I was nearby and curious, while awaiting a rug being washed at a heavy duty laundry nearby.A long wait allowed me the dubious privilege of watching the chef call out audibles to his (hardworking and pleasant) team of what to say to call-ins "say we've...run out of rice. No wait, we have enough". Then watching the very casual effort to try to meet the growing pipeline of orders waiting and waiting and waiting. I'm not sure if having the (very efficient) counter person prep each meal on the self-service condiments table is what customers want to see...transparency is nice, but watching the staff's valiant efforts to prep each order with casual dipping into the self-serve teriyaki container was a bit disconcerting. Even the ultra-generous servings of chicken couldn't quite compensate for the visuals, the wait, and the lack of dressing on the salad.More

I came here for lunch and enjoyed my meal. The spicy chicken teriyaki and bbq pork were excellent. The staff were very friendly and prompt in their service.

I had lunch here and thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The Spicy Chicken Teriyaki was really good. It was a perfect quantity with a tender texture and the right amount of spice. This is a great place for teriyaki.

I had looked online to find this place. Its a hole in a wall but serves delicious food. I had the special chicken teriyaki. The lady at the counter is very friendly and I watched her chatting up with several customers. Seemed that she knew...them well and they were very happy with her service. My food came within a few minutes. I enjoyed my meal very much, will definitely be back!More

Close to my house and excellent food at a decent price. We usually get take-out, but it's a nice little place to eat in as well. The prices don't look cheap, but there is always enough from one order for two or three servings. I'm...allergic to rice, so I ask for double salad, which is basically just lettuce, but very fresh and crisp with a wonderful Japanese dressing. I do recommend you ask for extra teriaki sauce because it's excellent. When I suggest teriyaki for dinner to the family, I see four faces light up with big smiles. (And don't forget to get some sweet-and-sour, too.)More

Do not go here if you are looking for ambiance - this is a typical teriyaki stand. There's a lot of sketchy stuff around this building. The owner is known for being a sweetheart and the food is consistent. More of a lunch or take...out type spot. Prices are average: about $7 for chicken teriyaki, a bento box with chicken is about $11. Not my favourite - but solid if you're in the area.More

Best teriyaki around but never had anything I couldn't recommend and Jenny's great. Very friendly. Can't do enough for her customers.

Like the reviews say, Jenny makes the restaurant. She introduced herself and remembered our names throughout the meal. She is excited about her food and you can't help but catching the excitement. It was yummy (although I have to admit I did not get teriyaki)....The aesthetics of the place leave a bit to be desired but I'd go again if I were in the area.More

We were a group of 10, including 5 guests from Taiwan. We found Joy Teriyaki on a suggestion. What a wonderful place! Besides delicious food, and many of us had different dishes, the place is clean but the woman who runs the front, we suspect...the wife of the cook in back, was fantastic...one of the best waitress/server/manager I have ever seen, no matter how fancy the restaurant is. She learned the names of some at the table after only hearing the name once, one dropped a fork and she was instantly there with a replacement and only from the sound....she was in the back at the time. Always a smile and a kind word for everyone. One asked for more rice and she brought it out with a smiley face painted in teriyaki sauce. They even brought out complimentary egg rolls in honor of our visiting Taiwanese. Did I say the food was GREAT as well? Do not be put off by the outside appearance. It is at the end of a small strip mall with a funky grocery store at the end. However, the inside of Joy Teriyaki is clean but quite small...maybe 6 tables. This will become our new "go to" teriyaki place when we are in Tacoma....just fantastic!More

I was in Tacoma for a weekend seminar and one of the leaders had heard about this restaurant and that it was well recommended. It is located in Tacoma, Washington, fairly close to the campus of University of Puget Sound (where we were staying) on...Tacoma's north side. The restaurant is small and is part of a larger grocery building. Inside are a few tables. You place your order at the window and then take a seat. The food was brought out fairly quickly and was a very nice presentation. Portions are on the large size and prices are very reasonable. Most items are as noted on the menu, meaning some come with steamed rice and/or a small salad. The staff was very friendly and helpful in what to order. The restaurant does quite a bit of take-out. I would certainly return here if ever back in the area.More
