My husband and I stayed close to home for our 33-year wedding anniversary and decided to have our celebration dinner at Denson’s in Colonial Beach, Va. Our reservation (definitely need reservations) was for 6:30pm. We arrived ahead of time but only had to wait a...short while before we were seated. Immediately upon entry to the store/restaurant the aroma hit me. It smelled so good. We were greeted by the owner/chef – Rocky Denson and his wife, Blaire. They were very welcoming. I was happy we had a few minutes before sitting down so we had a chance to look at the food and beverage items available in the grocery part of the business. They offer a selection of local and non-local wine and beer as well as cheeses, meats and pre-made offerings that are grab and go items.
We were seated at one of the 5 tables available in the enclosed porch. During the warmer months they have an outside area that seats roughly the same number of people as inside. We started off with our beverage order. My husband ordered the Blue Mountain Brewery Kolsch they have on tap and I ordered a glass of Man (South Africa) Chardonnay. We’ve both had the Kolsch before when we visited Blue Mountain Brewery but this was my first taste of this wine, it was very good.
Blaire explained the oyster options available. They offer a bubble and brine flight along with 3 cooked options Denson’s Style Order, Oysters Rockefeller and Cackalacky style. We ordered a combination of Denson’s style and Rockefeller style, 3 each. Both were good but the Denson’s style (butter, garlic and parmesan cheese) were our favorite. Next, we each ordered a soup course. My husband ordered Oyster soup and I ordered the Lobster bisque. What can I say – they were both DELICIOUS.
For dinner, my husband ordered the 14oz Delmonico steak with green beans and mashed potatoes. He ordered the steak rare and it was cooked to perfection. Rocky came out to ask if the steak was cooked like he wanted. I ordered Rockfish – grilled with crispy Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. The fish was cooked to perfection – very light and flakey with just the right amount of seasoning. The Brussel sprouts were to die for – I loved them. The green beans were very simply prepared and delicious and the mashed potatoes were creamy goodness.
Neither of us could finish our dinners so we boxed them up for home. Blaire offered us a free dessert to celebrate our anniversary. She explained the desserts available – bread pudding, cheesecake with caramel topping, triple chocolate cake and a large selection of ice cream sandwiches. We opted for the local fare and picked the bread pudding. OM MY GOD – it was so decadent.
We truly enjoyed our meal and can’t believe it took us so long to visit. We will definitely return sooner rather than later.More
