs are available now? With such a reputation for their style as much as their food, they should fix this. It shows a level of detail that is lacking. The wine selection was good, but the food... ! I've had better pretzels at my local mall. For a famous restaurant, the pretzel was an embarrassment..dry, bland, and lacking in any sort of tang (*they should know that real pretzels use food-grade lye to get that little "zing"). It tasted like something that one would microwave in a dorm room. The spaëtzle was also unappealing, with some weird green drizzle... my son tried it and would not eat more of it, and he is a very un-picky eater! This is a VERY traditional German specialty. Keep it simple and high-quality and not overloaded with gunk. We are German-American and know what German food should taste like (it's generally heavy and not highly spiced). For the price that Mader's charges, we expected a higher quality of food. Service was fine but not extraordinary (for example, seeing that we barely touched the spaëtzle, he could have offered us a substitution). We won't recommend this restaurant based on our recent experience.More

Finally got here after hearing about it for years. Sat at the bar for dinner. Schinzel was good, kraut is so-so. Spaten Oktoberfest had an excellent taste too. The bartender was a little slow, she could have served the crowd better. My strudel was a...little burnt on the bottom. All and all a decent meal, sort of expensive.More

Schnitzel was three small pieces of inedible "something" burned black around the edges. The red cabbage smelled and tasted like vinegar. It was the absolute worst dining experience we have ever had - sent everything back to the kitchen -- and they had the nerve...to expect us to pay 1/2 the cost of the plate for a meal we didn't eat.More

This place is amazing. From the history to the service. The food was delicious. Everyone that works there is so friendly and shared so much insight regarding the restaurant history. If you are in the area you must go and eat there.
