We stopped going to Alder Wood the year prior to covid, when a cook slipped half a turkey sandwich onto the plate of a committed vegan in our party. We had no special desire to see if the intervening years had buffed their rough and...careless edges, but our spring/summer project is to sample and critique the Olympic Peninsula's 21 most talked about restaurants. Our conception of Alder Wood is that it wishes to perform and be judged as a French village bistro, combining singular skill in the kitchen with special care for a clientele that includes numerous regulars. What is has achieved, however, is less bistro and more urban brasserie, with a commercial rather than an individualized feel. There are exceptions: their beet salad is a work of art, or magic, with its bits of sweet goat cheese and the addition of a viola blossom (or nasturtium in the summer) from the kitchen garden. In contrast, the watery, tastless borscht, with its dried onion skins and floating green plastic substance should never see the table of a serious restaurant. The little pizzas are hot and attractive, and tasty enough, but seem incapable of providing any hidden pleasures. My wife thought the steak small and rather routinely flavored, but found the overcooked fries refreshed by added bits of parmesan cheese. The on tap drinks were good the night of our visit, including a stout that meshed with the steak, and a local saffron infused cider that accented the pizza and served well for sipping as the meal wound down. We had scanned the desserts at the entrance and found them unexceptional, so we passed. The restaurant has charming decor and friendly service and must be considered above average.More

We enjoyed the food but the main reason I am writing this review is because we thought the staff were exceptional! Thank you for the wonderful service.

Out Bed and Breakfast host suggested this restaurant to us. We made the last minute reservation but glad we went. We were seated in the outside porch/garden. It is small but quaint setting. We ordered Root vegetable fritter and slow braised lamb. It was the...best lamb I have ever had. I would definitely go there again when we are in that area.More

We dine here whenever we visit Sequim and it never ever disappoints. Divine food, lovely atmosphere and the service is excellent. Yesterday evening we had no reservation so we arrived early and luckily we were seated in the garden patio, which was delightful. Our server...Libby may be the best server we have encountered anywhere. Another great dinner at Alder Wood!More

We felt awkward in this establishment from the moment we walked in. The servers seem to be trained in avoidance rather than observance. They literally look down and never observe a patron trying to get their attention. The menu needs lots of work. I ordered...the lamb dish and everything from the awful presentation, to the pairing of the worse sides were brought to my table. Firstly the lamb I was served was in a portion of 2 forkfuls in a tiny cast iron skillet with a plate and it was the hardest, driest and tasteless lamb I’ve ever tasted. It was clearly cooked days before and reheated in a pan. It was not edible, so I left it. The paella we ordered was disastrous. The presentation was not the slightest appetizing. The rice was so dry and clearly reheated, since you could notice how it was pan heated and crusted together. My daughter ate the 2 pieces of tiny shellfish and said something is wrong, the rice tastes sour. We complained and this frugal unaccommodating restaurant removed the dish from our table with no apologies, and deducted 1/2 yes 50% of the dish cost from our check.. what audacity! Never in my 60 years of dining out have I seen this happen. This place does not even deserve the one star. Its clearly run by someone who is absolutely 100% clueless about the food industry. So if you want last weeks sour food reheated, give them your money.. my family and I will never go back to this place. It officially ranks as the absolute worse place we have ever dined in America.More

Our group of 8 had a nice evening out back. They had - and needed - blankets and propane heaters. The menu has variety. Our group had salads and pizzas and fish dinners. Everyone seemed pleased with their choices. Service was slow. Prices were high,...but maybe not out of line for a nice dinner.More

We love to eat out at Alder Wood. It’s our choice for special occasions. Food dishes are gourmet & delicious, often unique. They emphasis locally grown in season produce.

We had been here before on a previous vacation, and loved their wood-fired pizza. We are ardent fans of great wood-fired pizza, and this place does not disappoint. They use quality ingredients on perfectly done wood-fire-crisp dough. For example, their pepperoni is Cremeinelli pepperoni, a...charcuterie-grade slice of smoky spice goodness. Other items on their menu looked so good we wished we had an extra vacation day to return to try some more items! Reservations recommended, a very popular place!More

This was our second visit. Both times we ate outside in the garden. We started with the tempura vegetable appetizer which was amazing. The calamari salad was next and equally delicious. The service was super friendly and helpful. They have a nice beer and wine...selection, but cocktails would be a nice addition. Don’t miss the carrot cake.More

Sometimes you go to write a review and you stop for a moment and wonder if you should because it will get so popular you can't get a table. This is one of those restaurants. Everything was so good. Wine was good. Entrees were excellent!...Mine came with a side I don't like and I tried it and liked it. That good. The dessert... the carrot cake was one of the best I've had. Service was great, food arrived timely. Couldn't find a thing to fault.More

This little gem was just steps from our Airbnb, and we managed to snag a reservation at the last minute. The setting is modest but comfortable; the food was really great. We started with the root vegetable fritters to share, then turned to the entrees:...a Sicilian pizza, porchetta, and steaks frites. Each was well prepared and nicely presented; the porchetta was beautifully seasoned, served with braised greens and mashed potatoes, the steak frites also accompanied by the greens and with wonderful cheese tarragon butter to complement the meat. The pizza was great, and large enough to provide lunch the following day. Service was wonderful; our server was knowledgeable and prompt, a pleasure to work with. The small wine selection was top-notch, heavily weighted towards PNW wines (some wonderful ones from the Willamette Valley). We're so glad we found this lovely little place, and highly recommend it.More

We had the grilled halibut and the pork. The halibut was a cedar plank. Cooked perfectly with wood fire potatoes and perfectly seasoned greens and vegetables. The pork was marinated served on mashed potatoes. Seasoned greens, onion straws. were delightful. We shared a salad with...a vinegar base and blue cheese crumble. We had the lemon pie desert and the bread they make is out of this world.More

Party of four and each of us was disappointed to learn that our meal had to be revised due to shortages. Our server came to our table repeatedly throughout the evening to tell us of each shortage; it appeared there was a significant lack of...communication. Great wine and we have enjoyed takeout pizza on a prior occasion, however this dinner was truly a letdown.More

Yes! Most of the dinner menu is gluten-free, just avoid the meatloaf and pasta carbonara. Everything from the fryer is GF. Lunch GF bread substitutions available. Dinner pizzas GF substitute as well.
