Don't let the bad reviews fool you! Check the dates. Yes there are a few recent bad reviews, but it seems that most of them are old. As in old enough to be from the previous restaurant that was in that location. Those really should...be taken down as this should only have reviews for Chef Rene's at the Inn and NOT the old Nicolet Grill!
We went for a Friday night fish fry. After having heard mixed reviews, I was honestly expecting an average fish fry. The price on the fish fry was average at $13.95 for all you can eat. It came with cole slaw, bread and choice of side. I kept it traditional and went with french fries. My husband had the smoked salmon with a salad and the wild rice as the side. We thought the salmon was a little pricey at $28.95, but both dishes were REALLY good! I could smell the smokiness of the salmon and it had a really good flavor (this coming from me, that doesn't much care for salmon). We did think that both the salad and the salmon portions were a tad on the small side for the price however. The wild rice had a good flavor, but was too overdone for my tastes, it lacked texture. The fish for the fish fry was pollack, and I am used to either cod or haddock. It was breaded and had a good flavor, but the pieces were small. Now, the piece size does not really matter for an all you can eat portion, but it did matter in that the fish was drier than it should have been. It wasn't bad, but the pieces were thin, and therefore were not the nice, moist and flakey fish I am accustomed to. The fries were good, though my personal preference is for a slightly thicker cut. I really liked the cole slaw. It was the creamy cole slaw that I prefer, but it had a distinct flavor. I couldn't place what the flavor was, but it was different than any other cole slaw I've had and I thought it was really good!
The service was very good. The young man that was our waiter was polite, but I thought he may have been new to the trade. His timing was pretty good, but service staff these days (almost anywhere) never seem to ask if their customer would like another drink. Do they know how much money they are missing out on by not asking? Also when he brought us our bill he said that since we did not get any dessert, he gave us a couple of extra mints. That was great, except that he hadn't even asked us if we would like any dessert. Another potential loss for the business.
I also have to mention the brandy old fashioned. Kudos to the bartender as this is the only place that I have heard my husband say how good it was, aside from our favorite place to go. It was both tasty and potent, while being affordably priced at $6.50.
I have read complaints about the ambiance and/or decor. Personally, I would prefer not to see all the taxidermy in a setting where the ceilings are not vaulted, but I am not going to let that stop me from enjoying good food! No it is not the same as his previous location, maybe not as upscale, but are you really going to let that stop you from enjoying a good meal?
Would not hesitate to go back again!More
