My wife and I have been to Shebeen on a number of occasions and have always been very satisfied with the food and atmosphere. On our most recent visit we were made to stand for about 20 minutes before being seated, despite having reservations. The hostess was very apologetic, our server was great and despite the minor set back we... More

Living in Charlottesville, we have visited The Shebeen several times, most recently last night. We have always enjoyed their food, with some appetizer highlights (baked brie is AMAZING, calamari and samosas good as well) and great entrees (salmon, ribeye and lamb shank were raved about). We have also enjoyed great brunch meals as well. Wine, beer and cocktails selections were... More

The food at Shabeen is indeed different. If you are looking for dishes with unusual names and spicy flavors, you should try this restaurant. Been there several times, and have found that during the week is the better time to go. Weekends you will find a wait, sometimes a long one, and the bar for a place to wait is... More

The restaurant is directly behind the Omni. Specializes in South African food, a lot of grilled meats and curry-type flavors. Good selection for vegetarians as well. Try the lamb or the durban chicken.

I have bragged about my favorite place to so many friends and family. What a disappointment tonight to have such wonderful food and company and such a poor waitress. We had to ask for bread and for drink refills. Finally, my brother-in-law went to the bar for service. Another waiter and employee helped us while we were left without a... More

Food was great: tasty, flavorful, plenty of options. What was even better was the service; the manager worked hard to get our group of 17 a table with only a few hours notice and a last minute time change. Wonderful experience.

Three colleagues dined at the Shebeen- a South African based cuisine. At first skeptical as I had never dined in that type establishment before. I was delighted with the service, the wines and entrees! Prices were reasonable as well. We tried one another's meals and all were prepared beautifully. I look forward to visiting The Shebeen on my next visit... More

Shebeen is one of the few South African restaurants in the country, and you might be tempted to stop in to see what it's about. It's behind a rather typical big chain store, but there's plenty of parking and the folks there have tried their best to strike up an African vibe. The food is good, and again there seems... More

We definitely want the country to start eating more South African food. It's so delicious and comforting, yet bold and adventurous as well. Thank you for your support -- we hope to see you again soon. Best, Walter, Owner More

A delightful interior, with an interesting blend of Irish pub and African motifs (mostly) covering an office park skeleton (acoustic tiles still visible above the rough-hewn beams). Service relatively prompt and friendly, and most of the food outstanding. Fish and chips a bit disappointing, and peri peri not up to South African standards, but the ground nut stew was fantastic.... More

Glad you're a fan of the place, Austin. Although we're disappointed our fish and chips/peri peri weren't quite up to your standards, we definitely appreciate your compliments on the rest of our menu and look forward to making your next visit even better. Thanks, Walter, Owner More

My husband and I went to the Shebeen and were not disappointed! We ordered the Durban Spiced Chicken and were blown away! It is served on a skewer of sugar cane over amazing, flavorful grits and a delightful sauce that reminded of me of Indian flavor profiles. My husband begged to go back the next day, but we decided to... More
