Bernards is in downtown Roanoke so be prepared to hunt for a parking spot. We were there for lunch and got lucky and found a spot a block away. Being December, the restaurant had a pretty Christmas tree all decorated as you walked in. They also had decorations throughout the restaurant so it was festive. It is a small space in the front area and was kinda noisy between people chattering and clattering from the open kitchen. We were greeted after a minute and advised to pick whatever table we wanted. After a couple of minutes (and beginning to wonder if anyone saw us), our waiter arrived. We asked for a wine list which he promptly retrieved. Wine is available by the glass and bottle but the list is limited and pricey. One of us ordered a glass of cabernet sauvignon without realizing there were two choices. The waiter didn’t ask, and, of course, brought the more expensive one. We ordered the fish and chips, corned beef sandwich and cheeseburger. I really wanted the cottage pie but they didn’t have the mashed potatoes prepared yet. We all ordered french fries which were a bit disappointing as they were not crunchy and not very hot. The corned beef was the hands down winner. It is the best corned beef we’ve ever eaten. Get this! The cod was two nice sized pieces with a small side of coleslaw. The cod was not greasy or fishy so it was enjoyable. The cheeseburger was good but could have tasted “meatier”. Maybe it was camouflaged by the cheese, lettuce, and tomato toppings. Apparently, you can order an extra patty for an up-charge. The waiter did a decent job except that he left the dirty dishes on the table far too long – one of my nitpicks. We took home leftovers and asked for additional mustard and thousand island which we were charged for – just so you know. The surprising issue we had is that the amount charged to our credit card was different than the amount on our receipt. It wasn’t much, like $3, but it’s the principal. I emailed the restaurant with a copy of my receipt and credit card statement. I didn’t hear anything for a week so I emailed again and got an immediate response from the owner(?). I was told that they had accidentally switched tips on two checks. I opted for them to refund my credit card but it’s been a month, and I have not received it.

First visit. The food was surprisingly good. Others must already have known this because the place was full on a Thursday evening. The bowl of French Onion Soup ($10.00) was huge, and better than at many other places. Likewise for the Irishman Sandwich ($16.00); it was piled high with corned beef. Matt, our server, came by often to check on us.

Reservations is highly recommended, but if you can be 1st in line for dinner you just may get a seat at the bar. Atmosphere: was normal for a setting in downtown Roanoke. Quaint small space gets loud at times but very cozy and enjoyable. Drinks: Good drinks, basic bar nothing fancy. Offering for everyone from beer to booze. I would like to see some more Virginia products at the bar instead of the same ole cheap liquor. Now the FOOD: This has to be the BEST food downtown Roanoke. Do not let the small kitchen fool you. The Bernard's are excellent Chef's friendly when they can be and will serve you up some really good food. The prices will not break the bank. Comparing the food and pricing to other restaurants, Bernard's beats them on the quality vs value for sure! I hope you get to enjoy this little gem in Roanoke Va soon!

This is a Gastro Pub, meaning small, expensive and pretentious. At first they would not seat us, claiming that we had no reservation - which we had. When they finally found it, on a slip of paper stuck in the book, we were given a table in the middle of the room, 7 of us, in the center of a 3-Ring Circus. My Chicken Milanese, the only dish I will review here, came out with almost paper thin chicken, overcooked and dry, over their potato puree (basically extra whipped mashed potatoes) in a brown gravy, which tasted like a demi-glace that belonged over beef and not a chicken...but as I am not a chef in a gastro-pub...and I will leave it there. Half of our group mostly finished their meals and took the rest home, the other half just left what was there to be cleared with the table, I belonged to the second half. Bernard's has gotten mostly good review, and I wish them good luck and good fortune - its a tough business to be in - but I won't be going back. Oh, and yes they have a bar. You may be able to find parking on the street, but if not, there is a very convenient parking lot on the corner, short walk to the eatery.

We were on a family trip with a one-night stop in Roanoke. We read several reviews about Bernard’s, and decided to give it a try. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Friday night, without a reservation. We were greeted by a very nice host when we arrived and enjoyed the couch (very comfortable!!!) in the small lobby. We were promptly seated at our table (three of us) and greeted by our wonderful waitress (forgot her name???) . We reviewed the menu and we placed our order - 1) club Sandwich w/ French Fries 2) Garlic Parmesan Chicken Sandwich 3) Poached Pear Arugala Salad . All three of our dishes were very very good. We were very impressed with the quality of the food and the price was extremely reasonable for being in downtown Roanoke. We would highly suggest this restaurant for its quaintness, quality, and overall wonderful experience!

We gave them a second chance after a dismal first visit. Yes, the food was delicious when we got it, but the service was so bad, so filled with angst and unhappiness, that it was hard to enjoy. I feel bad for the owner/chef, but, oh my. Yes, the cute narrow space was packed and the staff apologized and complained about being understaffed and working long shifts… Fast forward to visit #2 a couple of weeks later, same or worse environment, empty glasses and anxious patrons everywhere. It’s untenable. So much promise with a fabulous space and menu and chef, but management must change before it’s suitable for humans.

The weekend of Nov 18 2022 I visited friends in VA, and we five went to this restaurant. Attractive place, but service was pathetically slow, and the menu description for my entree was misleading. I ordered chicken piccata; the menu described it with classic flavors and seasonings, served with pasta. I expected the entree to be dominant with chicken, what I got was a typically huge pasta bowl, with enough angel hair pasta to serve 4 adults. The chicken was three small, thin medallions of overcooked, dry chicken. The seasonings were good, but they made a large profit ($24) for a lot of pasta. I hope the other entrees are worth all the glowing reviews, as I feel I was cheated. Perhaps other menu choices deserve the 5 star reviews. I do not recommend this place.

We recently had dinner at Bernard's with friends. We didn't have reservations but were able to get a table on a Wednesday night. I'd probably get them in the future since they were a little busy but they don't have an online system. The menu had a variety of items including appetizers, burgers, and entrees. All of our food was very good. My seafood was very good......even the crab cake, which is rare in Roanoke. The sandwiches looked very good as well. Our server did a very nice job. We'll go back

I have been to Bernard's somewhere around 15 times. Always amazed with the food. Chicken and Toes appetizer is basically glorified bonesless wings, very soft and delicious (parmesan garlic is amazing). I've been here with many different people and have never heard a complaint about the food. When my wife and I actually get a date night, it's hard not go back here.

My wife and I had lunch today (4/13) at Bernard’s. This review has nothing to do with its food nor drink but rather how rudely the “hostess” - actually the bartender - treated a pair of out of town customers! After seating us she immediately returned to her bartending duties rather than immediately seating the obvious out of town guests standing immediately behind us in the foyer. I say obvious by their name tags around their necks!!! After pouring several drinks at the bar she came over to our table asking us if we would like anything to drink! Shocked, as the couple were still standing in the foyer, I politely asked her if she could seat them before taking our order! She actually acted annoyed (!!!) by my request but then proceeded to sit them. Turns out they were from Houston and Italy; attending a conference at the Hotel Roanoke. As we dinned I noticed that out of the 6 occupied tables, 4 were obviously occupied by guests of this conference - all had the similar name tags around their necks. We chatted with the couple for several minutes after they were seated next to us; hoping to show a little bit better Southern Hospitality.

The food was very good. I was pleasantly surprised. Many of the neighboring restaurants come highly recommended and claim to have Roanoke’s best, but have underwhelming food. I expected to have just an ok experience, but the food was delicious and had a nice presentation. Will definitely be returning here.

So so so delicious! Oysters Rockefeller and Shrimp and Grits and Chicken and Dumplings were all delicious! Would recommend 100 times. The restaurant is small so you might want to try to book in advance if you can. We walked in on a whim and were able the eat at the bar. Even though we weren't drinking we loved it. We had a great view of the kitchen from there which was really awesome. We loved it all.

I had a decent sandwich for lunch and decided to return for dinner with a reservation. I showed up 45 minutes before a 6PM reservation for a drink at the bar. There were two staff/bar tenders and one other person at the bar; no crowd in the restaurant. After 15 minutes of being ignored I left. I overheard one staff member saying he had delivered the wrong meal to a table, and watched as he ate in the back while I waited for a drink. If they had been busy I would have stayed and ignored the delay understanding the crunch. I can only imagine the service when they are busy.

Pub atmosphere with nice selection of sandwiches, salads and entrees. Had a late lunch so looking for a simple dinner. Husband had a pastrami & knockwurst sandwich which was packed with meat. I had a poached pear salad with chicken, also very good. Friendly staff. Staff did not wear masks and seating was close to others.
