The weekend of Nov 18 2022 I visited friends in VA, and we five went to this restaurant. Attractive place, but service was pathetically slow, and the menu description for my entree was misleading. I ordered chicken piccata; the menu described it with classic flavors...and seasonings, served with pasta. I expected the entree to be dominant with chicken, what I got was a typically huge pasta bowl, with enough angel hair pasta to serve 4 adults. The chicken was three small, thin medallions of overcooked, dry chicken. The seasonings were good, but they made a large profit ($24) for a lot of pasta. I hope the other entrees are worth all the glowing reviews, as I feel I was cheated. Perhaps other menu choices deserve the 5 star reviews. I do not recommend this place.More

Holy cow! No hyperbole - The Irishman was the best sandwich I have ever had! You can tell the person who makes it loves food. Everything our family had was excellent. Service was relaxed and friendly. Highly recommend if you like a pub feel without...the usual but less-than-inspiring “pub grub”. Wish I lived in Roanoke so I could visit often.More

We walked to this restaurant from our hotel. Without a doubt, it was a fantastic choice! We sat at the bar and enjoyed conversations with the staff; ended up eating there and had a great meal! It was wonderful to see the staff and realize...how happy they were to be there! The chefs were so involved in the preparation and cooking... best mussels ever! So neat to see a husband/wife team create such a great place!More

Great food! I was disappointed they didn’t have the pastrami sandwich that’s on their online menu, but I took the bar tenders advice and did the corned beef sandwich. Very good. There is a lot more on the menu I want to check out.

We ate dinner here after having only cocktails the night before. The food looked and smelled so good we had to come back and try it. The owners are also the chefs. The filet/scallops special that night was excellent, as was the salmon that is...listed on the menu. Our waiter (Jimmy) was very informative and is an asset for the restaurant. We were sorry we weren't staying in town longer so that we could eat another meal there.More

My wife and I had lunch today (4/13) at Bernard’s. This review has nothing to do with its food nor drink but rather how rudely the “hostess” - actually the bartender - treated a pair of out of town customers! After seating us she immediately...returned to her bartending duties rather than immediately seating the obvious out of town guests standing immediately behind us in the foyer. I say obvious by their name tags around their necks!!! After pouring several drinks at the bar she came over to our table asking us if we would like anything to drink! Shocked, as the couple were still standing in the foyer, I politely asked her if she could seat them before taking our order! She actually acted annoyed (!!!) by my request but then proceeded to sit them. Turns out they were from Houston and Italy; attending a conference at the Hotel Roanoke. As we dinned I noticed that out of the 6 occupied tables, 4 were obviously occupied by guests of this conference - all had the similar name tags around their necks. We chatted with the couple for several minutes after they were seated next to us; hoping to show a little bit better Southern Hospitality.More

We went to Bernard’s for St Patty's Day dinner. I ordered the fish and chips. While eating the French fries I found something chewy in my mouth. It turns out they fried a rubber band in my fish and chips. The waiter apologized for the...mistake. I wanted the chef and owner to come out and apologize but he didn’t have the respect to apologize himself. Are you that big a jerk that you can’t come out and apologize? What if I had swollowed the rubber band? I have been dining in Roanoke for eight years and never did I have this problem at any other restaurant. I am not going back to this restaurant ever again.More

Great food options. Service may be slow during busy nights, but the food is very good. Wings being around $2 each is a little steep.

We took a chance and popped in for lunch after finishing our tour of town. I got French onion soup to start and followed up with their Cuban sandwich. Loaded with meats and laded with flavor. My wife had a hamburger. She raved about it....The fries were equally impressive. Do yourself a favor and drop in for a meal or two. The waitress was working the bar and the tables. Did not miss a beat and was so pleasant throughout.More

The food was good, but restaurants are in the hospitality business. Bernard’s fails on the hospitality score. Saturday evening, and we called for reservations. Couldn’t get a 7:00 reservation, so we took a 6:00 table. When we arrived, the restaurant was close to empty. There...was a party of two toward the rear, another couple at the bar, and a rowdy table of six near the front. They sat our party of two adjacent to the rowdy table of six. Oh, rowdy is an understatement. It became quickly evident this was a party of screamers, with an average of two of the six simultaneously screaming to be heard above the other screamers at the table. By the time we left, one other couple arrived and were seated at the bar. Restaurant was still mostly empty, and the screamers were getting louder and louder. My desire to evacuate got stronger and stronger. My need for ibruprophin was building exponentially. While the waitress was apologetic, the hostess who seated us was totally unsympathetic. The restaurant was empty. Why did she seat us right next to the rowdy screamers? “We have reservations later tonight. We have a seating plan.” Cold.Inhospitable. The good food doesn’t overcome the splitting headache.More

Pub atmosphere with nice selection of sandwiches, salads and entrees. Had a late lunch so looking for a simple dinner. Husband had a pastrami & knockwurst sandwich which was packed with meat. I had a poached pear salad with chicken, also very good. Friendly staff....Staff did not wear masks and seating was close to others.More

I had a decent sandwich for lunch and decided to return for dinner with a reservation. I showed up 45 minutes before a 6PM reservation for a drink at the bar. There were two staff/bar tenders and one other person at the bar; no crowd...in the restaurant. After 15 minutes of being ignored I left. I overheard one staff member saying he had delivered the wrong meal to a table, and watched as he ate in the back while I waited for a drink. If they had been busy I would have stayed and ignored the delay understanding the crunch. I can only imagine the service when they are busy.More
