A lot working against it....mall location, small. The food was first rate, portions were large and reasonably priced. The waiter (owner) was gracious, and helpful. The menu is large, and I am guessing can be adjusted. My wife had #27 Vietnamese crepes which she found...to be excellent. Spring rolls were very hot and not dripping in grease. My bun was very good with enough left to take home. When we packed up to go the owner came by with more dipping sauce and suggestions on how to heat it up and how to eat the rest. Very worthwhile experience.More

I first came to Saigon 1 about twenty years ago. The ambience was nothing fancy but the restaurant was clean and the food was really good. I loved the pho and my wife enjoyed the quail. We visited again recently. Quail is no longer on...the menu but there are many appetizers, soups, rice and noodle entrees to choose from and we had a great meal. The broth of the pho was sublime and service was exceptionally attentive and friendly. If I lived closer, I would be a regular customer.More

I had heard that this was an excellent Vietnamese restaurant and I went for an early lunch on my day off. The fried rice was excellent and a very reasonable price. Spring rolls were good, they are the steamed rather than fried variety and are...not what most are used to. Pho is excellent. Unassuming strip mall with many great restaurants.More

Recently went here during a visit to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. This was the second time I ate hear, and still was underwhelmed with the for I received. Figured out why the same dish I get in Richmond tasted better then the dish I get...here. I ordered the grilled beef with vermicelli (rice noodles). At this restaurant, whom ever is cooking just got heavy handled by over grilling the beef. It left it a bit charred and too dry. Not sure if it was the cut of beef or marinate sauce they use, but just no taste. Also I think to make up for the over grilling they added too much mint leaves to the dish. Overall not too bad, just not many customers, both time I have been there. So not sure if this is a sign that the food is so-so or what.More

We enjoyed the lunch food and the prices, but my wife and son were put off by the lack of cleanliness and general dumpiness.

I was in the area and wanted to try a bowl of Pho. It was an okay bowl, but I'm not familiar with a sweet broth but one with more anise. The noodles seemed to be more dense than what I've previously had. The decor...is simple and the prices are very reasonable. I will return but not for Pho but the menu is quite expansive! The place was not busy and there was one guy as waiter and cashier.More

While on our way to the Outer Banks we were looking for some good but fairly fast food. We stopped in a nondescript small restaurant in a small strip mall right off the highway. We ordered several dishes as well as spring rolls. The food...was served promptly and tasted great. A very good choice on our journey to the coast.More

While staying in Virginia Beach we kind of got fed up with the American "cuisine" so we decided to look out for a Vietnamees restaurant because we like the Vietnamees kitchen. The Saigon restaurant doesn't have much appeal both on the outside and the inside,...but the food is real Vietnamees, fresh, tasty, plenty to choose from. It's like being back in Ho-Chi-Min city. Finally we tried the coffee, because this is a special treat. It was heavenly!More

I ordered chicken noodle soup because I was feeling ill and wanted something hot to eat. I also ordered extra japalenos for the soup. I ordered a large portion. The soup was very flavorful and piping hot when it arrived at the table. the chicken...was not over cooked, but tasted like it has been steamed and not cooked in the both it was served in. Overall, it was very good, and was WAY more than I could eat.More

Pho is my soul food! I stopped in twice this week for carryout. The broth was packed separately in the traditional container as I would expect. The sides for the vegetable pho were in a separate container and included broccoli, cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, mushrooms,...lime wedges, and of course rice noodles. (I think I recounted all ingredients!) When I order vegetable pho, I prefer to stick with the traditional beef broth and this is what I ordered. However, they do offer the option of vegetable broth if one prefers. It's vegetarian but I didn't ask whether it's vegan. I did not phone in the order in advance but did not have to wait long for the package to be assembled. Friendly service!More

We had lunch here during our vacation in Va Beach. The pho was great although I wish it had more veggies. All they put in it are bean sprouts. However the appetizer wasn't the best. It was a sampler platter of an spring roll and...a couple different kinds of shrimp rolls. The rice paper was very sticky and slimy almost like they made it and let it sit in the frig all day. Also they have can drinks and charge $1.25 per drink unless you get water. It's not a place to cool off. It's very small and no a/c other than that the pho is worth tryingMore

The wife and I visited here for our forth time since my first review. We have only been for lunches, never dinners yet. We think it is good that we see folks of Vietnamese decent come in to eat here which tells us it must...be good. We still like this place for the Pho' when we're in the mood for noodle soup. Always fast service and great food. The wife had her standard Pho' soup this time around. I was going to try the Chicken Pho' but ventured off the Pho to try the lunch combination. I had the Won Ton soup, a spring roll, vermicelli and the Vietnamese Chicken Curry. The Pho was great as always and I really enjoyed the Curry. It was not a spicy as I thought it would be but I had never had it before and did not really know what to expect. Pho is the only Vietnamese food I have ever had until now. As I said, any time we want Pho, this is our place to go. I recommend here to anyone who enjoys Pho' soupsMore

Here in VA beach for short visit. Not too impressed with the food here, they are quite busy with customers, but the food is not very authentic or good. The guy doesn't know how to make crepe (banh xeo), he made the crepe and then...dumped the cooked meat (made for hot noodle soup) and cooked shrimp in with the bean sprouts. The crepe also lacks few key ingredients. Wrong way to do it buddy!More

Ready to enjoy an exceptional Vietnamese tasting adventure? Saigon #1 is the destination that should be in your GPS! The building is nondescript, but, inside, the food definitely is not! The atmosphere is low-key, subdued, with some visual cultural highlights. My husband couldn't wait to...order the pho dac biet (sorry-my old keyboard won't type the circumflex over the o) and because it was so delicious for him, there was little conversation for a awhile. For me, the lemongrass chicken was plentiful and smoothly delectable. The iced tea that they offer is jasmine (sweet or unsweetened) which was refreshingly different and fragrant from regular iced tea. The serving personnel seemed a bit reticent but very efficient. The prices are reasonable and an ideal place for a stress-free lunch or quiet dinner. Do go and have 'pho-un' choosing your meal and savor the flavor of your choice. You will want to come again, I'm sure.More
