Excellent food. Doing best they can with COVID. Recommend take away--Flies!

Pulled pork is lean and pulled chicken has an excellent flavor. Brunswick stew wasn't thick enough for our liking. We ordered extra pumpkin muffins to take home. They're that good. Open for call-in ordering and picnic tables are set up under a tent to eat outdoors only. The place is popular and busy and it took multiple speed dialing attempts to get through to someone inside to place our order. The servers seemed to be doing the best they could hustling out the food orders, but no one bused tables, and we saw no evidence of any attempt to wipe or sanitize between customers. Unfortunately, there were flies everywhere. We tried to peel back a food wrapper to get a bite, but the flies were swarming, making it pretty much impossible to eat here. Recommend you take food home to eat or wait until COVID restrictions allow them to open the dining room back up.

Simply delicious

I've only been to the Exchange twice but have been delighted each time by how good it is. I plan on more returns when I'm in the area again. I haven't been adventurous so far, as I've ordered the same thing each time: the BBQ beef brisket sandwich with a side of collard greens. I love collard greens and this place does them right. Also, the beef brisket is fabulous, rich, and moist. If you like coleslaw, you can ask for a dollop of it on top of your meat inside the sandwich.

Amazing food, wonderful atmosphere, fantastic people

I have been known to drive hours to visit Gordonsville exclusively for BBQ Exchange. The food is wonderful every single time, no matter what it is (try the tofu!), and the people who own this place and work here could not possibly be more fantastic people. There is always service with a smile, no matter if you're ordering a takeout dinner for two or a delivery of food for 50.

Good food, but...

Everyone knows that the food at this place is very good, and under normal times, this review would have given them much higher marks. Unfortunately, our recent lunch there was one of my worst lunch experiences ever. They have menus outside and you have to call in your order, that part went fine. We sat at the picnic tables out front and the food was brought to us in a plastic bag, all good so far. Our credit card was taken inside to make our payment. As soon as we opened our food we were attacked by flies. It made it very hard to eat, I didn't dare open more than one food item at a time, and it was hard to eat and swat flies at the same time. I also started noticing that other customers were finishing up and leaving and the tables they sat at were not being wiped down/disinfected. Again, great food, but maybe takeout would be better just now.

Better Before

Excellent pulled pork sandwich full of meat. Six different sauces. Average potato salad. Three different kinds of slaw. But husband ordered the purgatory. Don't bother. It's awful! It contained delicious fried green tomatoes with spicy pimento cheese. And 3 thick slices of some kind of pork that we couldn't even chew. I took one of the pieces out to eat by itself and it was so hard it made my jaw hurt. Ithe menu says pork and underneath it says brisket. He expected pork BBQ and beef brisket. When I told the lady how hard to chew it was and that they had forgotten the brisket on the sandwich she said it was pork brisket and didn't offer anything else. It was the most expensive sandwich so just don't order it. Any other choice would probably be good.

Disappointing

We drive out of our way based on the reviews. I hope they were having a bad day but the BBQ was just average - at best. The price of a basic BBQ sandwich was stunningly high - I am all for local businesses making a profit - but my advice is check the menu for prices in advance

We are staying at the nearby Shenandoh Crossings and this place gets rave reviews from the staff, but we were disappointed. No inside dining, but the outside area was decent. Stand in line ordering was chaotic and crowded. And slow. My husband had a rib meal and I had a brisket meal for $48! Pricey for bbq. Ribs were fatty and not exciting. Brisket was quite good and crazy tender. Potato salad is very mustardy (not my taste) and beans were average. Hush puppies and cole slaw were good. Overall, a disappointing experience.

Drove quite a ways to have supper here. After walking up to the table to order I was informed that I had to order online. Instead of just taking my order and type it into their computer so we just decided to leave and go down the street to well hung Vineyards. The food was great with plenty of seating and a great waitress. Not everybody has smartphones to call in an order while standing in front of their waitress to have pulled pork. Will not be back

Used to be good

When we first went to BBQ Ex, the food was wonderful! Since they’ve been visited by the food network, their quality has gone downhill yet pricing remains the same or higher. Service is not that great currently, hopefully it will improve after covid is over. Go to L&Js up the street in the antique parking lot. They are fresh & good! Pricing is very reasonable!

disappointing. expected better

disappointing. expected better bbq flavor. chopped brisket was stringy and tough and covered with sauce to try and moisten the meat. actually asked for the sauce on the side and the sandwich was slathered w sauce. couldn’t use the sauce on the side. pulled chicken had no bbq flavor, basically cooked chicken w bland ketchup sauce over it. bbq beans were good. also, local meals tax was more than even the state sales tax. looks like they calculated the meals tax on the total of the meal and state tax combined. made a point to stop based on tv show, not what i expected!

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Our chopped brisket is tossed in sauce - I am very sorry the person taking your order did not understand what you asked. We do have all of the sauces available on the side, and the sliced brisket is served without sauce. Our pulled chicken bbq spends 8 hours on the smoker before being tossed in our QX Sweet sauce. I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy your meal. Regarding the taxes, we do have to charge both meals + sales tax, as you were charged, based on the state regulations. We do realize it does add up. Oily!!! what happened???!!!

We stopped by last Sunday for a family meal to go. The barbecue was drenched in an orangey oil. By the time we got home, the oil was sloshed out of the sides of the package…a slimy mess. If you are going to weigh the barbecue, please dont charge your customers for that oil! I have never experienced this before, but seriously, the barbecue was fatty and too oily. Just not good. The pepper cabbage, collards and stew were excellent though.

Poor Experience

Been eating here for a couple of years, getting the Family Meal because it was the best deal, today they wanted to charge us $5 for two paper containers, stating our meal was a take out. After that attitude I will never leave a tip, because as they pointed out, its take out!!!

Thank for your feedback and I am sorry you feel that way but you wanted a family meal to eat at the restaurant which it states on the paper menu and the menu boards is packaged to go and to eat at the restaurant is a $5 up charge which covers the cost of the containers, silverware and sauce that is not included in the cost that you used when you still sat and ate the meal at the restaurant. We are appreciative of everyone generous enough to tip us whether eating in or taking out.

Pretty good bbq and decent atmosphere

This place was recommended by several locals we spoke with. The food was good and had good flavor. We shared the 4 meat platter which had ribs, brisket, chicken and pulled pork. My wife like the ribs, but I personally thought they were the worst of the 4. The other meats were solid and cooked well. The hush puppies were outstanding. Corn bread should’ve been warm. The staff were great. I would visit this place again, but would try others in the area first.

Good eating!

We ordered a family meal that allowed us to have leftovers for another dinner. We ordered online and gave a time we wanted to pick it up, which was wonderful (you can order early this way). We were sent a text when our meal was ready on their front porch. This worked very well. We had the sliced beef brisket, it was delicious - very moist. There is also a choice of three sides, and pumpkin muffins / cornbread were included. Everything was excellent.

Good lunch stop after wine tasting!

My husband and I stopped in for lunch after visiting several wineries in the area, and were not disappointed! We needed something to soak up the alcohol we had consumed and our meal did just that! There was a long line upon entering, but that was to be expected on a Saturday afternoon. And it moved pretty quickly. I had the ribs & brisket with baked beans and potato salad (oh, and cornbread too). And my husband had the ribs & pulled pork, all of which was filling and delicious! If we're ever back in the area visiting again, we'd stop back in for a bbq bite!
