Best pizza around

We've been going to New York Deli for years! Stopped by today for lunch and had a delicious pizza. Always made to order, the sauce is great and the pepperoni has just a hint of spice. Several people who walked by our table with equally delicious looking subs, said "Awe we should have ordered a pizza"!

Decent enough...

We stopped in here one Sunday afternoon, and had a decent enough meal. The facility was fairly clean (though many tables needed bussing), with a bustling urban deli/diner ambiance. One orders at the front counter (the line can get long at times), finds seating, and picks up their order once their number is called. We had the Reuben and gyros sandwiches; not the best we've had of either, but fair enough selections overall. We ordered the carrot and chocolate cakes for take-out; and found both to be quite tasty, later that evening. All and all, a decent option, if one has a taste for urban deli offerings.

Quick Stop for lunch

Stopped for lunch on our way home form Williamsburg. Always a good place. Staff worked well with spacing limitations and wearing masks and keeping patrons separated. Food takes a little while but it is not fast food. Portions are large and the food is good quality. I am a big eater and the sandwich and onion rings filled me up. We stop here everytime we are in the tidewater area.

Good Diner, True to NY Roots

This is a good diner, but without table service. Orders are placed at the counter by the kitchen and your number is called for pick-up. Half of the menu consists of hot and cold subs/sandwiches, and the other half covers salads, pizza, specialty subs, and Italian dinners. Sandwiches are piled high with meat. The Manhattan Treat (a Monte Christo with turkey instead of beef) needs two hands to hold, and it can get a bit messy. The Chandler (a BLT augmented with roast beef and bacon) - ditto.

This review is more about their service or efficiency than the food. For this style of restaurant (you order at a counter and then pick up your food when your number is called; or you phone in your order and come pay and pick up your order) the food is good. My "beef" is that I called at 4:45 pm on a recent Friday to inquire as to what time I should call in an order for a cheeseburger and French fries to be picked up at 6:15pm and was told they could take the order and have it ready by 6:15pm. I arrived there at 6:00pm and stood in line and paid for the order. (There is a separate counter for orders that are called in as opposed to walk-ins) Then I stood there and watched as other people came and paid and picked up their order and left. One elderly man said he had called in his order 20 minutes ago and I informed him that he could pay for his order and they would call his name when his order was ready. Well, a few minutes later, he left with his order. At a little after 6:30pm, I heard my name called with my order from back behind the regular counter so I went to pick it up and mentioned that I had been waiting for half an hour and was told that they were busy, not, "sorry for the wait" but a brisk, "we're busy". This review is more to let potential customers know that they may want to go there and place an order rather than call it in as the staff seems to be a bit overwhelmed and curt due to so many phone in orders.

Stick to the Sandwiches

I had a cold New York sub. It was delicious and huge! I easily made two meals of it. Unfortunately, I also bought what appeared to be a delicious piece of raspberry cake from the cold case. Both the cake and icing were hard as a rock and seemed to be quite a few days old. I threw it out after taking a bite. What a shame. I wasted $7.00 on a dessert that should never have been sold had the restaurant quality checked their product.

Staff Not Wear Masks Correctly

Went to NY Deli for a late lunch. A notice is posted on the door indicating all customers and staff must wear masks. About a third of the staff wearing masks had them just over their mouths and not over their noses. One of these staff members was working the carry-out counter. The other staff without correct mask use were preparing the food. When I brought this to the attention of the manager, she said that she had repeatedly reminded the staff of the requirement to wear their masks correctly. Made me wonder what other health requirements are lax.

Delicious Food

Six of us had take out and everyone was very satisfied with their food. The home made chicken rice soup hit the spot. I has pastrami on rye and they must have had over one pound of great tasty meat on the sandwich. Even with the virus around and no inside seating they had 13 workers and all were busy. The parking lot was full with cars for take out.

Messed up order, waited forever, nasty

They gave two people the same number, called our number but wasn't our food, waited another half hour, burger was totally cold, sub not made as ordered, fries and onion rings not same as they were before. Onion rings not battered, they are crackly and crisp. Fries are dry, cold. $30 for two sandwiches, fries and onion rings that got left on the table. Wasn't worth trying to take it back to counter, they'd already argued with us after giving us wrong order the first place. Poor guy whose order we were handed first also had to wait another half hour for them to remake his food. Will not patronize again.

So glad we stopped by!

Found this place while leaving our vacation in Williamsburg and needed something family friendly. They have a broad menu and we found it easy for everyone to find something they wanted, Staff was friendly and everyone in there seemed to be working their butts off getting orders filled. Food came up quickly, we had subs, gyros, cheeseburgers and chicken parmesan and all were excellent and portion sizes were large. We'll definitely stop in again next time we're down this way.

Take Out

Went to the New York Deli for take out. Ordered a cold corned beef on rye with coleslaw a russian dressing, a slice of plain cheese cake and a greek salad with greek dressing. What we received instead was corned beef on rye with lettuce, tomatoe, cheese and mustard. Cole slaw and russian dressing on the side. NO cheese cake and oil and vinegar instead of greek dressing. Live 30 minutes away, so no way could we return this hot mess to them. Way to ruin dinner, guys.

we stop in here every time we go to Williamsburg. the sandwiches are so big we usually share. love the reuben and the philly cheese steak. (and the carrot cake and cheese cake) judging from the crowds, lots of folks in Williamsburg must like it too.

Good food is the reason to go!

Great pizza and corned beef sandwiches. This place is fun. The atmosphere is uninteresting, but go for the food. AYou go up to the counter to order, and when your meal is ready, they call your number. The Apollo Treat sandwich was very tasty though the rye bread was overly toasted. The pizza was especially good, and the glass of Cabernet wine was enjoyable. The staff members are pleasant. The restaurant has lots of patrons lined up, and its popularity is clearly warranted. Prices are slightly above average, but when a restaurant serves good food, folks will come!

We have visited the store several times now and to be honest we're done. Today after a bit of a tussle with the ever so friendly counter worker, I got orders set for my wife and I. I thought I would try a gyro and the "Greek" salad combo. To call this a gyro is a long stretch of the imagination. It was a pita with a bunch of iceberg lettuce, some extremely mealy tomatoes and slices of pre-cooked gyro meat covered in a white lumpy nasty sauce. I scraped the sauce off and ate the meat. The "Greek" salad was similar, a pile of iceberg lettuce with some other ingredients including more of the mealy tomatoes. Greek is parenthesized because I never even saw, much less ate, iceberg lettuce when I was in Greece. All this was entirely forgettable. On all honesty, we're not going back and can no longer recommend this place.

The Best! Highly Recommended!

Absolutely the best! Food, service and prices! We love this restaurant and visited several times on our Williamsburg/Virginia Beach vacation. Food was fresh with over-sized portions. Always busy. You can't go wrong with what you order. We had many sandwiches and tried the pizza as well. All the Staff is friendly and professional. The take-out is as busy as dining in line. The Best! Highly Recommended!
