If you visit Balboa Island plan to stop for desert or just a treat at Dad's Donut Shop. I have been coming here since I was a kid and the Balboa Bars, Frozen Banana's and Hippo Cookies haven't changed. Other shops claim to have better chocolate but it just isn't true, go with the original, Dad's and enjoy the treat.... More

While exploring Balboa Island, I figured I would try a frozen banana since they originated from the area (plus, I'm a fan of Arrested Development). While a novel experience, but it wasn't anything mind-blowing and pretty much exactly as I expected: a frozen banana dipped in chocolate. If I ever come back, I would definitely try a Balboa Bar.

I topped off lunch with the Balboa Bar here. It's a vanilla ice cream bar freshly dipped in chocolate, and I chose the butterbrickle topping. It satisfied my sweet tooth tremendously!

I had heard of this place before but nothing compared to experiencing it in person. The lady at the counter was very friendly and the balboa bars with chocolate sprinkles were yummy!

The chocolate is thicker and the the toppings are over the top. Can't go wrong. The line moves quickly too.

Another one of those "Oh, you gotta try it, it's a classic" place. Tourist trap? Perhaps (the ice cream is not made there) or perhaps not (where else can you get a frozen banana these days?) Next time I'll try a different version of the banana, but skip most everything else.

Food places come and go on Balboa Island. Dad's has been here for a zillion years because they are the best for yogurt, frozen bananas, and "Balboa" Bars. Avoid Tutti Fruity like the plague. Sugar and Spice is your second choice.
