We had visited the area earlier in the year and were disappointed that we couldn't try the place since they don't have hours early in the week and are pretty limited on weekends. So this week, we made the point to drive the 160 miles from home to eat here and took 6 other people with us. We originally spotted the place from the highway side and thought the magical dragon theme garden and outdoor dining area looked amazing. The main entrance is actually on the main street and is as close to authentic Irish pub as it can be. Inside the perfectly clean interior, the soaring ceiling is impressive as is the back bar and the decorating in general. As in Ireland, small little areas are set up to make it easy for groups to sit and converse. We had made a reservation and there was another party of 12 that showed up, but generally traffic was light for a Friday night in fish fry crazy Wisconsin. The bartenders talked our (initially) reluctant friends into trying the "Irish Old Fashioned" made with whiskey instead of brandy. The orange and cherry were properly muddled and everybody that tried one, had another. Great selection of Irish whiskey, Guiness of course and local brews that were declared by others to be excellent. We are on the ummm...senior side...and they moved a couple of tables together for us since we thought we would have trouble sitting on the higher stools at a round table. We ordered an appetizer platter (loved the leprechaun legs) and a seafood, cheese and artichoke dip with garlic toast rounds. All excellent. A couple folks opted for the fish fry and were very pleased. Bangers and mash were a great hit as was the steak pie. I have a dietary restriction in the amount of food I can take in at one time and instead of telling me to order an appetizer as many places have, they made me a miniature version of the shepherds pie that was excellent. Another person ordered the full size one and it was enormous. Afterwards there were a few pieces of Irish cheesecake and a drink called a Celtic Kiss as well as a few Dead Rabbit whiskeys enjoyed. After trading a few Irish language phrases and blessings with the culture aware staff we departed satisfied and happy. They do serve americanized irish things (like corned beef) if you must have that, but the Irish flavors they serve are excellent.

A wonderful vintage pub for drinks and food. The current owner entertained us with the story of the transformation of The Monarch Public House and its longevity. He invited us to walk around the basement bar area, which is still a work in progress. Friendly female bartender also provided us with conversation about the area and nicely mixed cocktails. We did not eat, but the food being served looked very appetizing. A great place to stop on a warm summer afternoon.

Authentic Irish pub with dark woodwork and almost mysterious ambiance. What a great dinner! The “bubble and squeak” with corned beef was so delicious...impressive. When I asked for a “Moscow Mule”, our server suggested an “Irish Mule”....so glad she did. It was delightful. Not only high end restaurants get five stars in my book. Even very old places in funky little towns get High ratings from me. This place delivers on food and service, for sure. Don’t miss it if you’re driving through Fountain City!

Stoped in for dinner and were disapointed. We both had different items that were Irish Stew in some form. Both meals were bairly warm and sent back to reheat. They listed five tap beers but on my second beer they only had one beer left. not sure if there is a supply issue, but the other bar I went to had plenty of tap beers available.

Such a nice experience for the first time back out to a restaurant. Such beautiful upkeep for this historic bar. Friendly and helpful staff. The food was delicious and came out at the perfect time. The beer, Picnic, refreshing and great for the summer. The owner was so great with 6 year old niece; answering all her questions about the items in the bar; especially all the dragons. A must go!!!

This place is horrible! Reuben Sandwhich, not good! Shredded corned beef, had "old" taste to it. Fish & chips, if you can call it that! Very fishy taste & who knows what kind of batter they use. Was gross! As we were sitting at table in the dining area, you could start to see it get hazey, which was from the kitchen. They have NO ventulation! Walked out of there smelling like grease!! The establishment needs a make over and major cleaning, especially the bathrooms, disgusting! Let's just say they don't clean them!! Saturday night 6:30, very few patrons I can see why!

Beautiful old building with an Irish appeal. Was there for my birthday and had a blast! Behind the bar Katie interacted with us, was fun with a dry sense of humor. Can't wait for my next visit there.

Dark, dreay, deck was dirty and uncomfortable. The Rueben was just OK- was expecting better since this is an Irish Pub. My husband and fish and shrimp, both were undercooked. When their website says sit on 2nd floor deck and enjoy the river view. Nope- a view of the street. When we first walked in a musty moldy smell was evident. We should of walked out.

The proprietor was lovely, we felt right at home. Enjoyed the outdoor deck greatly. If you like trains and barges you can see partial view of both from the porch. We just had a beer and house made chips - both good. There was a sign outside that said “Open when gate open”,seems like sometimes they have expanded hours (we are here on Memorial Day.

Quaint Irish restaurant with both Irish and American food choices on the menu. Prices were reasonable. We were here with another couple and we all enjoyed our food. Seating was spaced out to maintain social distancing. Server wore her mask.

Great beer and cocktails, good food and awesome hospitality in this historic pub. We made friends right away with the owner who kept us entertained all night with stories from Ireland as well as the historical significance of the Monarch. He also poured a perfect pint of Guinness.

The staff was wonderful. They answered questions about wine (generous pours), allowed us to take pics in out of the norm places and we could order 1/2 orders on dinners. And the food was yummy!!!
