We stopped by the Red Hen on a food tour recently. They prepared a risotto for our tasting. 1. I've never had risotto. 2. I would eat this risotto daily - it's that good! The flavors were truly intense and just bursting on your tongue, Topped with some lamb and a few slivers of cheese. Heaven.

We've been fans for years and have watched it improve steadily. Small and delightful, their food is not to be missed.

Came here while driving thru to the Homestead. Sister in Law whose son attends VMI knew about it (never been) & heard it was very good. Her sources were correct. Emphasis on farm to market trying to source not only produce but meat as well. Jessie took a personal interest in us and we learned a great deal about the... More

The people of Lexington have done a fabulous job of maintaining the charm of its old buildings in the downtown area, and The Red Hen is no exception. It is in a small and old building, but the food is remarkable, and the service is equal to the food. I had the braised lamb, and without exaggeration do I report... More

We had a superb dinner at this small restaurant in Lexington, VA. It was just what we like - local foods, carefully prepared, attentive wait staff, and an outstanding list of original cocktails.

Just going to say, so not worth the price. My steak, while cooked to a prefect medium rare, did not have a good taste and was terribly tough to cut and chew. My vegetables were almost inedible. It was like they were just heated through but not actually cooked. They were almost raw. Considering there were three Cooks preparing the... More

This is one of those rare venues where everything works to the advantage of the guest. The reason it works so very well is because every single person in the restaurant is actually present and functioning in the moment; not by muscle memory. My husband asked not to have his food salted and it was not. He asked to have... More

This place is amazing! I have many food allergies and when I notify them when I make my reservation they have a specially made menu waiting for me when I get there. The food, even allergen-free is absolutely delicious. Best I've had in Lex for sure and as a student I've tried most of the restaurants.

We ate there on Friday July 8, 2016. I had a chicken pot pie that was tasty, but the vegetables were undercooked and almost raw. My friend had a locally sourced skirt steak that was cooked correctly, but was tough to chew. For the prices they charge the food should be prepared correctly, and their bragging about "locally grown &... More
