Great First Impression My family made our first visit to Shorty’s Diner this past Thursday. We’ve been home shopping in the area and doing our breakfast-spot research at the same time. Shorty’s was our 3rd example of what Williamsburg offers as far as breakfast spots...go. You can search for my review of another visit in the area and avoid a terrible mistake that I’ll forever regret. My first impression was how busy it was for a Thursday morning. The place was full, but we didn’t have to wait for a table either. Second, I could tell that it was locals and regulars that filled the place. That’s a good sign. We were taken to a clean table by a friendly waitress and our drink order was taken. The menu was full of all the standard Southern breakfast items anybody would expect to see. The prices were all very reasonable. Especially considering that Williamsburg is somewhat of a tourist town full of Pancake House type restaurants overcharging for subpar food. We ordered food when our fresh brewed sweet tea was delivered, then I relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings a short while until our food arrived. The interior is decorated nice with a nod given to a 50’s style diner. I’ve been in a few of these places that go way overboard with the theme. I think Shorty’s did a good job paying tribute to a simpler time gone by without hitting you over the head with it. The music playing at low volume in the background was authentic to the decade. Our food arrived a few plates at a time. If I wanted to be critical, I would complain how much this bothers me, but this isn’t fine dining. Besides that, I was too pleased with the food placed before us to nit-pick. Anybody can make pancakes the size of hubcaps like Shorty’s does but it takes a quality batter and a skilled cook to turn them out 3/4“ thick and fluffy. The French toast was golden brown and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The table also had bacon, eggs and a veggie omelet. We were all lost in enjoyment when a passer-by asked how the food was. At first, I figured it was a friendly fellow eater but then suspected that it might be the owner, so I asked. Sure enough… the owner cares enough about his product that he’s out there on the floor walking around greeting customers and asking for feedback. I love what you’re doing there Shorty. I’m looking forward to my next visit.More

They were super busy but moved people through quickly. That’s why I was surprised that my meal was barely warm. The home fries were mushy. We won’t be back.

Went because who doesnt love a retro diner? Greeted by statue of Elvis. I dont eat big breakfasts often and NEVER 2 days in a row. I did this time. First time I got there after the rush and was served by Olivia? Went for...chicken fried steak and gravy. It was exactly what I wanted and envision the dish to be. It wasnt busy so was in and out in about 25 minutes. Next day; got there full parking loot with line out both doors. So I put my big boy pants on and realized I was in for a long wait and was going to be there for a while. No biggie I was on vacation. I was seated by the lady that I guess is the manager? she recognized my from day before and sat me right away. Ordered the Western omelet and as expected it took a while. But when it arrived it was hot and fresh. Hash browns are just the way I think hash browns should be. Go there for breakfast and you will be happy. The prices make you feel like the owner is giving food away.More

It was bad. Presentation of food was bad. I asked for my eggs over medium. The white part was not cooked all the way, the yolks, no where near medium. I took a few bites, I was done. The potatoes, greasy and mushy. The underside...of the toast was burnt The only thing that was good was the bacon. As another reviewer pointed out- everything was sticky. We were there first thing in the morning ~6:00am. The maple syrup bottle was sticky, along with the salt and pepper, and even the holder they were all in—all stick. We won’t be returning. Megan, our server was excellent.More

We are regulars to Williamsburg and the breakfast at most hotels/motels are far from satisfying. If you want a great breakfast at a reasonable price go to Shortys. Variety is great and the Shortys Special is perfect. Three eggs, breakfast meat, fried potatoes and toast...for $7 and change. Life is short, enjoy everyday!!!!More

Good food, nice portions. I loved the homemade sausage and the scrambled eggs were fresh real eggs—no powdered stuff. Biscuit was good. I only wished they had turkey sausage because my husband prefers it. Grits were creamy and seasoned perfectly!

Fast service with small portions are the truth. I ordered the breakfast sampler on 7/29/2021 at 11:30 am. It was $12.99, no quibble with the price . It was supposed to come with 2 eggs. Mine order came with less than 1scramble egg. Instead of...2 pieces of bacon I got 1 piece and a broken piece. I asked for extra butter for the pancake when I ordered I didn't get it because the waitress didn't bring out the food. I waited for her to finally come over and reordered the butter. No amount of butter or syrup could save the pancake. It was a large pancake that tasted awful. My son ordered the blueberry pancakes. Same nasty buckwheat mixture with a dab of a blueberry concoction and tiny whip cream surrounding it on top. Needless to say we won't be going back to the Broad Street location.More
