I have to be honest here. Now that we can afford this sort of experience without anxiously adding up the cost and blanching at the mark up on the wine, I find I have gone off that very attentive style of service. I liked my summer salad starter best. Mains (lamb) were fine. The orange meringue was awful - soggy... More

Visited today for the first time with my husband for Sunday lunch. I had the pea mousse starter which was delightful, light and fresh tasting and my husband opted for the barbeque pork starter - again very tasty. We both chose roast beef which was a very generous portion with all the trimmings cooked perfectly. Desserts delicious. Our only tiny... More

We stayed at South Lodge for one night and had dinner at Camellia. Between us, we opted for the '64 Degree Egg' and 'Pigeon' to start, followed by the 'Lamb Shoulder' and 'Chicken' for mains, finished with the 'Raspberry' dessert to share. All dishes were delicious, beautifully presented, and expertly cooked. I can certainly attest to their use of locally... More

Great surroundings for a special occasion. Attentive service. Tasty starters but miniscule; same for main. Desserts were awful - a rhubarb tart which had been refrigerated for hours was tough and tasteless; ice cream on other dessert also tasteless. Compulsory service charge which the waiter told us went directly to the hotel. Another one in the greed league. I find... More

Beautiful setting, superb food, wonderful atmosphere. The staff were attentive but not overbearing. We were also given anniversary petit fours and a glass of Nyetimber. All in all, a wonderful dining experience! We always like going.

I've eaten here a number of times over the years, and this meal did not disappoint. I enjoyed the mixed salad, fried (sauteed) sea bass, and a spectacular cheese board for dessert. I had planned to end the meal in the bar with a coffee, but was too full to consume anything. I found the service to be excellent, with... More

Arrived with my daughter wanting an informal meal - looked at bar which was a bit airless so asked if we could eat In The restaurant but have bar food if we wanted. A slight pause while they thought about and then a charming yes. In the end ate a mix of bar food and restaurant menus. So -- the... More

With its excellent reputation, the food came as a big disappointment to us and coupled with average service, the experience did fall short of expectations. I had a starter of Lobster Ravioli (£22) which was tasteless and lacking in seasoning. One of my friends was totally underwhelmed by her scallop starter (£18) which was very much on the small side.... More

My husband and I had a lovely two night stay at South Lodge and we eat in the Camellia. The food was amazing and the hotel suite was wonderful too. My only reason for not giving full marks is that of all the staff there, there was only one that really stood out. I congratulate Etien who greeted us with... More

Lunch at the Camellia was - like the Curate's egg - good in parts. The setting is superb and the view over the garden is breathtaking, but the service was not up to the usual South Lodge standard. The attention of the staff appeared to have been diverted by a group of delegates from a Leadership course running at the... More
