One of the many things I live about McMenamins (a pacific northwest company that you really need to just look up to understand) is that for the most part they are housed in historic properties that they lovingly restore and then give new life to....In the spar cafe you can enjoy excellent quality food and drink in a place unlike any other (including other MCMenamins properties). My only caveat is they have the single TV I have ever seen in a public room of a McMenamins property.More

We didn't eat here, as we'd had lunch in Centralia. But we walked in to check it out and have a quick beer. The waitress behind the bar was stellar - great personality, full of information about the area, and made us feel very welcome....Where does McMenamins continue to find such quality staff? We'll definitely go back for a meal next time we're in townMore

Had lunch with some old friends at McMenamins. I used to go there when it was the Spar and it was always good food. Now...not so much. The Cubano hamburger was very good but the fries were limp, soggy and cold. Come on, folks, fries...shouldn't be like noodles. The service was excellent but when I go to a restaurant I go to EAT. Trust me, I won't be going back.More

Food was average however the prices were high. Early in the day however felt like we were using a dinner menu. Example is the pizza, average tasting and a 16 in is around $36.

I should have known my the demeanor of our waitress (despite our efforts to be friendly and kind) that this was not going to be a great meal…Two ordered the seasonal special with chicken fingers and pickled slaw. One meal came with 3 fingers, the...other 4. Not a “meal” by any means. Two ordered salads with grilled chicken. Both appeared to be lunch size and were each $20. The only “good” meal was the cheeseburger and fries. I don’t mind paying for a good meal, but when the prices are high, the food is average, and the staff is rude, I’m not a happy camper! My advice, find another place to eat, unless you want to overpay for lackluster food and subpar service!!More

Passing through Olympia and ordered for delivery. 3 burgers, 1 pizza, Caesar Salad and fries. The food was flavorful and hot even after delivery time. The order was missing: Utensils, napkins and the sauce that is listed as included with the fries. Be sure to...remind with a note on your takeout or delivery order.More

Prepare to enter a time warp. This is a classic old cafe in downtown Olympia that was a historic hangout for the blue-collared workers, the lobbyists and the politicians. A versatile place for food and drink for all hours of the day and night. McMenamins...has given The Spar a new lease on life, but had left the place largely untouched-- including the clientele. Olympia is an interesting little community that time forgot. While having week end lunch there I spotted lots of families, retirees and hippies, but nary a hipster. Kind of a refreshing change. My daughter and I both had fish and chips that were very good. Not the usual McMenamins' soggy, gooey fish and chips from many of their establishments. Great tots and cole slaw, and of course local craft beer. A shared dessert topped off the lunch. I give it high marks as a friendly, reasonable hangout.More

McMenamins Spar Cafe is a hidden gem with an excellent beer list and better food. The location offers unique spaces to dine with friends plus includes a pool table, pinball machines and a shuffle board table for sporting participants.

Wow, all negative, pretty much. We entered the restaurant to a sign that says, "Please Seat Yourself". We headed over to a row of booths only to be told they were all reserved, but they had not had time to put out the "Reserved" signs....We then went towards the front of the restaurant and began taking a large booth only to be told that our party of 3 was not big enough for that booth. We then sat at the counter (not our preference) but we wanted to be near the front windows as the restaurant has very dim lighting. Our drinks arrived and the server literally didn't say a word. Just stared at us with the drinks in his hand, waiting for us to tell him who ordered what. (really bizarre) Regarding the food -- we requested no onions. Two dishes came with onions and had to be taken back. One of the pizza crusts was burned black. And, to add to the negative experience, the waitress charged regular price for the Happy Hour salad, ignored us when we called her attention to it, and rang up our bill. When we pointed it out again, she reluctantly took off 50 cents (it should have been a couple of dollars). The restaurant was very busy. People were waiting by the door. Service was without a hint of pleasantry or smile. We won't be back.More

Its been some time since I last visited this establishment and now disappointed with myself for having done so. I brought my family of four to Breakfast just over a week ago. The food and service was excellent. I only wish the environment out side...was complimentary to what we found inside, but that's another story. The menu was extensive and the four dishes ordered was very good.More

Second time here in a week and have to say it is really great! We ate at the bar with friends and all had good meals and wonderful wine. I recommend the pub steak at the bar for 20 bucks. Hard to beat!

A great place to go when you want to get a handle on Olympia. In the days before the freeway, the SPAR was on the main road traveled north or south. We stopped there often on a family trip. It wasn’t fancy but it was...always great food. Lots of great memories for breakfast, lunch or dinner!!More

I do not know if there is anything in particular on the menu but just ask them to make something special for you. These guys are usually very good about taking care of the customers.

The folks at Mcmenamins Spar are super helpful. I have a gluten intolerance and my wife can't eat soy and we do great at all the Mcmenamins including spar.
