The owner is super nice! He told us he will not have a brick and mortar store after this season BUT he will have a food truck and offer catering. The food is very fresh and definitely made as ordered. Brussel sprouts were yummy. Crab...cake sandwich was divine 😋 $$More

We have eaten at Denson's several times over the past several years and the food never disappoints. The sandwiches are unique and fresh. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is due to the ordering process (inside dining still closed due to COVID)....You have to look up menu on line and then either email or phone in your order. They warn you about the difficulty getting through on the phone so we emailed. The food was excellent but what I ordered didn't travel well (calamari with thai chili sauce)...chili sauce leaked through the cardboard container. Will definitely continue to eat there but will wait for the inside dining to open back up.More

We rave about Denson's food - got it to take out and eat at Colonial Beach Brewing next door. Everything we ordered was tasty: delicious pork cutlet sandwich (very big portion of meat), great fries, and fried oyster po' boy sandwich.

Denson’s was recommended to us last summer. It’s a small place so you definitely need a reservation. We were thoroughly impressed. I had some dietary restrictions and they accommodated every one and the meal was still outstanding. I wish I could have had a dessert....They treated us like long lost friends when we told them we hadn’t been there before. They only use fresh products, therefore, no crab cakes in February. Definitely will go back in the summer.More

This was a delightful surprise. We came for oysters and were not disappointed. We shared Oysters Cackalacky, Oysters Denson, and fried oysters. Cackalacky is so named because of the North Carolina sauce used. For my entree, I had scallops in mango reduction sauce with crispy...brussel sprouts. Incredible. The owners are very hands on and attentive. Note for next time: I saw desserts being served to other customers, including an eclair that appeared to be the size of a small dog. Presumably those at the table were sharing.More

From the minute you walk in you feel at home. Couldn’t ask for better service there a tru team. Very limited seating inside but totally cozy. On to the food, solid menu , great imaginative specials. Priced well, all fresh made to order. Bar none...the best find I’ve had in a long time. My only regret, I don’t live closer. BravoMore

My husband and I stayed close to home for our 33-year wedding anniversary and decided to have our celebration dinner at Denson’s in Colonial Beach, Va. Our reservation (definitely need reservations) was for 6:30pm. We arrived ahead of time but only had to wait a...short while before we were seated. Immediately upon entry to the store/restaurant the aroma hit me. It smelled so good. We were greeted by the owner/chef – Rocky Denson and his wife, Blaire. They were very welcoming. I was happy we had a few minutes before sitting down so we had a chance to look at the food and beverage items available in the grocery part of the business. They offer a selection of local and non-local wine and beer as well as cheeses, meats and pre-made offerings that are grab and go items. We were seated at one of the 5 tables available in the enclosed porch. During the warmer months they have an outside area that seats roughly the same number of people as inside. We started off with our beverage order. My husband ordered the Blue Mountain Brewery Kolsch they have on tap and I ordered a glass of Man (South Africa) Chardonnay. We’ve both had the Kolsch before when we visited Blue Mountain Brewery but this was my first taste of this wine, it was very good. Blaire explained the oyster options available. They offer a bubble and brine flight along with 3 cooked options Denson’s Style Order, Oysters Rockefeller and Cackalacky style. We ordered a combination of Denson’s style and Rockefeller style, 3 each. Both were good but the Denson’s style (butter, garlic and parmesan cheese) were our favorite. Next, we each ordered a soup course. My husband ordered Oyster soup and I ordered the Lobster bisque. What can I say – they were both DELICIOUS. For dinner, my husband ordered the 14oz Delmonico steak with green beans and mashed potatoes. He ordered the steak rare and it was cooked to perfection. Rocky came out to ask if the steak was cooked like he wanted. I ordered Rockfish – grilled with crispy Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. The fish was cooked to perfection – very light and flakey with just the right amount of seasoning. The Brussel sprouts were to die for – I loved them. The green beans were very simply prepared and delicious and the mashed potatoes were creamy goodness. Neither of us could finish our dinners so we boxed them up for home. Blaire offered us a free dessert to celebrate our anniversary. She explained the desserts available – bread pudding, cheesecake with caramel topping, triple chocolate cake and a large selection of ice cream sandwiches. We opted for the local fare and picked the bread pudding. OM MY GOD – it was so decadent. We truly enjoyed our meal and can’t believe it took us so long to visit. We will definitely return sooner rather than later.More

My parents came and had lunch and said it was ok, the prices were good. They shared a Pimento cheese sandwich and a chicken salad sandwich. They thought gorge chicken salad sandwich was super great but the Pimento Cheese sandwich was below par. The atmosphere...was very casual. stated they would go back and try something else the next time they came to town.More

At first glance, you may think that this is a small town specialty grocer. When you enter, you will appear be in a “to go” looking tiny specialty food/wine shop. Don’t be fooled! You’ll be promptly greeted and once you say you’d like to eat...in you’ll be seated in the side located restaurant. There are only a handful of tables, but make sure you get one. The food will be worth the wait. We ordered the Crab BLT, Fried Green Tomatoes and Lump Crab, and kid’s Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Our meals came with potato chips so if you want fries, you’ll have to order them separately. Everything was delicious. We peeked at the other food brought in for the patrons who had already ordered and everything was ample and delicious looking! The owner came out to each and every table and warmly greeted us and also bid us a farewell as we left. It added a nice touch. We will definitely return here. Their summer hours are Thursday-Saturday 11-2 for lunch and 5-8p for dinner. The menu changes often but I’m sure everything would be delicious!More

We haven't been inside the grocery/restaurant, but both times that we've been to Colonial Beach we've loved the ice cream that Denson's serves out their window. Reasonably priced, good quality real ice cream (not soft serve).

We went for a drive this last beautiful Thursday and decided to have a late lunch here. We arrived at 1:30 pm as many diners were leaving, so our timing was perfect. They stop serving lunch at 2 pm. We had our choice of inside...or outside and chose inside and we were seated within 5 minutes. There was about 4-5 small tables as well as bar stool seating for 8 or so on the enclosed porch. We ordered a cup of oyster stew, Crab Cake Sandwich with fries and a Crab Melt with chips. The oyster stew was Ok. There were 5 oysters which were tender and sweet. The milk broth could have used more spices for my liking, as I thought mine was lacking flavor. My Crab Cake was large, tasty with very little filler and I enjoyed very much. The hand cut fries with homemade ketchup was good. My fries were not overly salty. My wife thought the Crab melt was ok. We topped off our meal with the bread pudding which was very delicious. This is a fun, casual dining experience with a friendly staff that provided impeccable service. This appears to be a favorite spot with the locals as everyone seemed to know each other. The owner stopped by a few times to say hello and inquire about our food. The food is fresh and prepared when ordered, so the entrees take some time to arrive. I suggest you enjoy a couple appetizers while you wait. They have many to choose from on the menu. We recommend this place and we will be back.More

We decided to dine in for lunch and had to wait about 20 minutes as it’s a small place. The food was great! Best crab cakes we’ve had and the kids liked their grilled cheese. Get the homemade fries - they are great, too!
