Although it is tucked away in a strip shopping center, upon entry to Waypoint you immediately get the impression that you will have a 5-star dining experience. Once we saw the menu, we were even more certain it would be that way. Unfortunately, we were...disappointed for several reasons.
For appetizers my wife and I ordered two different bruschetta options: Smoked Trout/Celery Root/Roasted Pepper and Brie/Apple/Arugula/Chipotle-Cinnamon. The bread was appropriately grilled, and each bruschetta option comes with three pieces, so we were both able to taste each option. In summary, the Smoked Trout was more flavorful, and the Brie was more refreshing. They were both good, so one should choose based upon whether they want a flavorful dish or a refreshing dish.
For entrees my wife chose the Chef's Special Stuffed Flounder, and I chose their Faroe Island Salmon. My wife said that the stuffed flounder was very good. Regarding my salmon dish, I thought the salmon itself was excellent - flavorful and a perfect medium rare. My problem with the dish was the accompanying grilled endive. It was incredibly bitter. There are a number of cooking techniques to reduce significantly the natural bitterness of endive; those techniques need to be applied here.
So, from the food perspective, we would average out the dishes to a 4-star rating. The service was a different matter.
Our server came to take our order just minutes after we were seated. When we told him that we needed more time to read the menu, it was probably 10-15 minutes before he returned, and it did not appear that he was terribly busy serving other tables.
The complimentary bread and butter were not brought to the table until AFTER we had finished our appetizers. We noticed the same was true for a table near us. Both parties sat for a significant period with nothing to eat with our cocktails or wine.
Our server never refilled our water glasses - never the entire night, and they were empty. Our server never poured additional wine in our wine glasses. While we are perfectly capable of pouring our own wine, an upscale restaurant like this one is trying to be should endeavor to keep their customers' wine glasses half-filled.
A 2-star service rating with a 4-star food rating leads me to an overall 3-star rating. I hope that this feedback will help them see easy opportunities for improvement, so that future patrons will have a better dining experience.More
