It’s a wonderful restaurant hidden behind vines with an unassuming sign stating “bistro and wine bar”. You’re introduced inside with a tasteful interior decorated in dim warm lighting, artwork, and arrays of wine bottles. The staff are extremely knowledgeable knowing their dishes with all of...their ingredients, verbatim. The food is wonderful quality and the experience is what you could expect of a high end establishment. If you are looking to impress company or refresh yourself on the finer end of cuisine, I highly recommend it. The staff were welcoming and very pleasant to speak with on the way out. I would recommend you dress nicely for the occasion as it should be on the formal end of dining.More

Absolutely amazing from the food, friendly/helpful staff and charming atmosphere. Easy five stars! You have to try this place. We are boaters passing through town and will come back again on our travels.

The hubby and I haven't dined here since the early 90's so it was a trip into the past for us. It hasn't changed, the ambience is still cozy and warm. White tablecloth, Mediterranean decor, lovely soft music welcomes the diner. I can only give...it 4 stars due to some service issues. Upon arriving for our reservation and being seated, we did not receive menus or a server for at least 10 minutes. The restaurant was not full. Finally, when a server came for a drink order, we asked for menus, but we still did not receive a wine list. Still, no water was brought. Several tables entered that were obviously local, regular patrons. Those tables got immediate, impeccable attention. All in all, I had to ask 3 times for water which I finally received when our entrees arrived. I guess we'll have to become regulars. The owner takes the order and other staff bring beverages, bread, desserts so it is hard to feel like you're being properly served. My last complaint is the bread service. Pre-packaged, peel of the top butter pats you find in breakfast diners is completely unacceptable. When a customer sees the menu items, the prices, and the gorgeous atmosphere, please put cut butter on the plate! It's the minor details that mar the overall impression of an establishment. If you think this sounds picky or harsh, let me assure you that I ended up overcoming all these details because the staff sincerely apologized for the many delays and the food is absolutely delicious. For starters, we ordered duck pate. It was a very generous portion of pate with a tiny bit of dressed greens. Entrees were Veal Martini, and the Portuguese Stew. We felt both entrees were decent portions. I've seen the reviews claiming a sparse amount, but we had plenty. Both were absolutely outstanding and sitting here writing this review, all I want is more of that delicious stew! We ordered the peach tart for dessert and a generous slice of tart and dollop of vanilla ice cream came with the espresso. In the end, hubby and I would do it again! This reviewer encourages the reader to go to this hidden gem and experience the magnificent flavors!More

We loved the Old European decor of Cafe Europa with the dark coffered paneling, artwork on the walls, set up of the various eating areas, color scheme, chargers on the tables. Service was good and very efficient. The food was delicious. And, oh my, the...desserts were out of this world!More

My husband and I celebrated our 43rd anniversary at Cafe Europa. We were greeted by the lovely owner who sat us at a table in the beautiful and romantic dining area. She told us the many specials for the evening, all of which sounded great....My husband and I both chose the goat cheese salad, which was excellent. I chose a special entree of leg of lamb that came with perfectly cooked rice and pea pods, and my husband chose the regular menu, Veal Cafe Europa, which was so good, I'd order that next time. For our wine, we ordered a delicious French Pinot Noir with our dinner. Then a waitress came and told us in great detail the list of 15 home made desserts! I chose a coconut ice cream cake with mango through it and a chocolate crust. Really to die for! Hubby had a blueberry pie with ice cream that he said was delicious too. All in all, a phenomenal dinner and perfectly romantic experience for a wonderful anniversary. We highly recommend this really elegant restaurant.More

I wanted to love it since it has an actual chef. Unfortunately, it fell short. One pet peeve, they crowd people into adjacent tables when the front room was empty. We wanted a private dinner, not sitting close together and we had a reservation. Also,...upgrade your bread service, the baguette was tough and using portion pack butter is low class. It was strange that all apps were $14.95; escargot versus some romaine lettuce should not be the same price. We had the lamb and the veal entrees. The amount of protein was shocking, it was sliced thin but probably didn’t weigh 3 ounces. We were still hungry so we went next place down and got a seafood platter with sides for $25. Dessert was also average, mango tiramisu.More

If you want to experience authentic Mediterranean cuisine then Cafe' Europa is the restaurant for you!. The food is fresh, presented like a portrait and served as you would expect if you lived in the home of the owners and chefs Veronique and Michael. Inside...your eyes take in a wood-paneled dinning room and bar. Clothe tablecloths and the finest china and placed carefully at each table. You ask yourself, "are you in Portsmouth, Virginia or are you in the south of France?" Step into this lovely space and enjoy a night of exquisite food, cheerful and attentive attendants, and a feeling of love and respect. Bravo Cafe' Europa, Bravo!More

This long-time favorite for fine dining in Portsmouth's OldeTowne offers Continental cuisine in a subdued setting. Service is formal and attentive and the bill will reflect this. Both on-street and garage parking is nearby.
