This high-energy bistro took over as Williamsburg's best restaurant as soon as it opened in 2003. The sophisticated but relaxed dining room has an open kitchen, which uses fresh, local ingredients for its creative American fare. The dining bar and seasonal outdoor patio seating are on a first come basis. Reservations for the dining room are recommended and may be made up to 2 months in advance. Open daily for dinner, a hostess is available during the day to take reservations.

Every single thing was RAVE-WORTHY!!!! I had the short ribs my husband had a fish special. They weren’t just good they were special. The fettuccini appetizer was delish and so was the salad. We split both and was glad we did because they were a...good size. The dessert pineapple macadamia nut tart was like nothing I had ever tasted. The bill was almost 200 however we will still be talking about the meal in years to come and you get what you pay for. Waitstaff was helpful snd friendly.More

We were visiting Wmsburg for Labor Day weekend and made a reservation for 8:30. We are a family of 5, but my wife had inadvertently made the reservation for 4. It had been a long day, we were hungry and ready to eat dinner. We...arrived and my wife very nicely and almost apologetically told the hostess that there were actually 5 of us and would it be OK to add one to the reservation. The hostess made a grimace and shook her head no and said I'm sorry. And stared at us. No attempt to address it or solve the problem. I asked to sit outside, she said they weren't servicing tables outside (although there were 5 -6 tables of folks eating--plates, silverware, etc-- when we walked in?) Fairly awkward. My wife said to me what now, and I said no clue...after all it was 8:30, so getting in somewhere else seemed unlikely. The hostess sensing our frustration almost rolled her eyes and said she would check to see if it was OK and came back and said they could squeeze another in, but it would be tight, I think expecting us to decline and leave. We said OK and ate. Thing is, they could easily have "squeezed" another in seeing how it was a 12yo and the seating was a bench, so it was a non-issue from the beginning. (And once we were seated, it wasn't crowded at all.) Instead of seeing this and happily saying No problem!, smiling and making it happen, the hostess instead seemed put out and never once smiled or was even cordial. She completely missed the opportunity to be a hero. Once we sat, I sensed that the staff had been "warned" about us...they were slow to come to the table compared to our neighbors, and the waiter...though sufficiently polite...seemed robotic and aloof. I also noticed the table next to us received much warmer treatment. Keep in mind, we were never, ever rude or anything remotely close. I think they originally expected us to turn around and walk out, but since we stayed and expected to be seated (knowing it was a non-issue), I guess that made us "troublemakers', lol. Once seated , I almost felt like we were "in their way", although to be fair, maybe I was imagining that (though I don't think so...). I watched the rest of the staff throughout our visit, and the general vibe was everyone was slammed and therefore frowning, thinking being busy is a reason to be pissed? Anyway, our food was absolutely excellent. We ordered several apps beforehand which were great, everyone's entree was fantastic and the desserts were outstanding. Atmosphere is good too, cozy and warm, and though the staff seemed standoffish, it didn't spoil the evening. We had a great time, and tipped well over 20% (as usual...that's how these folks earn a living and they work hard, so although I thought their attitude needed improvement, the service itself was pretty good). As far as food, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. As I said, the food was outstanding. But I just don't understand when wait staff in any restaurant run around scowling on the verge of rudeness. I'm Southern, maybe I'm just used to more manners, lol? IMO, the hostess needs to be replaced or just find another job she likes. Note to wait staff: if you hate your job...do something else. I see "help wanted" signs all over the country, there's plenty of other things to do. To summarize: Food excellent, atmosphere pretty cool, service decent but not friendly.More

Husband and I had reservations for 7 PM. We were seated promptly upon arriving right at 7. Restaurant was fairly full, with few tables available. Menu was varied with wide variety of choices; 2 fowl, 1 pork, 2 beef, 2 seafood, salads and wide variety...of appetizers. The daily special was halibut with mashed potatoes, corn, and some sort of relish. We both ordered that, and it was delicious! Very healthy portions, I couldn’t finish mine, and husband was too stuffed for dessert. Husband had a specialty beer, which was very good. Waiter was quick and attentive without being intrusive. Only complaint was the table next to us-they were a larger group that was very loud and disruptive, and a bit inconsiderate of wait staff, but this was not the restaurant’s fault. We were happy when they finished and left. There’s nothing to think about if considering this restaurant! Just go!More

By far the beat restaurant in Williamsburg. The foie gras was to die for. I also had the rabbit fricasse and it was delish. Wine list was extensive and reasonably priced. Enjoyed my Rombauer Chardonnay. Highly recommend this restaurant. Service was impeccable.

It was late one evening and my wife and I just happened to stop by Fat Canary to see if we could get a reservation. The host indicated they were all full for the rest of the night but we could try getting a table...at the additional space downstairs in the basement area. We checked with the hostess for that area and after a short wait she was able to get up a table. The place was full but a waiter took our orders and afer maybe 30-40 minutes brought out our food selections. We both ordered wine and both selections were excellent. My wife had a bbq rib entree with salad and I ordered braised lamb. Both tasted excellent. We shared out entrees and enjoyed every bite. I didn't expect to get a table that night, but never-the-less we did get to enjoy excellent meals. I think both area are connected and food prepared by FC kitchens. All I know is we are thankful we were able to experience Fat Canary during our trip. Highly recommend!!!More

Although the restaurant is really intended for Couples and older adults, not kid friendly they were more than happy to accomodate my very picky eater daughter and she loved it. It was a great way to end our trip to Williamsburg.

I would love it if the Fat Canary remained our little Williamsburg secret because it is so awesome. Great drinks, great menu, great service. Fat Canary is our go-to place for a great meal . . . but plan ahead - getting a table is...typically a challenge if you don't plan ahead.More

From the moment we stepped into the doorway of The Fat Canary until leaving a couple hours later — we had the most perfect evening. Our server, Louis, was friendly, attentive and made our experience even better. It was my husbands birthday and the first...special surprise: the menu was printed with his name and happy birthday signed by the entire staff! The drinks were awesome. — I had the best Lemon Martini and my husband raved about the Veuve Carre (similar to a Manhattan). The food was incredible —- every single item was prepared with special care. We were also impressed with how well the staff worked together. They clearly respect each other and ensure everyone has a good experience.More

Without a doubt, Fat Canary is our favorite restaurant in Williamsburg. I initially wrote a review in 2017 after enjoying a wonderful anniversary dinner. As a result of that experience, we have celebrated every anniversary, and other occasions at the Fat Canary. Our 2021 anniversary...was another wonderful evening; attentive wait staff, a relaxed atmosphere, and delicious food. When company comes to town, this is the "go to" spot for an excellent meal.More

We get to Williamsburg every couple of years and have made this a must-go to stop. They just keep getting better. Case in point. Tonight after making a big deal about how I like my Filet. "Walk it by the Stove", "Just Shot", "Blue", Very...Rare. It arrived Medium Rare at best. I just showed the doneness to our waiter Louis. (Who did an excellent job I might add). I did not make a big deal about it because the meat was of excellent quality, just not done to my specifications. They comped the steak from our bill. This was more than expected but very appreciated. This place is not inexpensive but it keeps living up to its billing and more. All of the other orders surpassed all expectations. They always treat our Granddaughter like a princess.More

Fat Canary is an exceptional restaurant - and will offer you a variety of options. Anything you select will meet the highest standards. It is not a steakhouse - I’m in Bangalore and jet lagged. My last response was confusing. More

That's odd, I have been to Fat Canary 3 times and each time our special occasion was recognized.
