I joined a couple of friends for a leisurely lunch on one of the few weekdays they are now open for lunch. Upon arrival the receptionist at the front entry wanted to know if we had reservations. We did not know we needed reservations but...were seated at a nice window table. The restaurant only had about a dozen other customers during the time we were there. We had to use our smartphones to review the menu, order and pay for our drinks and food. We had servers that were very kind and patient helping with the process since this was all new to us. Not sure what customers would do if they do not have a smartphone. The food overall was okay. My Chicken Chesapeake was tasty and the portions very generous. It did appear the dish had been warmed up and not freshly prepared. My asparagus was soggy and overcooked. Just a couple notes to customers planning to go in the near future. Read the website or call so you understand you need reservations although the place may appear empty. They add 20% gratuity automatically to all orders listed as a service charge. They also have a line on the bill for additional gratuity to the already 20%, so you could double tip if not careful. I am not sure why they add 20% gratuity if you can use your smartphone to order and pay for everything. It appears all the server would need to do is bring drinks and food to the table. I know COVID-19 has changed many things restaurants can do and not do for safety so I overlook some inconvenience.More
Due to COVID, the restaurant used a mobile ordering system - basically you scan a QR code with your phone, select menu items to add to cart, and pay for the items in your cart. You can do this all at once, or if you...want to get your orders at different times, you'll have to make different orders and pay each time. The system didn't work great - there may have been some miscommunication in the kitchen because we'd receive our orders, and then the wait staff would come out with the same order for us mistakenly. I'd imagine under normal circumstances, it wouldn't be as disorganized. Food was decent, but we felt it was slightly overpriced, although a 20% gratuity is included in the price. Location was beautiful. Overall it was alright, felt safe eating there, but would have likely enjoyed it more under normal circumstances.More
My first and last time dining at this restaurant. On Monday of last week when the announcement was made that the restaurants would start to open back up I immediately made reservations to the Boathouse in Hopewell. It had been over 3 months since my...husband and I had been out to eat and we wanted to try this place so we decided to give it a go. It was by far the worst dining experience I have ever had. I will say the food was incredible but that is the only nice thing I can say about this place. When making reservations we were not informed of the new procedures. Upon being sat at our tables we were told that we needed to scan a QR code with our phones and that would be how we were to order. The “captain” (which we saw once) told us that if we were to order everything at once then everything would come out at once. So we had to order our drinks, pay for them, and then they would be sent to the kitchen or bar to be made. If we wanted to order an appetizer we would have to order it separately then pay for it and then it would be sent to the kitchen. Then when we were ready to order our food we would pull up the app for the third time, choose our food, pay for it and then send it to the kitchen. Now several issues come to mind when having to do this, first that means multiple charges on my card which some companies will flag as fraud and therefore not allow any additional charges from the same company go through. In fact one of our friends has Bank of America and they did exactly that, froze her account until today when she was able to go to the bank and explain what had happened. Another issue was the refills on drinks, you also order those through the app. My husband waited 23 minutes for a soda refill. 23 minutes!! We also waited 15 minutes for straws, STRAWS!!! I had to order my togo box! And to ask someone walking by for something was like asking them to commit murder. They all look at you with a deer in headlights look on their faces. Oh I forgot the best part, every time you place an order you get slapped with a 20% service fee, and when I asked what that was for the staff said it was tip out to all the employees and the servers were getting a flat rate of $20 per hour. My table alone spent $300, so imagine the amount of money that is going to the owners pocket even after overhead and payroll. I get the safety issue, I honestly do but I got dressed up and wanted to have a nice dinner with friends. The whole point of going out to eat is to be waited on. I don’t want to have to tell an app that I need a refill. A staff member should see my drink as empty and automatically ask to get me a replacement. I have worked as a server, bartender, and manager in restaurants for half of my life and would never let my patrons be served like this. Alot of business has been lost because of this new policy, in fact as we were being seated a party of older guests were leaving. Once we sat down and saw the new princess we figured out pretty quickly why they left. Hopewell is full of older people with old money and old ways of thinking. They all do not have a smart phone, this is a very poor way to treat guests. I would say it is almost borderline age shaming. Shame on you Boathouse, shame on you.More
Had a great dinner. Restaurant is nice. Great atmosphere. View is fantastic! Too cold to sit outside, but will be back! Derek was GREAT! Food came out quick and was all delicious. Seated right on time for our reservation.
My boyfriend and I go to The Boathouse for happy hour quite often, especially in the summer. We've been telling my parents about it for a while now with the delicious food, amazing drinks, and fabulous view. Last night, we finally got my parents out...here for my mom's birthday. They LOVED it! We had great service and even when they didn't have the dessert she wanted and we ordered something different, the restaurant manager came over to offer a complimentary dessert for the next time we visit. We can't wait to bring them back!More
