I'd passed this restaurant a few times on the way to Charlottesville and finally had the time to stop today. The food was wonderful...It was restaurant week and I went with the choices on the special menu. Appetizer was bratwurst with a tasty mustard and potatoes...loved it! Entre of seared pork filet with green beans and zucchini...scattered pomme frites as... More

We stopped in for C'ville area restaurant week and were able to try some GREAT food at a very fair price and WOW, it knocked out socks off! The same family that opened this very popular (and somewhat famous) German restaurant in 1974 still owns and operates it. All of the dishes they prepared for our group were done very... More

We stumbled upon this place on a Friday night on our way to UVA. Though it was crowded and we had no reservations we were promptly seated in the loft which had low ceilings with open rafters. It felt like we had just landed in Frankfurt and taken a ride into the country side. The soup and the schnitzel were... More

Excellent food and service, the bratwurst with sauerkraut/mashed potatoes outstanding appetizer. You may want to dine family style as the entrees are big enough for two to share.

We had dined at the Bavarian Chef a few years ago and remembered a menu item "Roasted Pepper Soup - with Crab" as being outstanding. We traveled a bit out of our way to have lunch here. We knocked on the door to find it was not open for lunch with the exception of the weekends. When I told the... More

Based on the reviews for The Bavarian Chef, I expected much better food quality. I took my husband here for our anniversary because he had been asking to go for a long time. I made reservations, which was easy and the the hostess was very pleasant. When we arrived we were seated immediately upstairs. They were having several Christmas parties... More

Authentic and wonderful. Reservations a must! This restaurant is always packed! My daughter in law (born of German parents in Heidelberg), spoke very highly of the cuisine, its presentation and authenticity. The wait staff is knowledgable and helpful. Much of the clientele is drawn from the D.C. area, making an immense statement regarding the popularity of the Bavarian Chef! (That's... More

A friend and I visited the Bavarian Chef earlier today. The food was pretty good quality - and I happen to like large portions, just like a good German:). But I was appalled at the unprofessional attitude of the hostess. I wanted a table in the main dining room and she rudely retorted that all tables were taken and that... More

The serving sizes were too large for one person. They take a certain pride in that, but if you can, I'd ask about splitting a course. The prices were a little high for the region and the authenticity to German cuisine was questionable. At least from my 3 plus years in Germany. I think the restaurant tried to add a... More
