We took a chance and popped in for lunch after finishing our tour of town. I got French onion soup to start and followed up with their Cuban sandwich. Loaded with meats and laded with flavor. My wife had a hamburger. She raved about it....The fries were equally impressive. Do yourself a favor and drop in for a meal or two. The waitress was working the bar and the tables. Did not miss a beat and was so pleasant throughout.More
The food was good, but restaurants are in the hospitality business. Bernard’s fails on the hospitality score.
Saturday evening, and we called for reservations. Couldn’t get a 7:00 reservation, so we took a 6:00 table. When we arrived, the restaurant was close to empty. There...was a party of two toward the rear, another couple at the bar, and a rowdy table of six near the front. They sat our party of two adjacent to the rowdy table of six.
Oh, rowdy is an understatement. It became quickly evident this was a party of screamers, with an average of two of the six simultaneously screaming to be heard above the other screamers at the table.
By the time we left, one other couple arrived and were seated at the bar. Restaurant was still mostly empty, and the screamers were getting louder and louder. My desire to evacuate got stronger and stronger. My need for ibruprophin was building exponentially.
While the waitress was apologetic, the hostess who seated us was totally unsympathetic. The restaurant was empty. Why did she seat us right next to the rowdy screamers? “We have reservations later tonight. We have a seating plan.”
Cold.Inhospitable. The good food doesn’t overcome the splitting headache.More
Pub atmosphere with nice selection of sandwiches, salads and entrees. Had a late lunch so looking for a simple dinner. Husband had a pastrami & knockwurst sandwich which was packed with meat. I had a poached pear salad with chicken, also very good. Friendly staff....Staff did not wear masks and seating was close to others.More
I had a decent sandwich for lunch and decided to return for dinner with a reservation. I showed up 45 minutes before a 6PM reservation for a drink at the bar. There were two staff/bar tenders and one other person at the bar; no crowd...in the restaurant. After 15 minutes of being ignored I left. I overheard one staff member saying he had delivered the wrong meal to a table, and watched as he ate in the back while I waited for a drink. If they had been busy I would have stayed and ignored the delay understanding the crunch. I can only imagine the service when they are busy.More
My husband and I had dinner here on a Thursday night. I had the crab cakes which were fantastic! My husband had the bourbon glazed salmon which was off the charts phenomenal! The service was also very good! I would eat here again!
If you only go to one restaurant in Roanoke VA you simply must have a meal at this establishment. The food is absolutely amazing. We stopped in Roanoke on our way to Shenandoah and we were so happy to find this gem of a restaurant...- simply awesome.More
We were in the Market area in downtown Roanoke for our Saturday outing. We had narrowed our lunch choices down to two places which were on Jefferson. As we parked and walked towards the Market, we went by Bernard's and decided this was the place....We checked online it said that we needed reservations, so we called and made one for 12:00.
We arrived at noon and were seated in a comfortable booth and greeted with a smile and the menus. Sometimes it's hard to define a gastro pub, because the property sometimes is vague about how it defines itself. And the menu and the layout almost always will tell you what your experience will be.
The setting is cozy and chic, but not gaudy chic. The bar is welcoming. The menu covers the gamut - from snacks & drinks - to regular/special entrees. Plus - the service is attentive and professional - yet extremely friendly.
It's always hard for me to pass on fried pickles, but I did. So - I ordered the Cuban sandwich. My wife ordered a Caesar w/o any add-ons. The Caesar came with a crisp Parmesan Frico layered between the crisp Romaine. The dressing wasn't overwhelming. My Cuban was heavy on the ham and pork with a nice supporting cast of pickles and mustard - plus A+ pile of French Fries, which I shared with my wife.
There's a really nice wine list (my wife had a glass of Kim Crawford SV) and I had a Get Bent IPA.
This place could have been in NYC, SF, DC, Chicago, etc and be a success. Given the opportunity, we'd go back for dinner.More
Great food, large plates, and very reasonable prices. Best meal I've had in Roanoke.
We really enjoyed the Frickles. Usually, fried pickles are greasy and the batter falls off - not these! They were perfect.
The rest of our food was spot on.
Wonderful service,...nice ambiance.More
