Drawing influences from every corner of the former British Empire, the cuisine at James Shield’s Tavern offers an authentic taste of the cosmopolitan nature of the Colonies in the 18th century. Enjoy sugar, molasses, and rum from the West Indies. Sip wines from Portugal, coffee from Africa, and tea from Asia. Savor unique spice blends from around the world, and sample colonial favorites such as black eye pea soup, butter chicken, and West African stew.

I dined here twice during my stay. The first was on Christmas Eve, when the Tavern featured Mrs. Shield's Yuletide Supper. Because the tavern was very busy that night, service was not as good as I expected. As part of the special menu for that...More

If you want to eat in a basement - even though authentic - and be told you got “tavern fries” with your sandwich - and get extruded, reconstituted mushy potato strips instead . . . and a waitress who made no attempt to rectify the...More

Out of all the taverns, I think we got the last reservation at a decent time for dinner. (Make sure you reserve. dining anywhere a couple weeks in advanced). Great dinner, great service, and music. A must try! I got the chicken dinner and it...More

Third trip to Colonial Williamsburg in four years. Everyone I spoke with told me you MUST have lunch at Shields Tavern. Once the restaurant fills up they won't let any more in for lunch. I got there 1 1/2 hours early. First in line. Donna...More
