A local treasure we discovered while traveling through Beckley. Our waitress was upbeat and quick on a busy Saturday night. Their house salad was terrific and both of our entrees were fabulous. Definitely recommend the crab cakes.
We all had different dishes and tasted each others' entrees. So good. Wish we had The Char near us. Service was spot on. It was my husband's birthday and the waitress must have heard us make a toast to him because she brought a strawberry...cake with candle at the end of the meal without our asking for anything. Staff there pays attention.More
Our waitress was SUPERB! I can't remember her name, but she has worked there for 20 years and takes care of her mother. Our wait was about 20 minutes on a Monday evening. Service was excellent along with the food. Highly recommended.
Save your money and do not go here for any dining. Way overpriced for the service and food you’ll receive. The waitress was horrible. I appeared to be a bother we were there. Zero personality. But this person has been there 26 years. The food...was horrible. Served stale crackers in cellophane and no bread. “You’ll get bread when dinner is served”. The bread was cold and stale. Tasteless filets, and bottom fried crispy and very salty. Tasted like they used a tenderizer on a cheap cut of meat. The salad was hideous. Wilted lettuce, and what appeared to have canned diced tomatoes on top. The snap peas were a pile of stringy mush. The shrimp cocktail was served on a dish, the shrimp cocktail sauce was horrid, and the shrimp tasted like they have been sitting in a refrigerator for a couple of days. I doubt we’ll be back, ever.More
We loved everything about this place, starting with the fact it has been around for 50 plus years. A restaurant doesn’t survive that long unless it’s consistently good, and the Char seems like it is. The menu is classic American cuisine - steaks and seafood,...with some Italian dishes thrown in as well (I think the same owners also have the restaurant called Pasquale’s - we saw a billboard to that effect). We tried the salmon special and the king cut filet. My salmon was a nice thick filet with some sort of dry rub that was delicious. The meals come with a yummy salad (we had blue cheese crumbles on ours), a side dish and garlic bread. Mmmmmm. Shrimp chowder was great too. They have a very decent wine list. Service was terrific. Our waitress was in top of everything, and there was a busboy - I have never seen such a hardworking guy! They were setting up for large parties coming in later and he was breaking down and setting up tables at a rapid clip! We were just passing through Beckley, but if we lived closer, I’d be a regular at the Char!More
The Wife and I were in town on vacation and as a last night treat, we went to the CHAR. We were warned it was a higher Cost than say Outback. When we arrived we saw how out of the way it was near a...lake. As we approached the building. This kitchen staff person was on the phone. Cussing and yelling to who ever was on the phone. Kids were standing there and we had to tell the guy to stop.
Now onto the meal. The steak was good and it had the Char! ummm steak char. the salad had a red raspberry sauce. it was swimming in it. The bake Potato was good but the server wanted to put a Huge amount of sour cream on it. I had to tell her to hold back. The wife Chicken Parm was good and we both clean the plate. I would of nawed the bone if I could have. a 70.00 bill and we dont drink. Hey it vacation! I would go back.More
There is a lounge area to enjoy a cocktail before dinner. The bartender was very pleasant. We were seated by a window which afforded us a nice view of the lake. The dining room is spacious and the decor is comfortable but ordinary. Our server...was efficient and friendly. The brascioli was enjoyed by several in our party. They all loved it. The pork chop was also delicious. The salads were fresh and tasty. The crackers at the table were a hit. The bread pudding dessert was served hot as requested and was divine. The prices for the food and alcohol were fair and the portions were plentiful.More

Unfortunately, you see everything. I like to dress up just a bit when going to the Char. Dressy casual would be fine. It is a nice but relaxed atmosphere. Nice jeans with a dressy top and heels or a casual dress for the ladies and dress slacks with a golf shirt or dress shirt for the guys. Hope this helps.
