This was a quick place to pick up snacks and beverages on our recent stroll through colonial Williamsburg. They had seating outside so we could enjoy beers and wine at very reasonable prices. Be careful of the cheese plate prices they are small, tasty but quite pricey. The other prices were family friendly. You could order sandwiches from your phone and get a time to pick them up. Ours took about an hour.

Like many other spots around colonial Williamsburg The Cheese Shop is NOT open every day of the week so check online and even call ahead. We stopped in around 5pm on a Tuesday evening. We walked around the Marketplace shops, pulled up a table outside and took turns going in to order. If you want a sandwich you march all the way to the back of the shop and order off the menu. Pick your combination of meat, cheese, and bread and they give you a ticket and a basket. While you wait you can shop or add chips and drinks (from the cooler). There was little wait on this particular Tuesday so we got our meals and quickly checked out. TIP - One side of the registers doesn't take cash and they are very strict about it. Eating outside was a real treat. We even got to talk to one of the employees who told us stories about the local college kids coming over to buy all sorts of food. The sandwiches were high quality and reasonably priced for what we got. I'm not sure how gourmet the cheese is, but we would definitely return for the sandwiches.

Cannot choose poorly! Sure you may wait in line for a few minutes but they're really very quick so send one person outside to stalk a table (which they're sanitizing between customers) while waiting, and order anything you love. Choose their "secret Sauce" on your sandwich because it's really good. So much yum on these sandwiches. We just loved it!

My family has gotten sandwiches from here for as long as I can remember. Whenever any family members come in to town to visit, one of their first requests is to make an order here for lunch (if they didn't already stop here for lunch before arriving.) The food is excellent (in particular the house dressing), and there is quite a lot of variety for sandwiches to order. It can get crowded at peak times, however, so you should definitely consider calling in or using their website to order before you arrive, so all you have to do once you get there is walk to the back to pay for your food. Seating is fairly limited inside, there are also tables out front and along the side of the building available to eat at. There are also a decent variety of snacks and cooking supplies available to purchase, and they do also sell cheese, if you're interested. Overall, a great lunch spot for sandwiches, that has become a family classic.

We had heard it was a great sandwich shop so we waited in the extremely long lines in their beautiful shop. The menu is huge but all 5 of us were very unimpressed with the food. While it seemed fresh it was truly the most disappointing meal I've eaten. Just a blah sandwich that was like a snack and not a meal. Very pricey for what we actual received. Now if you want great Sandwich Shops go to Bar Harbor Maine they know how to make their customers happy and full. I feel bad saying this because The Cheese Shop was so beautiful. . Fun to walk around in.

The cheese shop is somewhere we always visit while in Williamsburg. They have a great selection of international food products and other interesting grocery items you can’t find other places. Their sandwiches and good as well. I enjoy their chicken salad and the Virginia ham. Their house dressing is so good on anything and it available for purchase!! Their cheese selection is amazing also. We usually get 2 or 3 cheeses, some bread, and some house dressing and have an amazing little lunch. They have a wide variety of cheeses and are always happy to give you samples or walk you through the huge variety of cheeses they have.

Wow! From the line there all day long you would think this was the best spot to eat here in Merchant Square. We decided to just order online and take it back to our room. Maybe you get larger sandwiches if you eat there? These sandwiches were small and the filling didn’t even go to the edge of the bread. My husband got the egg salad. He said it really was not good. I got the chicken salad which was quite good. I got the house dressing on the side and dipped my pretzels I already had into it to help fill myself up because the sandwich alone wouldn’t cut it. The only thing we bought that was worth the cost was the sour pickle. We really could have split one they were so big. Very overpriced for the sandwiches there and for what you get.

This was the worst sandwich shop we have been to. They are severely understaffed and cannot keep up with inside/online orders. The interior is packed wall to wall with people and just to order a sandwich the line was 40 minutes long. We decided to try ordering online as suggested by the workers. Ordering online was another 40 minute wait, but we went ahead and used the online service. When I went to pick the food up at the time I was given I waited in line for 30 minutes only to be told online orders were picked up on the outside in the back of the store. I went out back and gave my name. The gentleman told me my order would be at least another 20-25 min! I waited another 30 min and finally asked for a refund. When he went to ask the manager she came out and very rudely said my order was next even though there were still two more orders ahead of me! We sat down to eat our food and all of our sandwiches were made wrong! My son’s grilled cheese sandwich tasted like it had been sitting on the counter for at least 20 minutes. It was not even warm. When we went back to explain what had happened the lady would only refund two sandwiches and she was very rude about it! Later that evening everyone who ate at that sandwich shop got very sick. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

It was a bit confusing at first, but we figured it out. Deli-style sandwiches and self-serve drinks were tasty and we had a nice day to sit outside and enjoy.
Prices were reasonable with daily lunch specials

My husband, another couple, and I stopped here for lunch on Tuesday, May 31 as we were looking for good food. I wasn't certain we would find what we needed to satisfy the diabetic and non-carb requirements among us. Despite their sandwich shop being closed, likely again because of staffing shortages, we were able to find wonderful food. Both couples ordered custom cheese boards and we also found tuna salad, ham salad, cole slaw, and egg salad. All were delicious. We topped that with local draft beers and the meal was complete.
After lunch we stopped downstairs in the wine cellar where we found a great selection and bought a lovely, reasonably priced bottle of Italy red.
Although we did not partake, we loved the assortment of interesting foods such as organic balsamic vinegar and other delights. Great shop!

Ok so first i saw the ad on the tv travel channel. But then we stumbled upon the place after a day in historic Williamsburg. Thank you food angels for looking out, it was all amazing, the chicken salad was so tasty, and we found a peanut butter bar dessert with oats that was mouth watering! Staff =5 stars on 10/23! Esp after eating inside and watching two mean mouthy customers tell off the cashiers (just bad eggs of people). They didn’t flinch, smiled, and took care of those not so nice humans! Great place, great staff, wish i had you where i live!

We went straight to cheese counter and ordered the cheese plate, and they also had meats you could add, plus bread and artisan crackers. It was so good, with a nice variety of flavors. This was a perfect snack w my college aged kids, just hanging outside in 70 weather, a great afternoon.

We bought a couple different cheeses and a rosemary bread loaf to bring home. All were excellent.
We were with kids that were getting tired otherwise I would loved to have also grabbed wine and sat and enjoyed the cheese there. The person helping was very friendly and knowledgable about the different cheeses.

These are not your traditional deli sandwiches - just look at the menu (though you can get a PBJ for the kids). On a busy day touring CW is is easy to order on line for pick up and grab a table anywhere to enjoy. They are famous for their house dressing and it is well deserved.

Our group of 10 rolled through for a quick lunch. Our timing seemed impeccable because the outdoor seating was very busy when we went inside but the line was short and after we got through the line it was out the door again. We ordered a variety of sandwiches and heard no complaints. My 8 year old loved the PB&J and even commented on how she loved the bread. We really loved all the drink selections in the coolers and from the soda fountain. I ordered the prosciutto and cheese with house dressing and thought it was great. They said it was one of the more popular choices. I recommend trying the House Dressing for sure. Will definitely return. It is a short walk from the heart of Colonial Williamsburg or easy access from the Merchants Square parking.
