The bistro is a quaint, small restaurant, on Main Street in Lexington, Virginia. The main restaurant area had two large round tables, and I believe four or five banquette tables. The bar area had seating at the bar and 3? tables. Having just arrived in Lexington,...and checked into our hotel, we decided to go to The Bistro for dinner. When we entered, the server was cleaning off a table in the far right corner, which we thought was lucky for us, because we would get a table right away. By now it was about 7:25 pm, and the restaurant closed at 8. The server politely asked if we had reservations, and upon learning that we did not, told us that the only available seating was at the bar. At this point, at least 2 of the bar tables were empty, as well as a couple in the dining room. We took our seats at the bar and were served by a very polite and friendly gentleman. I had the puttanesca and my companion had the sirloin. Mine was very good, and his just okay. When we left the restaurant at 8, not one party arrived to be seated at the empty tables. So we wondered why we were delegated to the bar, when, obviously, no other customers, with reservations arrived? Plus it was 35 minutes to closing, when we arrived, so you would think that they would know when reservations would arrive. We did not complain, because we had an enjoyable, relaxing meal, and the gentleman who served us was so congenial, making us feel welcome. However, we felt that there was no reason to be sent to sit at the bar, when no other reservations were expected.More

We were delighted to have discovered this fabulous restaurant. The shrimp n grits were like mothers milk - and the bread pudding made me cry, it was good!

We had a very nice dinner with our son at Bistro on Main. The waitress was outstanding—very attentive but not intrusive. We liked the vibe of the place and enjoyed visiting with fellow parents on either side of our table. Everything was great but the...food was just good, and based on reviews we were expecting better. The thick white bread slices that came first looked great but were surprisingly sweet and had an cornbread like consistency with crusty exterior. Not our favorite. They were out of the calamari we had wanted for a starter, so we ordered spinach/artichoke dip and warm Brie to share. The dip was yummy and the baguette slices that accompanied were very good (not sweet, thank goodness). The warm Brie could have used a little more effort as it appeared to have just been a miniature round of Brie that had been microwaved and the fruit compote was served in a small cup on the side. But we never met a cheese we did not like and it was delicious. The side salads were good and a nice option for ordering with your entree. Our son enjoyed his burger which was very generous in size and the fries were fantastic. My husband had the frenched chicken, which was good but not great. The shrimp and grits that I had was good— the shrimp properly cooked but the grits may have needed a little more time—again good, but not a clean plate club entry. All in all we enjoyed our dinner and would give it another try, but the food is not top of our list.More

We were welcomed warmly, hailed from the bar, and seated in the spare interior, amid stylish guests of all ages. We admired the vividly colored paintings by landscape artist Ryan Russell as we sipped our bourbon-barrel beers. Attentive host served us fresh greens with goat...cheese, slivered almonds with a light homemade dressing and we marveled that we could actually hear each other. The special of the house was cod, prepared crispy and tender with a delicious sauce. For a 93 year old and 67 year old who had no expectations, we were delighted and surprised to have a perfect dinner on a wet cold evening in February at the Bistro on Main.More

Dined here for NY's night and the place was not crowded at all. My mountain trout was just Ok, very small and without lots of good taste. The slaw was just good, my two glasses of wine were good and the service good and friendly.

On our way back from Abingdon, VA to Richmond, VA, we stopped here for lunch. It was our second restaurant we visited in Lexington. Food and service were very good.

Lobster Bisque, Salad, Spring Rolls were very tasty. Better still was the Bar service from Mortye, and the staff person that greeted us with hello rather than "do you have a reservation?"

Wine list is priced very well. The artichoke and spring roll appetizers were delicious! My only complaint, and it's substantial, is that the food came to the table at a tepid temperature. They were busy, but that was a big turn-off. Otherwise, the food was...tasty; just not hot.More

We were stayed in Lexington on our way from NC to PA. It was a Friday night and there were several events going on so the town was busy. We attempted to dine at a couple of trendier brew pubs but the wait was ridiculous...so we wandered the town until we came across the Bistro on Main. Sometimes things happen for a reason because we had an EXCELLENT meal and experience. Most of the tables were reserved so we gladly settled in at the bar. We had a great conversation with the bar keep, who was also running the front of the house and waiting the tables in the bar area as they just can’t find staff. We took his recommendation for the seafood lasagna special. Special it was! The flavors were wonderful and the portion size was just right, not the oversized monstrosity served by many restaurants these days. We paired our reasonably priced dinner with an equally reasonably price Petite Syrah and could not have been happier. We left a very generous tip for what turned out to be incredibly attentive service by a clearly overworked staff member who maintained a positive attitude despite the less than ideal situation. Do yourself a favor and skip the trendy spots for the Bistro. You won’t be disappointed!More

While driving home from vacation, we spontaneously chose to stop and spend a night in Lexington, VA. We are glad that we did! After a quick internet search for dinner options, we made a reservation at the Bistro on Main. This restaurant is spotlessly clean,...the staff was friendly and the menu was nice. We ordered the special, blackened cobia fish. It was served with a squash medley and a creamy, cheesy rice. This meal was delicious!!! We were lucky enough to meet the owner, Jackie. We enjoyed chatting with her for a few minutes as we were leaving. This spot is a gem in downtown Lexington. If you are in the area, stop by, it’s great.More

This was the last stop on our post-COVID cycle around our favorite restaurants in the area. We had enjoyed several #5 meals here each time. We had a 6:45 reservation on a Saturday night and arrived a little before and were greeted with hearty smile...by the barkeep and pointed to a table in the main dining room - next to some neighbors from Kendal. Medea, our server - immediately appeared to welcome us and take our drink orders. My wife - a NZ SB, Fernland, and me - a Woodford on the rocks. We heard the specials - Unicorn Fish encrusted with pecans(?) and a 16 oz Ribeye. We passed and my wife went with the Frenched Chicken and I ordered the 10 oz (?) NY Strip from a local beef farm - both with a Caesar's side. And home made bread soon appeared. The salad came quickly. The romaine was crisp and the dressing, while plentiful, didn't over power the lettuce. Our mains (both with mashed potatoes and green beans) came - nicely plated. The chicken was tender and the sauce perfectly French. My steak looked perfect - and the first piece was evidence that it had been cooked perfectly. Then it got a little tough. The slicing and chewing - as there was a sinew running through the middle of the meat - plus a string of gristle around one side. It made the cutting of bite size pieces a little hard - and some good beef was probably wasted in the process. But - like most local beef - it was heavy on the beefy flavor. Plus it was season nicely. The Bistro has great atmosphere and there's no ambient noise to hinder table talk., The service and prices are excellent. It was a pleasant date night in Lexington.More
